Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware, as well as the most populous city in the state. As of 2019, the city was estimated to have 70166 people and is considered a part of the Delaware Valley metropolitan area, which has several cities included and a population of seven million. The city was initially settled by Swedish explorers and was the first Swedish settlement in the United States.

Wilmington Trivia:

As Wilmington was settled during the early 1640s, it has a complicated history. The area was passed through many hands throughout history, which gives it a diverse background of different cultural influences. Some facts about the city's settlement include:

  • the Wilmington area was originally settled by the Lenape people
  • The Swedish purchased the territory in the early 1640s
  • the Dutch took the city from the Swedish in the early 1650s
  • the British, after a series of wars with the Dutch, managed to win control over the area after 1654 and kept a stable hold of it until the American War of Independence

Wilmington Attractions:

Wth a city with such a rich history has many historical locations to see and explore. Many locals would suggest the following places to tour:

  • Old New Castle: this colonial town is one of the best-preserved in the US. If you enjoy colonial architecture and history, Old New Castle is an ideal place to see.
  • The Read House: this 20-room mansion was originally built between 1801-1803 for George Read II. It is a Federalist-styled home and has been preserved to show what life was like for the lawyer, his family, and his servants.
  • The Longwood Gardens: these botanical gardens are loved throughout Delaware and by the entire US, and they have a unique history attached to them. Originally, the land was going to be sold for timber, but Pierre du Pont purchased it instead, which led to the formation of the gardens.

If historical buildings and venues are not something you find interest in, Wilmington also has fantastic restaurants, scenery, and shopping areas.

Why Flood Damage in Wilmington Smells Terrible.

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

flood damaged laundry room. Flood damage odors are no DIY project. SERVPRO technicians are IICRC certified for any size job. They are trained and experienced in restoration jobs.

Mitigation, cleanup, and deodorization – what your flooded Wilmington home needs.

Flooding is a dreaded occurrence that can happen any time of the year in Wilmington. The flood itself can sweep cars off roadways, destroy young plants in green areas, and destroy the interiors of homes. The destructive after-effects continue, making a fast recovery imperative.

While the disarray seen varies throughout your Wilmington neighborhood, flood damage smells terrible wherever it goes. SERVPRO can get rid of this odor while removing the physical debris throughout your residence. To do this, we rely on specific chemical agents and application methods, including:

  • Power-washing the interior to remove smaller debris particles and the bulk of pathogens,
  • Spray application of biocides like Sporicidin or Benefect to regain control over microbial populations,
  • Use deodorizing materials (gel-packs, activated charcoal pellets), and
  • Use air movers to push foul-smelling air outside.

Many odors come from materials we remove and dispose of outside after flood damage happens, so a large percentage of odor-creating materials get pulled out. What remains can still cause problems when temperatures increase, so we encourage our customers to call us if odors reappear during the Spring and Summer.

Call the technicians at SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 for all of your house’s flood damage mitigation requirements.

False Positives in Water Damage Restoration Projects in Hockessin.

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO vehicle with equipment outside job site. Water damage restoration should be left to the professionals. SERVPRO techs are trained and experienced in the service you need.

How we find water damage for our Hockessin Customers.

Water damage can hide within a house’s physical structure. Just because it remains unseen does not mean that homeowners should ignore it. SERVPRO needs to locate all affected materials for effective mitigation and comprehensive restoration. Sometimes, infrared cameras are used to give us false positives.

What can cause false positives?

When a house in Hockessin requires water damage restoration, we need accurate information to save our customers time and money. Here are four ways false positives happen and what SERVPRO does to correct them:

  • Exposure or lack of sun – lack of insulation inside the exterior wall can cause such readings,
  • Wiring in the walls – heavy use can show a supposedly dry area when moisture is actually present,
  • Air currents in-residence – knowledge about how air moves through the home can eliminate such false positives, and the
  • HVAC system, including leaks in the ducts – inspection of dubious areas can rule out false positives.

To confirm readings showing moisture in walls and ceilings, we also use a moisture meter to test for the presence of water. This can determine how much excess moisture exists, which also helps determine how long a desiccant machine needs to run.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere has qualified technicians in electrical and HVAC who work with our water damage restoration team, ensuring we provide the services you need at the lowest cost to you. Call (302) 992-0104 so we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Firefighters Want to Protect Families and Businesses in Wilmington.

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

Inside of a SERVPRO trailer with equipment. Fire restoration is no easy task. Call SERVPRO and their IICRC certified technicians for the job you need. Anytime 24/7 365 days a year.

It is also why SERVPRO's fire damage crew keeps training.

Firefighters like the ones we have here in Wilmington are a dedicated bunch. A fire in the middle of the night can leave a family feeling as bad as their residence looks. Our specialists are also committed to making a bad situation better.

In Wilmington, our firefighters are an important part of our community, even when they are not responding to an alarm. As fire science increases and new developments in other areas let fire departments in our area increase their ability to serve us. This often requires procuring new equipment.

Fire departments used to rely on very basic equipment.

One of the latest firehouses to close, Fire House #5 on Gilpin Avenue, used to be called the Water Witch Fire Company. In the late 1800s, water pump trucks only cost a couple of thousand dollars.

Without the equipment used today, a house fire could become much more severe and result in extreme fire damage:

  • More extensive property loss happening during a fire. Equipment provided to firefighters did not allow them to safely and easily enter houses or businesses,
  • Increased injuries sustained by firefighters, compared to those suffered today.

Accidents still happen to these heroic individuals, but their protective sense of duty pushes them to do as much as possible to reduce the damage caused during a fire.

What is it like inside a firehouse?

Firefighters do not work regular eight-hour shifts like seen in most types of work. They are much longer. Because of the extended shifts firefighters keep, they also sleep at the firehouse. They eat their meals there. They also spend time watching television, playing games, and reading. It is like a home away from home, and it looks like it, too. There is a living room, a kitchen, a dining room, bedrooms, and a laundry area. But the garage is much bigger in a firehouse because fire trucks need protection from the rain. This is partly because of the equipment and tools used during firefighting.

SERVPRO's improved equipment increases our fire damage mitigation abilities.

We know that continuous training ensures that we learn the latest techniques and developments, much like Wilmington's firefighters keep up-to-date. We also use mock buildings that give a hands-on perspective in many areas that affect fire-damaged homes.

The severely traumatizing situation caused by a fire also

  • often endangers family members in their very own home, but we can make it safe again,
  • destroys personal possessions and heirlooms alike, but SERVPRO's technicians can restore these priceless items or know a professional restoration expert who can, and
  • is only the beginning of a rocky situation, which our seasoned guidance can help become more manageable.

We want to make a bad situation bearable for our customers, which is why SERVPRO answers all calls immediately, just like the fire department. It could be someone calling about an emergency. Delaying often results in tremendous and unnecessary additional problems.

Why is Mold a Threat to My Home?

2/16/2021 (Permalink)

lab with a servpro bandana They say I can sniff out mold in a Hockessin home--and then remediate the damage

Is There a Problem Other Than Making My Hockessin Home Look Bad?

Active mold spores can quickly spread in attics and behind walls. Given enough time and water, mold colonies can grow through an entire home.

So why SERVPRO for mold removal in Hockessin? Rapid remediation is the best method to stop the threat and reduce damage. Our teams can quickly remove visible mold with chemical cleaners, and dry sponges or cloths.

What If the Mold Penetrated Wall or Roof Supports?

When the mold has time to dig into wall framing or other support assemblies, our specialists have several options to remove it without compromising a home’s structural integrity, it at all possible.

  • Hand-Sanding – Team members use sandpaper to attack small spots of mold that just penetrated the surface.
  • Power-Sanding – Specialists use power sanders to remove multiple layers of wood so they can vacuum the spores and wood dust into sealed bags for disposal.
  • Soda-Blasting – SERVPRO technicians use this device when hyphae deeply penetrated support structures. The soda does little damage and allows us to preserve even the most affected wood to reduce costs.
  • Applying an antimicrobial product to the treated area

For efficient mold remediation, call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere today at (302) 992-0104.

Does a Fire Mean Replace All Damaged Property?

2/9/2021 (Permalink)

Can a Wilmington Residence Be Restored After Severe Damage?

Thanks to smoke alarms, most home fires are put out quickly with minimal damage. With some fast-burning fires, however, there is often an excessive amount of damage before the fire department can extinguish them.

Wilmington fire damage response needs to be as quick as the fire itself. Upon arrival, SERVPRO technicians perform a fast inspection to determine what can be cleaned or repaired, and what must be removed immediately for disposal.

Eliminating Threats to Area Homes

After stopping a fire, soot and burned property can still cause damage:

  • Soot, if left on surfaces, can pit and otherwise scar surfaces. Technicians use an extensive inventory of cleaning agents that not only eliminate the physical threat but also remove the odors that these particles generate which can spread through the home farther than the fire itself.
  • Burned items like carpets and furniture also generate odors and can be especially pungent. Team members immediately remove them and set up fans to circulate the air to clear lingering odors.

To begin fire damage restoration, contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 today.

Do Water and Water Incidents Shape Wilmington?

When You Need to Choose from Water Restoration Companies, Select SERVPRO

Water and the topography around Wilmington have shaped the development of our city since the very beginning. Our city rests directly on the fall line which divides the hilly areas of the west from the coastal plains in the east.

From the Marshlands to Market Street

Market Street is a perfect example of it. To the east of it are the low lying marshy areas that line both sides of the Christina River. On the west side, the land quickly rises to a high point and designates the watershed of the Christina and Brandywine Rivers. This line runs west and parallels Delaware Avenue from 10th and Market. This higher area is healthier than the coastal plain and marshes, so it was much more attractive when the first residents began building Quaker Hill in the mid-1700s.

Early Days – Foundation and Development

Four different countries established colonies on what is now Wilmington.

  • Sweden and Finland – Their agent, Thomas Willing was the developer who planned the first colony in 1638 and named it Willington after himself.
  • The Netherlands – The Dutch took control of the area in 1655 but made no significant improvements before handing everything over to the British
  • United Kingdom – After languishing for a time, George II granted the struggling colony a borough charter in 1739. This changed the name to Wilmington for Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington, and helped to increase commerce and growth.

Development, Growth … and More Growth

Wilmington continued to prosper before and after the War of Independence. No major battles were fought here, so there was no accompanying despoiling of the area either. Farming and shipping greatly expanded to serve the new country. In 1837, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad set up shop which introduced new industries to Wilmington and helped quickly bring in new workers and their families. This included shipbuilding and by 1868, Wilmington was the largest builder of warships in the U.S.

Modern Times and Modern Industries

Today, Wilmington does not lead in shipbuilding, but the city is still a hub for national and international commerce. Throughout the 1980s, the state passed laws friendly to bringing in financial agencies and set-up their corporate headquarters. Our city is now known as the home of such institutions like Bank of America, Barclays, Capital One, and Chase Bank.

Water Restoration Requirements Today

Water still directs our actions, regardless if it is storm run-off or the failure of a sprinkler system that sends hundreds of gallons throughout a business closed for the weekend. SERVPRO specialists have access to an extensive inventory of cleaners and equipment to quickly handle these issues:

  • Remove standing water inside the home
  • Dry carpets and draw water out of wood floors
  • Eliminate the musty odors water generates
  • Draw water out of building material such as wall and ceiling panels
  • Replace damaged items like floor trim

When you need water restoration, call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere today at (302) 992-0104. We are here for you.

Enjoy Many Indoor and Outdoor Activities in Wilmington

The first Swedish settlements in North America, Kristinehamn, Timmerön / Timber Island Sidoland (South Wellington), Strandviken, and Översidolandet, are now encompassed by the city of Wilmington. Settlers arrived initially in 1638 and built Fort Christina. Initially, under Swedish rule, the Dutch captured the fort in 1655, later to be overtaken by the British in 1664. In 1739, the name was again changed from Willington to Wilmington to commemorate the Earl of Wilmington.

Wilmington provided ships, railroad cars, shoes, and many other war-related goods during the civil war. One of the significant supplies included gunpowder, manufactured at a plant on the Brandywine River by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, who later became a powerful industrialist. The city benefitted from the civil war and later both world wars with shipyards, machinery, and chemical producers. Many other products were also produced, creating a massive demand for workers and driving growth in the region. Currently, the city has evolved to focus on international and national banks and credit card operations as the primary employment source. Wilmington is also close to Philadelphia, which provides many job opportunities and entertainment venues for residents.

Local Venues to Visit in Wilmington and Surrounding Area

Whether you enjoy outdoor activities, visiting homes or museums with a long history in the past, or enjoying local restaurants and sports, there is something for everyone. The city has designated nine areas as historic districts and one as a conservation district. The following is a list of exciting places that locals and tourists enjoy:

The estate house was constructed with all of the latest modern technology available and a number of his inventions. This home was one of the grandest homes in the area. DuPont added extensive gardens, including a large reflecting pool and several scenic paths connecting various property areas.

Visitors can explore the home and the grounds following self-guided tours. They can also join regularly scheduled tours to learn intimate details about the DuPont family's life and times. Call ahead for scheduled tours and visiting hours.

The walkway extends for 1.3 miles, with many sitting areas to enjoy the natural beauty of the trees, shrubs, and grasses along the Christina River. There are also numerous restaurants offering fresh seafood, delicious meals, all with a great view of the boardwalk and the river.

Delaware Children's Museum

The museum's excellent family attractions encourage imaginative minds to learn through play and experience math, science, and technology. There are a variety of exhibits for various age groups, including:

Locals enjoy the autumn colors, sledding in the winter, bird watching, and relaxing walks along the many trails.

SERVPRO Provides Specialized Services to Match the Loss after Large or Small Fires in Wilmington

Wilmington is a city with a rich history stretching as far back as the 1600s when a Swedish Warship, Kalmar Nyckel, landed on a natural wharf on the Christina River. At the time, the river was known as Minquas Kill. The location where Wilmington stands today was known as Fort Christina and was the center of the New Sweden colony established by the settlers. The purpose of the colony was to produce furs and Tobacco to avoid reliance on English and French merchants.

Wilmington's Swedish origins have had a significant impact on the American way of life, even beyond the former colony's confines. For instance, the log cabin type of house was an idea from Sweden, which later became a popular style for first homes in the frontier areas.  In later years, log cabins are great for vacation homes or other luxurious purposes. The New Sweden colony also brought some of the earliest Lutheran believers to America.

The city has advanced in many ways since its establishment in 1832. For instance, the Du Pont Company, which is an industry leader in the production of chemical and healthcare products all over the world, started in the area when one of the sons of Pierre Samuel du Pont, an immigrant from France, set up a gunpowder mill on the banks of Brandywine Creek. The Du Pont Company later diversified to other sectors.  Apart from being a big company within the city, Du Pont is also famous for developing unique compounds such as Teflon, Nylon, and Kevlar, which have widespread uses. The city is also renowned as the Corporate Capital of the World because over half of fortune 500 companies have operations here.

A Diverse Dining Culture

Away from scientific developments and corporate business, there is a lighter side to Wilmington, especially when you consider its diverse culinary scene. For instance, there are several raw bar and crab shacks in the city. Specialty restaurants that serve foods from different regions have also thrived in the area. Some of the unique cuisine you might enjoy in those establishments include scrapple, which is made from pork, spices, and buckwheat flour or cider doughnuts, among others. Some of the facilities people can explore to enjoy the unique cuisine include:

  • Banks' Seafood Kitchen and Raw Bar, located on the south Market Street, serves an assortment of fresh seafood. Most visitors rate it highly for serving tasty crab soup, crab cakes, and crabs.
  • Mikimotos, located on Washington Street, specializes in Pan Asian dishes. Visitors rate it highly for its quality Sushi. Another unique offering is the "Hairy Mexican," which is made from fried shrimp and rice. It also has crabmeat wrapped around it then dipped in eel sauce.
  • La Fia Bistro, located on North Market Street, takes a different approach by having an ever-changing menu. They also use locally sourced materials to prepare their dishes.
  • The Melting Pot located on Concord Pike Street offers heated pots of chocolate, cheese, or broth for dipping. It is popular with people because of the wide variety of foods available and the friendly atmosphere, allowing diners personal space to enjoy their meals.

Historic Sites in Wilmington

The long development journey of the city has left many fascinating buildings and other constructions that tell the stories of the city from different eras. They are also great places to spend time while exploring the area. The most notable ones include:

  • The Old Swedes Historic Site boasts of being the oldest standing church whose structure or foundation has never been altered. The construction is unique, starting with rock walls followed by brick additions. It also features hardwood pews and exquisite stained glass windows. The church hosts the Swedish tradition of Lucia once a year, which is celebrated in a candlelit ceremony.
  • Rodney Square is an outdoor area where people sit and enjoy the outdoors. It features the statue of Caesar Rodney, the great American revolutionary. He famously rode 70 miles through a storm on the night of July 1, 1776, to break a voting deadlock that allowed Delaware to join 11 other states in favor of the resolution of independence.
  • The Rockford Tower, which was constructed during the industrial revolution, provides a unique glimpse into the past. For instance, on its side, there is a sundial. The area surrounding the tower is great for hiking, skating, bicycling, or jogging since there are a beautiful park and surrounding hills dotted with caves and huge boulders.

How Does SERVPRO Help Wilmington Business Owners Tackle Fire Damage?

Disasters such as fire can interrupt business activities or reduce a vital structure to ruins in a few hours. Wilmington business operators need viable solutions that can help salvage their operations in the aftermath of fire incidents. SERVPRO provides different services, including cleaning and safeguarding the premises, thus helping the business overcome the effects of large or small fires.

The combustion processes produce various types of residues, which are broadly classified as soot and ash. The residues settle on all surfaces, thus affecting structural materials and contents. It is possible to save some of the items by cleaning them. SERVPRO helps by using regular cleaning or specialized approaches such as ultrasonic cleaning to restore the items affected by fire residues.

Fires may also leave business premises unsecured. For instance, they might create openings when windows shatter or roofs cave-in.  The openings expose the contents held within the premises to weather elements or other risks. SERVPRO technicians help secure the premises, thus saving any salvageable items from further deterioration.

  • Installing roof tarps in case there is a roof cave in to keep out rain, snow, or other weather elements
  • Boarding up walls to seal any opening created by the fire or firefighting efforts
  • Creating barriers inside the building to seal off certain areas, thus shielding items held within from moisture or airborne debris
  • Performing move-outs that relocate vulnerable items to another section of the property or an offsite storage facility.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is an established restoration service that helps lighten the load when Wilmington businesses are affected by fire damage. Call (302) 992-0104 to get the speedy response necessary to counter the effects of a fire loss.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere Preserves Water-Damaged Wilmington Properties

Wilmington is the most populous city in the Blue Hen State, sporting over 70,000 residents as of 2019 census data. The land was originally home to Lenape tribespeople, who referred to the land as “Pakehakink” or “Paxahakink,” before being settled in the 17th century primarily by European settlers from the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.

The Corporate Capital of the World is most well known for its contributions to chemical and weapons development and the home of the French Huguenot du Pont family, who would later found the DuPont corporation. Manufacturing in Wilmington focused on gunpowder, iron, leather, and transportation. By the mid-19th century, Wilmington was a prolific producer of carriages and iron ships.

In the first half of the 20th century, Wilmington was well-equipped to handle the production needs of the First and Second World Wars. Factories produced everything from cars and machinery to clothes and leather goods.

After World War II, Wilmington thrived due to the booming postwar economy and the significant improvements to infrastructure during the development of the interstate system. This economic upturn allowed the city’s size to increase dramatically and focus on building more residential districts.

The city is currently packed to the brim with cultural sites, art galleries, and other contributions to the arts and culture. Famed attractions in Wilmington include:

  • Brandywine Creek
  • The Delaware Art Museum
  • The DuPont Building
  • The Hagley Museum and Library
  • The Grand Opera House

A Brief History of Wilmington’s DuPont Company

Wilmington is home to the Du Pont family’s first estate in the Americas. The family remains one of the most wealthy in the United States. Their history in the United States started in 1800 when Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours migrated with his two sons to Delaware. Once there, one of the sons, Éleuthère Irénée, founded a gunpowder manufacturing plant near the Brandywine River.

Its modest beginnings took advantage of the abundance of natural resources available for manufacture. Eventually, they became the world’s largest black powder producer. An estimated 10 percent of Delaware’s population is purported to have been employed by the Du Pont family at the zenith of their various business ventures.

Several Wilmington locales are named for the Du Ponts and their associated businesses, especially along Delaware Route 141. These include:

  • Hotel du Pont
  • DuPont Chestnut Run Plaza
  • St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine Catholic Church
  • Nemours Mansion and Gardens
  • Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children
  • DuPont Country Club

Today, the Du Ponts are more well-known globally for their associations with business, politics, and philanthropy, with a total estimated value in the billions. In Wilmington, the first estate founded by the family that housed the gunpowder plant, anglicized as Eleutheran Mills, remains to this day.

Wilmington, the Corporate Capital

Wilmington, and the state of Delaware as a whole, are referred to as the “Corporate Capital” of both America and the world. Several factors contribute to this particular moniker. For one, more than 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies are incorporated in Delaware. On top of that, over 75 percent of initial public offerings are conducted by businesses incorporated in Delaware.

So many companies choose to incorporate in Delaware that an estimated 25 percent of the state’s revenue comes specifically from incorporation. In Wilmington alone, over 300,000 businesses are registered at the CT Corporation on North Orange Street.

Highly competitive corporate tax rates, combined with the Court of Chancery ruling on corporate cases without juries, allow commercial entities to take care of legal matters quickly. Bipartisan efforts in government at the local, state, and federal levels have allowed for the proliferation of Delaware’s generous incorporation regulations over the years.

While other states, like Nevada and Wyoming, strive to implement similar practices in tandem with a lack of state corporate tax rates, Delaware’s Court of Chancery offers a wealth of influential legal precedents and high-profile cases that make it a preferable option for commercial entities.

The Court of Chancery differs from a typical court. The lawyers and judges appointed for cases specialize specifically in corporate law. This constitutional court exists separately from the state’s Supreme and Superior Courts to allow for more expedient handling of corporate claims, as well as civil and criminal matters.

What Does SERVPRO’s Structural Drying for a Wilmington Home Entail?

Structural drying is an essential part of water removal for Wilmington homes. This process depends on multiple tasks performed by SERVPRO’s Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) accredited technicians to succeed. These include the following:

  • Careful measurement of moisture levels in such surfaces as wood, drywall, carpeting, and upholstery
  • Moisture extraction with wands, pumps, mops, wet/dry vacuums, and other industrial-grade water removal tools
  • Use of EPA-registered biocides to remove odors and microbial growth
  • Calculation and placement of air movers and dehumidifiers to ensure safe drying without secondary damages

Proper placement of centrifugal air movers is crucial for ensuring that dehumidifiers can catch and isolate humid air to replace it with warm, dry air that successfully restores water damage in your home. Depending on the scale of the damage and the area in your home where the disaster occurred, SERVPRO techs can also erect polyethylene drying chambers to accelerate the process.

Various models of air movers are used for different applications during drying. Air movers with multiple speed settings, for example, are favored for drying tented carpet both on the surface and underneath. Technicians typically place air movers along walls every 10 to 16 linear feet at 45-degree angles perpendicularly to the wall to pull moisture off of them. These devices can also be positioned to dry inside of flooring, walls, and ceiling cavities.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere can ensure that your home looks “Like it never even happened.” Call (302) 992-0104 for a full suite of restoration services that can return your property to a clean and safe condition.

Are Dehumidifiers an Effective Piece of Equipment After a Flood?

10/15/2020 (Permalink)

Wet carpet Call SERVPRO after your Wilmington flood.

SERVPRO Technicians in Wilmington Use Dehumidifiers to Remove Excess Moisture from the Air

Dehumidifiers are a piece of critical equipment following a flood in Wilmington. Flooding by nature means that water is abundant in your home. After the flood water recedes and technicians extract excess water from your home, dehumidifiers, in conjunction with air movers, speed up the drying process.

Why is it Important to Calculate Grain Depression? Technicians Use Grains to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Dehumidifiers

Our professional team dealing with flood damage in Wilmington uses the grain measurement to determine a dehumidifier's effectiveness. To do this, technicians use a thermo-hygrometer to measure the difference between the air exhausted from the dehumidifier and the intake air. This difference is called grain depression. When the grain depression is not a big difference, it means that the dehumidifier in question is no longer sufficient.

What are the Steps to Measure Grain Depression?

  • Use the thermo-hygrometer to measure both the relative humidity (RH) and the air temperature coming out of the dehumidifier's exhaust.
  • Use the thermo-hygrometer to measure the temperature and RH of the air in the impacted area. This reading represents the intake air since it is from the impacted area of your home.
  • Use a psychrometric wheel or chart to determine the impacted room's gpp (grains per pound).
  • Subtract the exhaust number from the intake number to determine the grain depression.
  • Monitor and reset dehumidifiers and air movers to optimize drying capacity

The grain depression measurement is helpful when determining the usefulness of a specific piece of dehumidifying equipment. However, it is crucial to also measure the relative humidity and temperature in the room to facilitate an effective drying process best. Is it Possible to Save Paintings During Mold Remediation in an Art Studio?

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Art studio Mold damage in your art studio? SERVPRO can make it "Like it never even happened."

Wilmington Artists Concerned About Art Materials During Mold Remediation.

Wilmington art studio owners know how much time and effort it takes to put together an art studio or gallery. It is a true labor of love and an excellent way to showcase local artists.

No studio owner wants to deal with mold remediation in their Wilmington gallery. Mold can be disastrous for art materials. However, do not despair. Mold remediation is possible in many cases, and SERVPRO is on hand to help.

When should gallery owners contact SERVPRO?

We recommend you contact us as soon as you notice signs of mold. You do not have to see fungal growth – if you notice damp patches on walls, ceilings, or artworks, let us know. Likewise, if you smell a moldy scent, call us. The sooner we arrive, the better the chance of saving your materials. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster, so do not delay.

What does mold do to paintings and art materials?

Unfortunately, canvas and other art materials such as paper or natural brushes make excellent food for mold. The fungus is parasitic and grows by digesting organic materials. Once mold settles on art materials, it can:

  • Cause unsightly black or green patches
  • Damage materials beyond repair
  • Spread throughout your gallery and find new places to propagate

Can paintings be restored after fungal growth?

Restoring paintings requires specialist knowledge and equipment, but it is certainly possible. The tricky part about restoring moldy paintings is that you must try to avoid using chemicals on the painted service. The type of painting makes a difference. It is tough to restore watercolors as any water-based products will cause them to run. Acrylics are a little more robust, and oil paintings are the hardiest of all.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere can restore some mold-damaged paintings, especially if the damage is minimal. However, in some cases, you may need to contact professional art restorers, who can:

  • Choose products designed for use on the artwork, which minimize the risk of damage
  • Repaint areas of the picture
  • Restore the canvas, board, and stretchers that support the painting

Our technicians will let you know how much we can do and what results we can get to decide on your next best course of action.

Is it possible to rescue blank canvases?

Yes, depending on the extent of fungal growth. Our technicians can use careful brushing and powerful HEPA vacuums to remove mold from the canvas's surface. We can also use antimicrobial treatments and cleaning products and dry the canvas afterward.

We understand the importance of restoring canvas to its original shape and texture. We will give you an honest assessment of each piece's condition and the likelihood of a favorable outcome.

What about paint and paintbrushes?

Paint stored in properly-closed tins can last for ten years or more, and the container should keep the mold out. However, if you see mold on the paint's surface or the paint smells musty, discard and replace it.

We can treat paintbrushes with a combination of scrubbing and brushing the handles, and using detergent and antimicrobial agents to clean the bristles. We can also tackle other wooden objects such as:

  • Canvas stretchers
  • Backing boards
  • Frames

Can SERVPRO clean the gallery space too?

Yes. When our team arrives at your studio, they will assess the space and contents and draw up a plan of action. The assessment includes testing for moisture and humidity, so we know what we are working with.

We will set up containment around the affected area to contain the mold and prevent spores from breaking off and traveling throughout your studio. We use scrubbing, HEPA vacuuming, dry and wet wiping, and sometimes baking soda blasting to clean walls, floors, ceilings, and crawl spaces. We also place air movers and dehumidifiers to dry your gallery and make it less habitable for mold.

We deodorize everything before we leave to get rid of lingering mold smells. We can use air scrubbers and carbon filters, and we can also wet fog nooks and crannies and place odor-eating pellets around the building.

Will the mold come back?

Because mold is naturally-occurring, we cannot guarantee it will not return. However, you can take some steps to protect your art studio by keeping it dry and free of water leaks and drips. Consider investing in some dehumidifiers – choose a model that displays the humidity level as it dries. Keep your gallery building in good condition, and do not overlook leaks or wet patches.

If the mold does come back, do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can make it worse. Let us know, and we will assist you.

For help saving your art studio from mold, call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104.

A Fire Caused by a Cooking Appliance Left a Homeowner with Severe Fire Damage. Where Does a Homeowner in Wilmington Seek Help?

9/27/2020 (Permalink)

oven covered with smoke and soot A fire in your house can cause much more damage than you’d expect. Contact SERVPRO for fire damage remediation services to get life back to normal.

Talk to SERVPRO Technicians to Help You Deal With the Fire Damage in Your Wilmington Residence.

The secondary damages of a fire are not only traumatizing but also tricky to handle. Watching your belongings and building materials damaged or covered in soot can cause massive stress. Fortunately, SERVPRO professionals in Wilmington can mitigate the damage and get your property to its preloss state.

What can I clean myself?

It can be overwhelming to handle the fire damage in your Wilmington property without the right equipment, products, and expertise. Proper training, hi-tech equipment, and advanced cleaning products are essential in getting your property to its pre-damaged state. If you try to clean any surface by yourself, you can worsen the destruction.

However, before our technicians get to your property, you can set aside items that require urgent restoration. Valuable items such as TV's and computers can have priority over items like glassware. That way, you can make the fire mitigation work a bit easier for our restorers.

Can the type of fire affect the restoration process?

The cause of fire and items burned determines the type of residues that settle on various surfaces. This can affect the cleanup process significantly. For instance:

  • If protein-based substances such as beef or chicken were involved in the fire, the greasy film could spread in your kitchen. Also, the grease can burn various surfaces when heated further, and only powerful chemicals can remove it. We can use concentrated wood oil soap to clean your finished wood surfaces such as paneling, kitchen cabinets, and wood floors.
  • If natural substances such as wood, paper, among other organic materials, were involved in the fire, a gray or black residue could cover surfaces in your property. Our crew can rely on a powerful vacuum and approved products to clean the area.

Can restorers remove the smoke odor in my property?

Even after cleaning smoke residues, your property can still have a charcoal-like odor. Our SERVPRO technicians can use appropriate tools, products, and cutting-edge techniques to remove the odor from your property permanently. Some products we can use to remove the odors include:

  • Odor counteracting beads
  • Water-based wet mist deodorizers
  • Solvent-based thermal fog deodorizers

We can also use air scrubbers to combat the odors. The equipment draws indoor air through several filters to capture gases and odors and exhausts clean air into your property.

The primary and secondary damages of a fire can lead to costly home repairs. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 for proper restoration. "Like it never even happened."

READY How Do I Restore a Home after Flash Flooding?

9/8/2020 (Permalink)

Storms Can Lead to Flood Damage in your Wilmington Home; SERVPRO Provides Prompt, Safe Assistance for Residents in Need

Is reconstruction necessary after storm damages?

Adverse weather conditions in Wilmington can lead to flash flooding in the area. Rising water levels can back up sewers and overflow roads, which can affect your home. When water intrusion occurs as a result of flooding, it is considered as a contamination issue. Tainted water, often salty in this area, can complicate a water restoration project because many building materials can suffer permanent harm. According to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, grey or black water intrusion may require demolition to expose hidden moisture and discard ruined elements. The S500 recommends that "restorers should open assemblies" to remove contaminated materials from cavities. These assemblies could include floor-tiles, boards, baseboards, drywall, or other interior structures within the home. Opening assemblies can also help to provide an accurate assessment of subfloor and wall cavities.

How is contamination controlled in a flooded property?

A property with Flood Damage in Wilmington can continue to deteriorate after pumping standing water. Porous materials like insulation, drywall, and sheetrock can absorb contaminated water. Contaminated materials must be assessed for potential removal. In category two, water contamination- greywater- there is a good chance of cleaning wet materials. In grey water contamination, SERVPRO technicians can recover carpets or walls using chemical cleaners and pressure washing equipment. Blackwater requires removal and replacement. It is essential to have an expert assess water contamination. In some situations, pressure washing, for example, can worsen the condition of your home by converting contamination into aerosols.

How do restoration technicians return home to a sanitary state?

  • Remove obstructing assemblies through demolition to assess hidden materials
  • Clean and decontaminate salvageable materials like carpets, drywall, or upholsteries
  • Demolish and dispose of non-salvageable materials that have high-grade water contamination

Flash flooding can make your home unsafe. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 to secure your property.

How Does Soot Get Removed from Fire-Damaged Newport Homes?

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Soot covered walls after fire You can count on our professionals with state of the art equipment to quickly restore your property so you can return safely after a fire incident.

Soot is one of the most destructive effects of a fire loss, making it a priority to remove when restoration and mitigation get underway.

Fire losses that threaten Newport homes and businesses can damage the property in many ways. Among the most challenging to overcome is the presence of smoke residues and soot. Puff backs are a typical example of this threatening black residue throughout the house when an oil furnace has a small explosion in the ignition chamber. Soot can also occur through partial combustion of exposed materials and contents in your home. A thick residue can be a substantial burden for cleaning technicians and present hazardous conditions for the property, so our SERVPRO team works to remove this carcinogen wherever it gets found.

There are many layers and levels of fire damage in Newport homes that responding technicians like ours must address and overcome. While much of these concerns can get resolved during the mitigation phases with the application of advanced tools and technologies, soot can be a threat in multiple ways. From circulating particles to thick surface residues, there are varying strategies to resolve each of these types of soot and soiling damages to the structure and its contents.

How Does Airborne Soot Get Removed?

Circulating soot particles are microscopic, meaning that you might not always be able to identify their presence with the naked eye. Their small size is also hazardous in that breathing in these particulates can allow them to sit deeply into the lungs of those exposed, leading to respiratory conditions or worse. Removing these particles often requires several strategies that begin with addressing the present free-floating carcinogens and the residues on surfaces and contents throughout the structure. A combination of filtering and air purification tools can screen out particles as small as .03 microns with HEPA filtration screens. Tools and tactics for clearing the air often include:

  • Air Scrubber
  • Hydroxyl Generators
  • Air Duct Cleaning

What Steps Are Necessary for Soot Removal on Surfaces?

Soot and smoke residues often vary based on the material affected and the combusting materials. Protein residues, for example, get produced from grease fires in the kitchen. The incomplete combustion of fuels like wood produces thick smoke soiling that coats wall surfaces, ceilings, and floors throughout your house. There are multiple solutions to address these acidic residues, and they get selected based on the underlying materials impacted. We can pre-test potential cleaning strategies through small sample spaces to determine the most efficient approach for your specific construction materials, paints, wallpaper, and other involved products. These strategies for residue removal often include:

  • Soda Blasting – With pressurized air or even water combined with media like baking soda, this cleaning approach can dislodge and blow away thick soot residues on surfaces without damaging the underlying substrate.
  • Agitative Cleaning – Brushing, vacuuming, and feather dusting can be useful in removing dry smoke residues and a preliminary action to take with thicker soot residues before emulsification.
  • Chemical Solvents – Oil-based soils can benefit from the application of oil-based solvents. Testing the effectiveness of specific cleaning products can identify the type of residue and the best approaches for removing it.
  • Controlled Demolition – When all else fails, removing the impacted material entirely and later replacing it is the most direct restoration path.

How Do Damaged Contents Get Cleaned?

Your personal belongings can often also get highly damaged by circulating soot particles and residues forming on the surfaces of exposed items. Relocating these belongings to our nearby facility can allow for intricate cleaning and restoration actions to take place, such as:

  • Ultrasonic Tank – Hard materials like glass and ceramics coated with soot residues can benefit from time in the immersion tank. Millions of exploding microscopic bubbles loosen soils on the damaged item and thoroughly clean every crevice.
  • Surface Cleaning with Solvents – Surface cleaning is necessary for many of the items brought into our SERVPRO warehouse after a fire. We can identify the type of soiling and use chemical solvents, agitative practices, and abrasive methods to remove surface soot.
  • ESPORTA Wash System – Clothing and soft materials that cannot stand up to the immersion tank can get thoroughly cleaned with a gentle cycle with this advanced restoration technology.

Soot is often one of the most challenging obstacles for our team and homeowners to overcome after a fire loss incident. With so many variations of how this can damage your property, our experienced SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team can help with multiple approaches tailored to any soot presence in your house. Give our emergency line a call anytime at (302) 992-0104.

Call SERVPRO to Restore Your Wilmington Home After a Fire or Any Disaster

Fire is the probably most feared disaster for any homeowner. Except for being in a hurricane or tornado, it is the most physically damaging to a home. It leaves otherwise untouched property covered in soot residues left by burning material.

Which is Worse to Deal with, Soot Residues, or Physical Damage?

There is no worse type of damage, only different methods to deal with the different types of Wilmington fire damage. That’s why SERVPRO is the best option. Our crews train to deal with every type of damage to your home, regardless of what it may be.

Where Do Your Crews Begin?

After laying down plastic sheeting to avoid tracking residues into untouched areas, our crews pull out everything too damaged to repair or clean. That includes scorched items like carpets, flooring, wall paneling, and more.

After removing it all from your home, specialists then move in to clean each surface. Depending on the thickness and type of residue, team members use the following methods:

  • Dry Wiping – Specialists use sponges and cloths first to remove powdery residues left behind by higher temperatures and faster burning fires.
  • Wet Wiping – Here, team members use sponges and cloths with water or a cleaner to remove thicker layers of residues and stickier residues left by slower burning fires with a lower temperature.
  • Agitation – This method is preferred on stone and brick surfaces to remove any residues that penetrate the surface and resist dry and wet wiping.

What about the Smell?

SERVPRO specialists use cleaning agents designed to suppress and eliminate malodors generated by the soot residues. Where needed, they also have access to ozone generators designed to produce particles that bind with and eliminate odors, no matter how deeply they penetrate surfaces.

Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere today to restore your home here or in Newport. Start the process today by calling (302) 992-0104. We are here for you.

What Can I Do to Prepare for Storms & Flooding in Wilmington?

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

flooded laundry room in a home Floods can occur quickly and cause a large amount of damage to your home and displace you and your family. Call SERVPRO for flood damage remediation.

Wilmington is Prone to Flooding Like Many Parts of Delaware – Having a Natural Disaster Plan is Always Wise

In the United States, flooding is the most common natural disaster. It can happen in every state across the country. Making preparations for when disaster strikes removes the stress and damage to your family and Wilmington home.

Is All Flooding the Same?

Not all flooding is the same. Certain flooding happens over an extended period of heavy, steady rain. Flash flooding occurs rapidly and can occur suddenly with no warning. In the winter, when there is heavy snow and a surge of warm weather that can cause flooding. You are open to flooding whenever you live in near water, near dams, or in low lying areas. Flood damage can happen in your Wilmington home at any time.

Make A Plan

If disaster strikes, your family may not all be in the same place. An emergency plan lays out exactly what to do, so there is no confusion if something happens.

  • How you will contact each other
  • Where you will meet – a place for those inside the home and a place when some are not home.
  • Establish an out of town contact that can help with communications in case calling is a problem locally.
  • Knowing what the emergency plans are for your work, school, childcare, etc.
  • Copies for babysitters and caregivers.
  • Plans for what you will do with pets.
  • Flood insurance policy

When you do the above, you will have prepared your family in the case of any emergency, not just flooding. Practice the plan regularly, especially if you have young children who need to know where to go should something happen.

Put Together an Emergency Supply Kit

You will want to have certain things on hand should you experience a catastrophe in the home. Putting together a kit for the house in general and individual kits for each member of the house is an excellent idea. Make sure you have a good supply of non-perishable food and bottled water. A first aid kit, flashlights, extra batteries, and a battery-powered radio are all necessary items. A backpack with clothing, a special toy for children, water, and snacks is a good idea for each person. Other things to include in your kit may be:

  • Extra medical supplies and copies of prescriptions
  • Sleeping bags and bedding
  • Copies of important documents
    • Driver’s license
    • Social security cards
    • Birth and marriage certificates
    • Deeds
    • Wills

Know What to Look For

Understanding the different weather terms for storms and flooding can help you know what is coming your way. A flood watch means just that. The weather stations are watching for potential flooding in specific areas. Tune in to the local news to keep abreast of the situation. A flash flood warning means to be ready to move to higher ground or evacuate if flooding occurs. This is the time to move sensitive belongings to higher levels as well. If a flood warning is issued, it means flooding is on its way. If an evacuation warning is given, follow it. A flash flood warning means move immediately to higher ground. Don’t attempt to drive.

Emergency Water Mitigation

If your Wilmington home does experience flood damage, SERVPRO has rapid-response teams ready to provide emergency services. They will arrive at your home as quickly as possible and assess the situation for safety and health issues. Floodwaters bring all kinds of contaminants with them, and these must get dealt with on a professional level. Don’t attempt to enter your home until it is safe to do so. After determining the structure is safe, and the biohazard issues in the water are known, water extraction begins. The drying process follows that along with sanitizing and disinfecting.

Water Restoration Begins

Our technicians are Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified and have years of experience dealing with floods. Once they have your home dry, the cleaning process and restoration of the building and content starts. If possible, items will be cleaned on-site. Packout services are available if that is not possible. The goal is to return your home to you, “Like it never even happened.”

How Can I Tackle My Wilmington Water Damage Before Family Visits?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

Two men sliding down a set of stairs on a big red pillow. SERVPRO knows how important family is. Let us handle your water damage, so you can get back to the fun stuff.

SERVPRO Knows Best Practices for Water Mitigation to Ensure Your Entertaining in Wilmington Goes Off Without a Hitch

If you have plans for a family gathering, barbecue, or another celebration, the last thing you want is water damage to put a damper on the festivities. If you had a pipe burst that sends water into multiple rooms, cleaning up water safely and effectively is the best course of action. Instead of taking on the burden, SERVPRO has the manpower, proven cleaning methods, and innovative technology to make sure your Wilmington home is ready when guests are scheduled to arrive.

Not only is excessive moisture an issue with water mitigation in Wilmington, but there could be several potential hazards present. Our skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) follow best practices for helping you get the results you need. The faster that you take action to address the water, the less cost is involved, and less damage takes hold of your furnishings, belongings, and structural materials.

Can I Do Anything Until SERVPRO Arrives?

Once the pipe bursts and the incident becomes evident, it is essential that you try to shut off the water supply for preventing further loss. You can then contact your insurance company and call our team so that we can deploy a crew to your location.

How Much Water Damage Could There Be?

Depending on the situation, a burst pipe could send hundreds of gallons of water throughout the immediate loss zone. This water then migrates into dry spaces, leading to the potential for extensive damage to hardwood floors, carpeting, drywall, and anything else in the path. We are Faster to Any Size Disaster with any emergency call so that we can limit further damage to your property. Our crew chief knows how to handle each water emergency, and the assessment begins on arrival so that we can articulate the best possible restoration strategy.

What Types of Damage Am I Looking At?

We know that DIY methods using consumer products and tools might be tempting, especially if you have a planned gathering coming up. However, our skilled IICRC-certified technicians use the right tools for the job so that we can minimize damage from multiplying. When you have a burst pipe within your home, you could be faced with:

  •   Significant water infiltrating your home may put pressure on your building’s structure and cause wood and other natural materials to warp and deteriorate.
  •   Mold growth may start in as little as 24 hours because extensive moisture creates the ultimate environment for microbes to thrive.
  •   Water may start to migrate into wall cavities and subflooring, which calls for involved structural drying procedures.
  •   Stagnant water impacts your possessions as well as materials like carpeting, where permanent damage could result.

Is This Water Contaminated?

In most situations where a pipe bursts, it sends out clean water throughout the loss zone. This lessens the chance of contamination and increases our ability to salvage your possessions and various building materials. However, microbes are ever-present throughout your interior, and they can reproduce when given a chance to fester. Anything that your water comes into contact with during the event may also pose a challenge during cleanup.

Addressing Saturated Carpet

Our team gets to work fast when water migrates from a burst pipe in a kitchen or bathroom into adjoining rooms with carpeted floors. We pre-inspect and pre-test carpets to look for:

  •   Carpet style and fibers
  •   The level of soiling as well as the type of soil
  •   Colorfastness
  •   Carpet stain-resistance
  •   Pre-existing damage
  •   Any care instructions or warranties from the carpet manufacturer

Water extraction is critical to salvaging the carpeting, the carpet padding, and also the subfloor beneath. Drying is elemental in conjunction with extraction methods so that we can pull any remaining moisture from the carpet fibers. Effective drying measures keep the fibers from taking on additional soils while preventing microorganism growth. The dry times for your carpets depend on the moisture present, as well as the humidity and temperatures within the loss zone. Our crew follows a formula for drying that requires:

  •   Air movement
  •   Heat
  •   Low humidity

In many situations, we open doors and windows using ceiling fans, industrial fans, air movers, or your HVAC system to create the perfect atmosphere to foster efficient drying. If the weather is humid during the restoration project, we may require additional drying equipment or techniques to achieve our carpet drying goals.

Will My Interior Have Lingering Foul or Musty Odors?

Our goal is to bring your interior back to life so that you can enjoy your upcoming event or gathering at home. Our team has access to a selection of EPA-registered broad-spectrum disinfectants great for use on non-porous surfaces. We utilize all products per their labeling, and we follow guidelines for dilution and dispersal within your home. Everything is left clean, sanitized, and smelling fresh.

For any water mitigation needs that you have, count on our trained crew at SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere. We are available 24/7 for emergency service by calling (302) 992-0104.

A Burst Pipe in My Wilmington Factory Left Me Dealing With Water Damage. How Do I Restore it?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

A sky view of a factory warehouse. When it comes to your livelihood and what keeps your business up and running, add SERVPRO to the list we are ready to keep you in business.

Contact SERVPRO Technicians in Wilmington to Perform Commercial Water Damage Restoration in Your Factory.

It can be a significant setback to have your Wilmington factory shut down because of a water intrusion incident. A non-operational factory cannot make a profit, and even several hours of deal can cost you thousands of dollars. SERVPRO technicians can help you reduce losses and get you back to business quickly.

How do you begin water restoration?

We can begin the process of commercial water damage restoration in your Wilmington factory by inspecting the affected area thoroughly. We have advanced equipment that helps us to check the moisture levels on surfaces. Since water can travel into confined places such as wall cavities, and locker rooms, we can use a thermal imaging camera during the inspection. The device helps us to pinpoint areas where we should concentrate on during the drying process.

What can I do to ensure safety?

Water loss incidents in factories are severe problems for the individual business, emergency services, its staff, and the wider community. The safety of people in the factory is a priority. You can do the following to ensure safety during the water damage mitigation and restoration process.

  • Securing any hazardous or toxic materials
  • Shutting down machinery safely
  • Switching off electric and gas supplies
  • Offering safe access for emergency services

If the water intrusion has caught you unaware, it is essential to notify emergency services about any hazards present in your factory, especially if the rising waters mean that they could become general hazards.

How can you remove the water and moisture?

A majority of factories have an open layout, meaning that water can spread to a wide area of the shop floor quickly. Our team can use industrial-strength pumps to extract the water. Fast water removal can prevent the corrosion of metallic items and damage to the merchandise in your factory. We can also use drying equipment like centrifugal air movers and refrigerant dehumidifiers to restore the contents and structure of the facility to pre-water damage dryness. Our SERVPRO team also provides specialist drying services for delicate equipment and materials.

Once we complete the drying process, we can perform structural and cosmetic repairs. We can help you save money and time handling both the water damage restoration and rebuilding process. Our general contractor's license number is 1992104829.

If a water loss incident has happened in your factory, call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 for quick restoration. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

A Kitchen Fire Has Ruined My Home. Where Should I Seek Help?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

Kitchen after fire SERVPRO has the experienced technicians with the equipment and expertise your home needs after a fire mishap. Give us a call right away.

Contact SERVPRO Technicians in Wilmington to Perform Fire  Restoration in Your Property.

Many fires begin in the kitchen, and they can lead to severe destruction in a home. Immediately soot and smoke residues get into contact with water, the solution begins to discolor surfaces. SERVPRO technicians can help you to not only get your property back to its former glory but also minimize as much loss as possible.

What is fire damage restoration?

It is the process where professional restorers repair and restore homes after damage resulting from smoke, soot, fire, and corrosive byproducts. When you contact our technicians to perform fire restoration in your Wilmington property, we can take every restoration step seriously.

The water used to fight the flames may soak into various surfaces, weakening the structure while the charcoal-like odor may start to get stronger each day the fire damage mitigation and restoration process is delayed. Our restoration procedure involves water removal, cleaning soot from affected surfaces, and deodorization.

How do you prevent further damage from occurring?

Our technicians have decades of experience and access to state-of-the-art equipment that helps us mitigate fire damage of any size or scope. Our team of technicians comprises of:

Fabric and upholstery cleaning technician

Water damage restoration expert

An odor control technician

Our priority during restoration is to stop further damage. Heavy rains in your area can put your property at risk of water damage. Our technicians can protect your property from moisture by boarding up any openings, and weakened surfaces. We are proficient in water damage mitigation and restoration. This includes removing water from affected surfaces and drying them thoroughly.

We also check for moisture in a home during the fire restoration process. An eyeball test is not accurate for detecting moisture or areas affected by mold. SERVPRO technicians can use thermal imaging cameras to check for moisture in the affected property.

How do restorers clean surfaces covered with smoke and soot residues?

The soot and smoke residues that accompany a house fire can be impossible to clean without advanced cleaning products. That is because the staining that occurs during the unfortunate incident goes beyond the surface. We can use brown out mixed with shampoo super concentrate to remove colored spots and stains on carpet and fabric.

Cleaning the affected area does not necessarily mean that odors cannot linger throughout your property. The charcoal-like smell can hide in your furniture, carpets, and upholstery. Our technicians can use instant odor counteractant pellets to control the odor in your property. The pellets ensure your home smells fresh and clean.

A fire can cause irreversible damage to your property. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 for help. We can restore your property to its preloss state in a brief period, making the fire loss seem "Like it never even happened."

A Storm Has Left Me Dealing with Flood Damage in My Property. Who Can Help Me to Restore it?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

"Flooding" Our storm damage technicians have the equipment and experience to restore your property to pre-damage condition.

Talk to SERVPRO Technicians in Wilmington to Help You Handle the Flood Damage in Your Property.

When disaster strikes your property, the aftermath can cause more damage leading to costly repairs. Property owners go through a hard time trying to figure out what to do and where to pick up the pieces. However, if you contact restoration professionals in Wilmington within the first 24 hours, we can save your valuable items and property from the secondary damages.

Why involve a professional restoration company?

Floods in Wilmington can saturate your property and destroy your valuable items if not properly handled. Once the water is gone, most property owners assume that mopping and drying the affected area is enough to keep the storm flood damage in their Wilmington property at bay. However, your home needs more than that, depending on the damage extent. A reliable restoration company like SERVPRO can assess the damage and develop the most efficient restoration plan to turn your property into a suitable living space again. Acting fast by contacting professionals prevents secondary damage from taking place.

What are the secondary damages that may occur, and how do you handle them?

If flood damage is left unaddressed for over 48 hours, it can lead to:

Mold growth: Mold grows in less than 24 hours and only requires moisture. SERVPRO technicians use advanced products to treat the affected area. We can use Benefect, a disinfectant that destroys 99 percent of microorganisms it comes across on the affected surface.

Wood rot: When a wooden surface gets into contact with water for an extended period, it rots. This can cause major structural problems if not treated on time. Our technicians can dry the affected area in a brief period using our hi-tech equipment.

Odors: When floodwater flows, it gets into contact with sewage, tags, and dead animals. With time, odors may linger, and the property may become inhabitable. Our team of experts can use citrus deodorizer, a water-based product to combat the foul smell. We may also use a ULV fogger that produces a fine mist to eliminate the odors.

Electrical damage: When water gets into contact with electrical sockets, it can cause significant damage to the structure and the occupants. Therefore, it is essential to switch off the main switch to avoid such damages. We equip our professionals with portable generators that help with power distribution in an affected property.

With our expertise and resources, we can thoroughly clean your home’s surfaces and materials to restore it to its preloss state.

After flooding happens, it is possible to save your property. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 to handle the loss, and make it “Like it never even happened.”

There are Smoke and Soot Residues in My Home after a Fire. How Can I Remove Them?

6/16/2020 (Permalink)

smoke and soot damaged ceiling and wall Removing smoke damage is difficult. Trust the SERVPRO professionals to restore your home.

Hire SERVPRO Technicians to Perform Fire Restoration in Your Wilmington Residence

Soot and smoke residues may seem easy to clean, but specialized skills and advanced products are required to ensure a sufficient job. Therefore, it is essential to let professionals handle the fire restoration process in your Wilmington home to avoid costly secondary damage.

Why do I need to hire professionals?

The soot and smoke residues left behind after a fire are hazardous and can cause significant damages, including health problems to residents if not appropriately handled. Our SERVPRO team has the expertise and equipment required to perform fire restoration in your Wilmington home. We can assess the fire damage to determine the cost of recovery and to select the proper restoration techniques and equipment.

What secondary damages can soot and smoke residues cause?

It is essential to begin the fire restoration process quickly after extinguishing a fire since secondary damage can start immediately. The damage can cause costly repairs if ignored for an extended period. Some secondary damage can be irreversible, and it can raise restoration costs. Other damage like smoke odor can last for years in your home. The possible secondary damage that can result from smoke residues includes:

  • Discoloration of walls and ceilings.
  • Discoloration of kitchen appliance finishes.
  • Tarnishing of metal.
  • Etching of glass.

Can you remove soot from wood surfaces?

SERVPRO technicians have the skill and decades of experience in the restoration industry. We also have access to state-of-the-art equipment, tools, and products that help us deal with fire damage of any magnitude. Soot and smoke residues can settle on wooden surfaces, like kitchen and bathroom cabinets, shelves, furniture, and wood floors. These surfaces can be challenging to clean without the right products and skills.

Our team of technicians can restore these surfaces to their preloss state. Using a white towel to apply the product on the surfaces, we can use wood crème paste to clean wood surfaces with yellowing and soot and smoke residues. We use a white towel to apply the product on the covers and let it work for around three minutes. Our restorers then use a steel pad to scrub the affected surfaces in a circular motion until the area is clean.

What about the charcoal-like odor that is in my home?

Odors can make it difficult for you to live in the property. We use various professional products to deodorize affected homes. For instance, our restorers can use a ULV mister to apply a water-based wet mist deodorizer to the affected areas. A ULV mister produces a fine fog or mist that allows the chemical to get into surface cracks and crevices where smoke odors are present and eliminate them.

When you need fire restoration services, contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104. We provide fast fire damage restoration services in Hockessin, Newport, and Elsmere.

How to SERVPRO Tools Remove Home Water Damage?

  • Calculated placement of air movers and dehumidifiers prevents secondary damages. SERVPRO techs are trained to do the following in a water damage situation:
    • Carefully measure the moisture content of affected surfaces
    • Extract moisture without
    • Calculate placement for air movement and dehumidification equipment
  • EPA-registered antimicrobials eliminate mold risk. Sanitation is another critical element of water damage mitigation that removes mold and mildew risk while rectifying odors. A multitude of sanitation and deodorization methods are available, including sprays, fogging, manual cleaning, and injection systems for carpeting.

Tips for Changing Your HVAC Filters

  • How does changing the filter prevent water damage? Regular filter changes are not only beneficial for your indoor air quality. This routine maintenance task can also prevent your air conditioning from overworking to maintain comfortable temperatures in your home. An overworked air conditioning system can freeze and then defrost moisture on the evaporator coils, which can create water damage in your Wilmington home’s HVAC system.
  • How often should you change your filter? This can vary based on the type of filter you use and what is needed for your specific HVAC system. Typical replacement intervals for filters are monthly and semi-annually.
Another factor that affects how often you need to replace your filter is how frequently you use your HVAC system. Prevent HVAC issues by checking on your filter regularly before replacing it.
  • What type of filter should you use? High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters set the standard for high indoor air quality. Check the manual for your system to determine the specific type of filter you need. Depending on the filter’s placement, a professional may need to change the filter for you. Call a trusted contractor for filter changes if it is located in your furnace or air handler.

Maintenance Tasks for Your Condensation Drain Line

The condensation drain line is another area where water damage can develop. Here is what you can do to lower the risk of this happening:

  • Check the line opening while your AC is running to ensure that water is flowing to the drain. The level of flow is contingent on the humidity levels in your home.
  • Is the pipe appropriately oriented? A drain line that is out of alignment can cause water damage because of this.
  • Are both the drain line and the emergency drain line adequately connected and installed? Mechanical failures can stem from even small deviations from manufacturer instructions. Double-check the drain lines to ensure nothing is out of place or damaged.
  • Clear out the AC drainage holes regularly. This can be done with something as simple as a paperclip. Poke the drainage hole at the cabinet’s base, typically located underneath the evaporator fins. Clearing out these drainage holes prevents water from accumulating and potentially damaging your system.
  • Flush out the drain line once or twice a year with an algaecide, which inhibits both algae and mold growth in your HVAC system. Commercial solutions and bleach are both useful for this purpose.

SERVPRO Restores Your HVAC System

SERVPRO technicians can handle a variety of cleanup and restoration tasks for your HVAC system and surrounding structural materials, including:

  • Partial disassembly of sheet metal vents for thorough disinfection with EPA-registered antimicrobials.
  • Coated fiberboard and flex duct vents may require removal after water damage exposure and are typically more cost-effective to replace than repair.
  • The insulation lining your vents can also be examined and replaced.

Specially trained Technicians are Working to Protect Your Employees and Customers

According to the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) and the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) latest reports, the most effective means of controlling the transfer of viruses from surfaces is to strictly follow CDC guidelines concerning the proper cleaning and application of EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectants.

SERVPRO is well-versed in applying EPA-registered disinfectants to ensure effective pandemic preventative cleaning for Hockessin businesses and homes. SERVPRO crews are available to serve the local community 24/ 7, working together to reduce risks to our community.

Because the current viral outbreak is a public health concern, it takes everyone in the community participating in conservative safety measures to reduce the risk of infection. Let’s all remember to:

  • Wash our hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Make sure our dishes, appliances, doorknobs, and touchpoints are kept clean
  • Stick to social distancing protocols when possible

When it comes to cleaning, we encourage you to consider talking to a professional to discuss the options and advanced level of services that are available to you.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere would be pleased to answer your question and discuss a one-time or routine program that might be best for you. Call (302) 992-0104.

How Do I Handle a Roof with a Hole from a Fire Until Repairs in Wilmington Can Get Made?

5/10/2020 (Permalink)

charred interior of house Fire damage can displace families in the most severe cases. Contact SERVPRO to mediate the damage to make sure this doesn’t happen to your family.

SERVPRO technicians arrive quickly and perform temporary repairs to stop any further loss from occurring in your Wilmington home

After a fire in Wilmington, it is not uncommon for doors to either get stuck shut or suddenly be unable to close completely due to warping and swelling of the doorframe. Flames can quickly eat holes in the roof or walls, and windows may break from heat, pressure, or fire fighting efforts. When SERVPRO technicians handle restoration services in local properties affected by fire loss, one of the first actions they take is to secure the property with such tactics as:

  • Boarding up doors
  • Securing windows
  • All entrances get secured
  • Security fencing may get erected if deemed necessary
  • Tarping over damaged roofing or windows to protect the home from the elements during mitigation

Interior Clearing Out Serves Two Purposes

As SERVPRO techs remove charred items from the interior of the home with fire damage in Wilmington, they also inspect each thing removed for the potential for restoration through various cleaning methods. Soot-covered items from a china cabinet destroyed in a fire may also look like a loss. Still, after testing residues and construction materials that make up the items, so the best cleaning application gets chosen, they may have complete restoration possibilities for reuse in the home.

During firefighting efforts, the first responders remove smoldering elements from the structure and contents and place them in the center of the room and douse it with water. More items and materials get added to this pile with copious amounts of water. When the fire gets extinguished, there is often a pile of very wet items and pieces of the home in the center of the room. This is the debris pile that SERVPRO techs go through to find restorable objects.

Frequently Seen Actions to Mitigate Fire Loss

Unfortunately, in the case of fire damage in a Wilmington property, it often needs to look worse to get restored fully. Charred building materials get removed as they contribute nothing but odor. It is not unusual to see a room with significant fire damage taken down to the framework when this occurs; the techs prep the structure for the needed repairs.

Regarding carpet, SERVPRO techs know carpeting is an investment and work hard to restore installed floor coverings. If the fibers do show evidence of damage from the heat, such as melting or deterioration from water, there is often restoration potential. The techs can clean and dry the carpet (also area rugs), and with their deep-reaching steam cleaners, leave the carpet refreshed without a sign of fire loss.

Hardwood flooring gets inspected on a case by case as many factors that are unique to the fire loss situation can affect the outcome of the restoration efforts.

Ceramic tile often fares the best of any of the flooring types customarily found in a home as long as the grout line seal does not receive damage from the heat. If the seal is intact, the subfloor gets protected from water and heat.

If the water used in firefighting efforts seeped into the subfloor as verified by the moisture detection equipment. The techs utilize several different types depending on the surface they are scoping. The devices allow them to peer under floors and other areas with ease to track the precise migration path of the water.

Mold Remediation Needs are Possible

As part of their extensive training in the restoration sciences, the techs are always on the lookout for signs of mold infestation. Naturally-occurring airborne spores can germinate whenever conditions are right and spread quickly throughout the structure. The techs know the early warning signs and take preventative measures to stop mold damage before it starts.

Restoration Goes Easier When You Use One Service for All

A home fire is one of the most stressful events that can affect a property owner. Years of investments in improvements, appliances, and valued collections may get ruined in a flash. Lumping the task of finding, vetting, and hiring a contractor to rebuild the damaged areas can be a headache. SERVPRO technicians have extensive on-going education for the latest in restoration techniques, and they also hold a general contractor license #1992104829, so they can shift from the cleanup to the reconstruction seamlessly. The techs can complete:

  • Needed structural repairs
  • Roofing
  • Painting
  • Carpet installation
  • And any other needed actions make the home ready for habitation

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 brings compassion and professionalism to every fire damage cleanup and restoration. Using a combination of their experience, advanced equipment, and expertise, they can return a home to its pre-fire condition.

How does SERVPRO help determine what to save?

• Depth of charring in wooden materials

Water Damage in Wilmington Home Office Needs Fast Help

Most basements get used as a catch-all for storage or a spare room. In the present, many homeowners use their basements as a home office, as so many work opportunities are available for home-based workers. When water damage happens, it can make it tough for someone to work from home.

Even with significant waterproofing efforts, water damage still can occur in Wilmington basements from unforeseen situations such as pipe breaks, a hot water tank fails and flash flooding. When a homeowner with a home-based business had a pipe break in their finished basement, they needed water cleanup and restoration services, to cause as little downtime as possible.

Move Out of Important Items

There was not a significant amount of water on the slab floor, but the homeowner could not use the home office during mitigation. SERVPRO techs moved out computer equipment, a desk and a filing cabinet needed to keep working in another area of the home, which also opened up the floor space for easier extraction of the water.

Water Removal

Along with water extraction, the techs cut away the sheetrock around the walls that wicked water to open up the area between the framing and the cinderblock walls for drying. Using portable pumps with squeegee attachments ensured that as much moisture as possible was raised to the surface and picked up. Any water left within the concrete substrate can get prompted to rise from the high-velocity airflow delivered by the centrifugal air movers.

Full Restoration Services

After completing the extraction and drying efforts, the techs offer any rebuilding or repairs necessary and through their general contractor license #1992104829. They have the experience and skill to do any rebuilding needed to bring the home to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 has certified techs available 24/7 for water damage cleanup and restoration in local properties to make the water loss, "Like it never even happened."

Who Cleans Up the Water After a Pipe Breaks in My House?

Get the Help You Need from SERVPRO’s Highly Qualified Wilmington Residential Water Damage Restoration Team

The media covers storm-based water and flood damage relentlessly, but the reality is that most water losses result from aging or broken plumbing, accidental overflows, and appliance malfunctions. When the crisis is confined to your home rather than involving your community or region, you might wonder, is there any company willing to help with a one-household water emergency?

Is It Safe to Let Water Drain and Dry Out on Its Own?

Finding reliable, professional water cleanup in Wilmington is critical to protecting your home’s structure and your furnishings, household goods, and personal possessions. Even the clean water from a supply pipe is incredibly corrosive, powerful enough to cause the following issues, among others, if not removed from your dwelling fast:

  • Deterioration and crumbling of drywall
  • Warping of wood framing
  • Rusting of metal supports and fasteners
  • Saturation and weakening of subfloors
  • Cupping, crowning, and buckling of hardwood floors
  • Bulging and breakdown of ceiling tiles
  • Blistering of paint and peeling of wallpaper

What Happens If I Wait A Few Days Before Dealing with Water Cleanup?

Understandably, you might want to take your time when responding to the effects of a water loss. For many other home safety and maintenance issues, common sense dictates that a homeowner investigates options and calls several experts for recommendations and bids. Unfortunately, after a residential water event, pausing even a few hours can result in permanent and irreparable damage.

What Are the Timeframes for Water Damage?

  • Minutes to Hours:

Water spreads far from the source, soaking contents and structural components. Painted and finished furniture stain carpets and other floor coverings. Some items like books, pictures, documents, and electronics sustain immediate damage and must be assessed for restoration quickly to prevent ruin.

  • Hours to a Day:

Drywall and lath and plaster begin to swell and break up. Wooden furniture warps and upholstery stretches and seams split as padding absorbs moisture. Metal items tarnish and rust. Some molds begin growing in as few as 24 hours.

  • Two Days to a Week:

Doors and windows distort, becoming less plumb and failing to open and shut properly, creating security issues. Hardwood warps and newer laminate flooring experiences delamination, separating into layers and requiring removal and replacement. Wet carpeting provides the perfect environment for molds and mildews, which also proliferate on all organic surfaces and in building cavities.

  • Beyond a Week:

Microbial growth continues, causing significant biohazard concerns for the health and welfare of occupants. The structural integrity of your home becomes more compromised day by day. Water cleanup delayed this long becomes more expensive, and you also run the risk of losing much of your furniture, clothing, window coverings, household items, and a broad range of personal items.

How Does a Professional Water Cleanup Company Respond if I Ask for Help?

SERVPRO knows that water emergencies do not occur only during regular business hours. We maintain our answering system 24/7 so you can expect an assessment during the critical first hours after the plumbing or appliance fail. Our managers and technicians master comprehensive training from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), preparing our team to use restoration industry best practices throughout your project. You can expect the following services:

  • Expert Assessment of Your Scenario

Why do we take the time to investigate?

Every home is different, and we must locate utilities, debris, confined spaces, and potential contamination to design a restoration plan that meets all your needs for water cleanup and structural drying.

  • Scene Securing and Emergency Services

What does our crew do first?

  • Immediately after our crew chief gives the go-ahead, our technicians address:
    • Slip, trip, and fall potential
    • Barricading obvious hazards
    • Electrical and other utility shut-offs for safety
    • Commencement of pumping in water deeper than two inches
    • Truck-mounted extraction of standing water
  • Moisture Detection, Metering, and Thermal Imaging

Why do we check for hidden water and moisture migration?

If our technicians do not find and eliminate all trapped and pooled water, the liquids continue to break down building materials and create conditions conducive to mold growth. The data we record also give our Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians the information needed when determining drying goals and equipment placement.

  • Application of the Principles of Psychrometry

Why Can’t We Just Let Our Homes Dry Out Naturally After Water Removal?

We all observe drying activity every day. Our hair dries after a shower and dishes dry on a rack. Plants wilt and die if the soil around their roots dries out. Is it vital to pay for structural drying?

Psychrometry is the science of drying. SERVPRO employees know how air, water, and temperature interact to evaporate moisture absorbed by permeable building materials. We manipulate these variables to encourage appropriate drying rates, assisted by dehumidifying equipment.

  • Some things to note:

How do we determine the “normal” moisture content we strive to replicate as we dry structures?

We test similar materials in an unaffected space of your home or another comparable structure.

Can materials be dried too quickly?

Wood floors are an example of a structural component we must monitor continuously so that drying is steady and even, to avoid distortion, cracking, or shrinkage.

Our mission at SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is to help the residents of our community to recover rapidly and completely from water damage of any intensity. Call (302) 992-0104 to schedule a speedy assessment and plan for a successful outcome.

Heartwarming Holiday Story: Why SERVPRO Is Proud to Support the Hockessin Area Communities

So many different things go into defining the elusive concept of community. Inspiration can be found even in the face of catastrophic damage, as beautifully expressed by a family who battled through personal disaster to make sure a treasured Christmas tradition continued. The strength of our neighbors in the face of extreme adversity is why we feel privileged to be part of fire damage victims’ recovery stories.

A Treasured Tradition Sustained
Despite a severe fire near Hockessin, a West Caln Township couple prioritized their 23-year-strong celebration of the season. During the span of nearly a quarter-century, the stunning light display of holiday cheer became part of many others’ yearly Christmas observance. Over 32,000 lights create a joyful and magical atmosphere, a shining example of why our area boasts a welcoming and close-knit sense of community. Just days before Christmas, a fire tore through the family’s home, threatening to snuff out this year’s exhibition.

Determination and Commitment Denies Disaster
Although the blaze displaced the Chester County couple for up to six months, they refused to give up their yearly labor of love and fellowship. Children worried about Santa and families fearing loss of a tradition were delighted to find the jolly fellow, and Mrs. Claus still waited for their visit, sparkling lights and illuminated characters, making everything festive and bright. The opportunity arose for our team to support this inspirational couple’s commitment, why SERVPRO was honored to help supply the power to turn on the lights.

Generator-Powered Preservation of Tradition: Making New Memories
The coming together of community members under the glow of 26,000 of the 32,000 lights was made possible through modern electrical technology. Our inventory of powerful generators helped the seasonal show go on, but the dedication of the homeowners provided the fundamental sense of hope and perseverance. This example of the strength of individuals thriving despite adversity is why SERVPRO is humbled and honored to help restore this highly-anticipated tradition.

Generator power is just one of the ways we help uplift customers and the community, why SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is privileged to be in the restoration business. Call (302) 992-0104 when disaster strikes. We would love to join in your recovery.

Avoiding Hazards After Flood Damage in Wilmington

Living in Wilmington, homeowners are typically prepared for a flood and understand that flooding is America's most common natural disaster. Chances are you have an emergency kit and a plan for when a disaster strikes. Often people are prepared for when a flood hits but do not always consider the aftermath of the flood and the implications to your home.

Flood damage in your Wilmington home following a natural disaster is common and requires immediate attention. Often the floodwater recedes so there is not a need for pumping out water and large-scale extraction but the water left can be contaminated and even carrying dangerous microbes with bacteria or viruses. It is crucial to clean up properly after a flood and be mindful of potential hazards

SERVPRO technicians comply with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards to ensure the safety of residents and their own safety. This means that the lead technician or project manager inspects for hazards before work in your home begins. They identify hazards such as damaged ceilings that could collapse, slipping hazards, electrical dangers, clearly contaminated water, and other things that may pose safety issues.

SERVPRO flood damage restoration technicians have a hierarchical system for determining the plan for avoiding the hazard. The first thing they decide is if they can get rid of or eliminate the hazard, or can they substitute something else in its place. Second, they decide if they may need to engineer a structure or path within the work environment to avoid the situation and limit the exposure to risk.

Third, they decide if they can accomplish the through administrative means, meaning workers may be trained to do something differently. As a last resort, technicians wear personal protective gear (PPE) to protect themselves from potential hazards. However, this is typically the last resort when it comes to hazardous conditions after a flood.

Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere (General Contractor: 1992104829) at (302) 992-0104 for 24/7 assistance after a flood or any other disaster. We make it "Like it never even happened."

Water Cleanup In Your Wilmington Kitchen

2/29/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged home We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Slow Leak Gets Fast Water Cleanup in Wilmington Kitchen

When a supply line breaks or an appliance such as a washing machine malfunctions, a large amount of water damage has the potential to occur, slow leaks can be even worse. They slowly soften and ruin sheetrock, encourage mold growth, and can be the root cause of more expensive repairs for homeowners.

A slow leak in a Wilmington Kitchen created the need for water cleanup when the supply line to the kitchen sink gave way. The homeowner shut off the water to the home at the main and called SERVPRO.

Scoping Yields Answers to Water Loss
The techs used their moisture detection equipment to determine the areas of excessive moisture and found around the supply line leaked for an extended period. Much of the sheetrock at the back of the cabinet showed signs of softening and too much absorption of water.

Removal of Damaged Sheetrock
As building materials with that much exposure to water have zero restoration potential, the technicians cleanly cut it away to remove the damaged areas and stop any further wicking of water.

Challenging Extraction Needs
Little standing water remained in the kitchen, but SERVPRO technicians used their portable extractors to lift away as much residual moisture as possible from the interior of the kitchen cabinet and under it by removing the toe kick.

Drying the Kitchen
Air movers deliver high-velocity airflow into the wet areas, and the force causes embedded moisture to rise. The dehumidification equipment captures the water vapor and ports it away. This cycle creates expedited drying and is especially useful in closed in areas, such as within cabinets.

Repairing the Water Loss
Returning the kitchen to its preloss condition involves making the necessary repairs to the sheetrock and replacing the toe kick under the cabinet after the repairs to the supply line completed by the plumber hired by the homeowner. SERVPRO has a general contractor license #1992104829, and this allows the techs to go straight into the final repairs after the water mitigation efforts conclude.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 has certified professional technicians ready to come to your home for water cleanup and restoration services 24/7. With their experience and advanced equipment, they make the water loss, “Like it never even happened.”

A thriving public service industry can be serving drinks and food throughout the day to hundreds of customers. Your washrooms can be in constant use during a busy service, which can make it tough for staff to conduct regular checks. Sewer blockages can result in the presence of urine or sewage, presenting a health and safety concern for the property manager.

Sometimes water cleanup in your Wilmington business can go beyond the scope of your regular staff or janitorial team. As a business owner, you need a quick response that allows you to continue focusing on your clientele. Fast Commercial Water Cleanup in Wilmington Helps Keep Bowling Alley Open

A water spill incident at a Wilmington bowling alley threatened to bring down a community center with a rich history. SERVPRO managed to control the situation and helped it reopen in due time because of the fast action we took after learning about the incident.

The situation seemed like any other straightforward commercial water cleanup case in Wilmington because it did not involve black or grey water that usually requires elaborate decontamination procedures. However, some unique properties of the facility made the otherwise straightforward process of water extraction and cleanup more difficult. Our SERVPRO technicians had to rely on the preparation we had done before arriving at the loss site and improvise along the way.

The main challenge to the cleanup was the wood lanes since overexposure to water, or expedited drying could cause imperfections in the wood, thus ruining the experience for bowlers. Wet-vacuuming the floors helped remove the surface water from the floors and bowling lanes. We also used other cleaning procedures such as mild agitation of the floor surfaces and the use of detergents to remove soils and other residues left by the standing water. Setting up drying chambers over the wooden lanes helped manage the drying process, quickening results, and preventing adverse outcomes such as warping or swelling.

Safety was another issue while working to restore the alley because the lanes were extremely slippery when wet. Our SERVPRO technicians use rubber boots, which have a better grip over slippery surfaces compared to other types of footwear. We also plan the loss sites before starting work to ensure cables and hoses that can trip anyone visiting the loss site are moved out of the way. Therefore, we managed to clean the area with no incident.

Water damage incidents in Hockessin, Newport, and Elsmere can present various cleaning challenges. Call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 to help clean up and deal with any challenges an incident causes at your property, “Like it never even happened.”

How Can Soot Damage Your Wilmington Home?

1/18/2020 (Permalink)

Items covered in soot Our team of experts are available to help you day or night. Give us a call anytime.

Improving Air Quality While Working to Protect You and Your Wilmington Home From The Harmful Effects Of Soot

While many people hear the word soot and think of charming chimney sweeps from films of days gone by, the actual presence of soot is much more threatening to Wilmington homeowners than these nostalgic productions might have advertised. Soot is a collection of particles created by incomplete combustion, each of which is smaller than individual mold spores, dust, or dirt particulates.

As organic materials burn up in your house, this is one of the fire damages to Wilmington homes that can almost always exist. Because of its microscopic size, particles of soot are harmful if inhaled by humans and pets, and they can get deep into the lungs of the affected individual and lead to potential health effects. For this reason, it is always a priority of our SERVPRO team to focus on air quality control when we first begin mitigation services. Even our project manager, walking through the address before we start our work wears the appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent inhaling the circulating soot.

Air regulatory equipment can get deployed to trap and remove most of these circulating soot particles from the environment. For this specific purpose, one of the most common choices is our air scrubber tool. We must also remain mindful that through practices like a controlled demolition and debris removal, that soot particles could get airborne and become a threat again.

As a residue, soot can continue to be threatening to the material supporting this layer of carbon. Because soot is acidic, direct exposure to many surfaces can ultimately lead to marring and irreparable damage without the intervention of our SERVPRO professionals. We have numerous cleaning strategies for soot-damaged surfaces, including agitative pre-treatments and potent products, to dissolve residues before wiping them from the surface. One of the most important and basic pieces of equipment in our arsenal for surface cleaning of soot and other residues is a small, portable HEPA filtered vacuum.

Because we understand how destructive that soot can be, we ensure that its management and containment are among the chief elements of mitigation tasks. Our experienced SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team can make any fire loss situation “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call today at (302) 992-0104.

  • Shut off the water. To prevent further water damage, empty your washer and shut off the water supply connected to the machine.
  • Inspect the machine. Washers can have leaks from various sources, with some of the most common being the water supply hoses in the back of the unit, internal hoses, and the pump. Check hoses carefully for mineral deposits and rust that can indicate a leak.
  • Replace components. Your local hardware store is likely to have compatible replacement parts for many components of a washing machine, including hoses. Consider braided cables, which are designed to be more resistant to leaking. Replace hose washers and other hardware that connects your appliance to the water supply. For pump replacements, use a car jack or 2x4s to angle the machine and prevent tipping during repairs. If the belt is burnt or worn down to its threads, replace it as well.

SERVPRO Offers Tips for Buying Second-hand Appliances in Wilmington

12/26/2019 (Permalink)

Box of used appliances on the floor Before you buy, check used appliances for frayed cords and other defects.

Thoroughly Checking Second-Hand Appliances Helps Prevent Fire Damage in Wilmington

Finding used appliances for sale in the local paper saves money in many situations. However, it would be best if you had more than a clean appliance. Plugging in the appliance gives you a chance to make sure it works before purchasing and taking it to your Wilmington residence. It is also useful if you use that time also to examine the cord and mechanical components, listen for any abnormal noises, or smell any odors that indicate smoldering parts.

Depending on the severity of any problems you detect, fixing them after you buy, but before you use them in your Wilmington home, can keep fire damage from becoming a reality. A frayed cord might develop when a washing machine ‘walks’ due to an uneven floor or unbalanced seating. This defect is entirely different than finding worn out internal motor parts. You can easily repair a cord by replacing it with the correct gauge, but a new motor might pose more of a challenge.

Lamps and chandeliers often have the highest wattage you can safely use in these fixtures shown in a prominent place. Using a 100-watt bulb in a lamp stating 60 watts or less can start a fire. This might happen because of overloaded wiring or because of materials that melt when you leave the higher watt bulb on for too long.

The danger of fire damage from the much smaller-sized lights used in holiday decorations comes from any nicks in the wiring, lost or burnt-out bulbs, or the accumulation of heat that ignites something near the lights. All lights used in the previous year need to be checked before use. Also, a smart habit against fire damage is to never leave electrical decorations on when leaving the house or overnight while your family sleeps.

Unfortunately, even with precautions, fire damage can still happen. SERVPRO has the specialists and technicians needed to make things “Like it never even happened.” Mitigation of areas affected by fire, smoke, and intense heat, followed by restoration work, undoes the damage. For the worst, most intensive damage, our building crew, under license number 1992104829, teams up with us so we can still provide our customers with a rapid recovery and excellent work.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is nearby, also serving Newport and Greenville. We hope your family home does not experience fire damage, but if it does, call (302) 992-0104. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster and can help reduce the stress associated with such disasters, any time of the year.

Be Prepared for Severe Storms in the Wilmington Area--Call SERVPRO for Advice or Service

12/18/2019 (Permalink)

encapsulated crawlspace, poly sheeting SERVPRO Says to Protect Wilmington Crawlspaces from Storms and Flooding with Encapsulation

Fixing and Preventing Wind Storm Damage in Wilmington

Each year in the United States, at least 867,000 people are affected by thunderstorms. Lightning alone accounts for at least 300 injuries per year. Globally, 16 million thunderstorms occur each year, and at least 2,000 storms are causing damages and injuries at any given time. Not only are severe storms and related damages stressful for homeowners to endure, but repairs can be costly and lead to long-term damages from mold and bacteria without professional cleanup. Is your number up?

If your Wilmington home has offered storm and flood damage, IICRC-certified SERVPRO technicians are always available to return your home to a preloss condition whenever possible. These technicians use EPA-registered antimicrobials along with a bevy of cutting-edge technologies to safely clean and repair structures. This SERVPRO also has a contracting license for general, residential, and commercial purposes (#1992104829), so you can have your residence fixed even more quickly by a professional, well-rounded team.

Storm-Proofing Your Windows
?    Window replacements. Consider replacing your current windows with heavy-duty ones that have built-in wind resistance. Many modern windows are crafted from shatter-resistant glass that can lower energy costs and improve insulation.
?    Hurricane film. This quick, low-maintenance storm prevention option can stay in place all year long. Hurricane film also protects against UV rays. If debris or other circumstances break your windows, this film can also prevent glass shards from entering your property. However, hurricane film cannot prevent the displaced window frames.
?    Storm shutters. One of the primary causes of damaged windows is high-speed winds from storms. These winds can fling debris, hail, and many other items at high speeds that can cause considerable damage to structures. However, storm shutters offer adequate protection against such occurrences.

How SERVPRO Restores Your Home
If leakage from a displaced window frame or loose window seal is affecting your walls and hardwood floors, SERVPRO technicians have a variety of extraction tools available to prepare the area for drying. For small-scale damages, floorboards can be dried and replaced as necessary depending on their condition. Small holes may be drilled in walls to encourage ventilation, which is especially beneficial for drying insulation that has been affected by water. Technicians may erect polyethylene chambers to facilitate drying in a more contained space.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere strives to leave your home looking, "Like it never even happened." For lightning-fast disaster cleanup 24/7, call (302) 992-0104.

Why Calling SERVPRO is the Best Decision for Dealing With Mold Damage Situations in Wilmington

12/15/2019 (Permalink)

mold damages bathroom Regardless whether a mold infestation happens in a home or a business, calling team SERVPRO for remediation is the right decision.

Successful Commercial Mold Damage Remediation in Wilmington

No one wants to deal with mold growth in Wilmington. The stakes increase for business owners doing their best to cope with the challenge of microbial infestation in areas where the public visit or employees work. High on the list of concerns are health and safety regulations that evaluate problems like mold growth and abatement efforts when operating licenses are renewed, and premises monitored.

A local business had mold damage on their Wilmington campus, infesting the walls in a restroom. Bathrooms and other areas laced with plumbing lines and higher than average humidity levels are prone to mold growth. Proper mold remediation protocols must be followed in any space. In rooms where the potential for water spills, leaks, and increased relative humidity is elevated, repair of leaks and strict adherence to spill cleanup and water vapor removal via exhaust fans or dehumidifiers is critical. Minimizing moisture is the only sure way to limit mold growth.

The business owner believed the mold growth had been addressed appropriately in the bathroom. Relief turned to dismay when evidence of mold resurfaced. If mold remediation does not follow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) procedures developed for schools and commercial spaces, the resurgence of mold damage is probable. Improperly corrected mold damage was the reason the business reached out to SERVPRO.

Conventional cleaning methods are not up to the task of clearing mold away. The diluted detergents, solvents, and soaps employed by housekeeping crews or inadequately trained mold technicians often contribute to the problem by adding water that fuels mold growth. Painting over the stains does not solve the problem. Mold continues to grow under paint.

As seen in the picture, a layer of paint covered the previous mold growth near the baseboard but did not prevent a rebound. Signs of the return of mold damage are apparent, including bubbling, discoloring, and peeling of the paint. As soon as the business noted the unsatisfactory results, SERVPRO received the call.

We sent an experienced mold remediation project manager to evaluate the situation. Using moisture meters, crews sketched out the perimeters of the mold colony. Our crew followed the multi-step process mandated by the EPA:

  • Containment of the Affected Area
  • Removal of Mold Organisms and Mold-Infested Building Materials
  • Scrupulous Cleanup of Debris
  • Bagging of Mold and Debris and Lawful Disposal
  • Disinfection with EPA-Registered Products

Our construction division took over the task of repairing and rebuilding areas of the wall damaged by the mold and remediation actions. Holding both a general and a commercial contractor’s license allowed us to manage mold remediation and material restoration from start to finish. Clean inspection reports and the pride of providing clean restroom space to employees, customers, and the public is why SERVPRO ranks near the top of mold remediation service companies in the area.

Business owners need just one consultation to put SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere on their list of reliable mold remediation contractors. Call us at (302) 992-0104 with any questions, and we would be happy to drop by for an assessment.

A kitchen stovetop that caught on fire This fire was a result of a stove top being left on and unattended for too long. We arrived right away and began restoration.

What to do When Fire Devastates Your Wilmington Home

Fire damage is a devastating reality for people who experience a fire in their homes. After you ensure everyone in the house is safe, you must go about the task of recovery and restoration. Time is of the essence, especially with significant fire damage. There are some things you may be able to do on your own, but you should also contact the professionals right away.

Fire damage in your Wilmington home is traumatic, but springing into quick action could ensure restoration instead of replacement. SERVPRO is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist in your time of need. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

During the time that you wait for professional assistance, first and foremost, make sure you are safe. Safety should always come first. Walking on soot-covered floors can be a serious slip and fall risk. After ensuring everyone in the residence is safe, secure valuables, keepsakes, and relevant documents. Move them off the premises, if possible, to keep them away from the lingering odor of smoke.

When trained professionals from SERVPRO arrive, they assess the damage. The amount of fire, smoke, and soot damage dictates the extent of the repairs. This is a critical step in developing a plan of action. Right away, technicians board up windows and any gaping holes, as well as tarp roofs to keep the structure safe and protect against secondary damage.

Next, SERVPRO technicians tackle removing and cleaning soot from your belongings. Then we attack the odor. Smoke odor is often the most stubborn part of fire damage. Smoke can permeate through every nook and cranny of the home. We use specialized deodorizers and equipment, catering to your unique situation. If clouds of smoke filled your home, we similarly fog the house to make sure the deodorizer reaches everywhere throughout the home. After your home is clean and deodorized, technicians begin rebuilding structural damage. We are general contractors, license number 1992104829, and have the skills to restore your home.

We Discuss How To Prevent Storm Damage To Your Wilmington Crawlspace With Encapsulation

11/23/2019 (Permalink)

Crawlspace after storm damage Give our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team a call for an estimate and assessment at (302) 992-0104.

Preventing Storm Damage with Wilmington Crawlspace Encapsulation

Direct care of the crawlspace beneath a Wilmington home can help to reduce and even prevent loss and damage after severe weather events take place. Even contending with excessive groundwater that can become an issue after a steady rain, encapsulation provides a means of protecting the crawlspace from immediate damages and preventing the migration of hazardous and harmful effects to the living space above this open area.

Preventing a flood in Wilmington crawlspaces begins with having the right installed barriers and protective measures. Our SERVPRO team can assess the needs of your crawlspace in this regard by speaking with the homeowner and getting underneath your home to directly examine the affected areas.

Encapsulation hinges on the installation and application of thick 6 mil lay-flat poly sheeting. This material is the same used by our professionals to contain a damaged area for more efficient and effective drying or recovery. In this sense, the sheeting gets installed along the ground, and in many cases, the walls of the crawlspace and even along the floor joists above this area. The plastic sheeting is moisture resistant, keeping any groundwater or flooding from seeping through it.

Water diversion equipment can also help you to do even more to combat groundwater and the destructive flooding after severe weather events. With the installation of devices like sump pumps, our SERVPRO team can redirect water flow from this crawlspace area out to a drainage area a safe distance from your household.

Preventing moisture in this space beneath the main floor of your house reduces the threat of microbial and fungal growth. Preventing colonization of mold spores can also help to reduce any airborne health effects that come with exposure to these colonies when they affect subflooring and supports underneath the floor of your first level.

Knowing what to expect with crawlspace encapsulation can help homeowners to appreciate how they can better protect their properties commonly affected by flooding and storm damage. Give our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team a call for an estimate and assessment at (302) 992-0104.

Ways to Prevent Fire Damage and Accidents that Protect Your Family in Hockessin.

11/17/2019 (Permalink)

A fire extinguisher, and fire alarm laying on a green backgruond. SERVPRO knows prevention, let us show your Hockessin home.

Let us help your Hockessin home prevent fire damage.

A fire requires both fuel and oxygen to burn. While it produces heat, it also requires initial heat to start consuming both fuel and oxygen. A fire can happen in any part of your Hockessin home, damaging both your belongings and your family members. Fire can begin in different ways and places.

Fortunately, there are many ways that residents in Hockessin can prevent fire damage from harming their property or causing injuries that hurt their family members. Many of these involve keeping heat sources away from fuels. Oxygen makes up almost 30% of the air, so we need to control errant sparks, instead.

Fuel sources come in many forms – wood, paper, carpeting, clothing, plastics – in short, almost everything inside your home can feed a fire. Sparks and localized areas of intense heat happen within our homes in many ways that we often do not notice. Friction creates enough heat to light a match or lighter, or it can also wear a hole into an electric cord.

Electrical cords

Exposed wires can spark, catching fuel items on fire. Because of this, SERVPRO technicians never place cords underneath rugs or mats. We also check our equipment for cuts in cords and make repairs before they can worsen. Sometimes this means replacing the cord with a new one of the same gauge. Smaller wires should not be used because smaller cords cannot handle the amount of electricity needed to power the equipment. Hanging cords on nails or hooks can also cause the wires inside to break.

Cooking

Cooking fires do not always happen because of grease or oil that caught on fire. Fire damage can start when towels are hung too near the stove. Frayed edges on a time-worn pair of hot pads or oven mitts can also catch fire. For the same reason, avoiding loose sleeves while cooking is always advised. Handles turned away from the edge should not force anyone cooking to place their hand over another burner. Microwave ovens, toasters, and electric grills need space around them to not only keep boxed foods and other items from burning, but to also prevent heat building up inside the appliance.

Storage areas

Garages and other places where dampness occurs might seem like an impossible place for a fire to start in stacks of newspapers or old magazines, but spontaneous combustion can happen if just the right chemical reaction takes place. These items also provide bedding for pests, and disposing them avoids many problems. Storing flammable liquids should only happen in well-labeled containers. When using gas-powered items like lawnmowers or chainsaws, you should let the motor cool down before refilling.

There are many ways in addition to these to help prevent problems that can cause fire damage or personal injury. When someone becomes injured, seek medical help immediately. When your home in Newport or near Greenville sustains fire damage, call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104. We're here, 24 hours each and every day of the year.

If Disaster Strikes Your Wilmington Home You Need To Call SERVPRO

As a restoration team that has been proudly serving Wilmington and the surrounding areas for nearly 30 years, we have learned from every project to become a prominent and respected name in the industry decades from when we first opened our doors. Our business has always had a family-feel, and that stems from multiple generations of the same family running operations. While we are an extension of a significant restoration brand in the country, we have never given up on our relationships and roots that have been the catalyst to our successes.

Water

Much of what makes our water recovery department such a talented group is both the commitment to achieving the highest levels of education and training available for this nice of the restoration industry and the commitment of our team to invest in the cutting-edge equipment, instruments, and technology that can help our Wilmington customers. Even aspects like our initial inspection of a water-damaged property can happen more efficiently and thoroughly with the use of advanced tools like our infrared imagery and hygrometers.

Areas where standing water can get found must get addressed before other mitigation practices can begin in these areas. Our SERVPRO team has multiple choices with extraction tools, this decision depending on the severity of water damage in Wilmington homes and the location of standing water that must get removed. Sump pumps offer continuous discharge and can run on portable power solutions that our team provides should utility services become compromised.

Something unique to our brand is our documentation and methods of monitoring the drying process in a Wilmington home. The same instruments that get used during the initial inspection can also help to determine the success of our drying efforts, but the milestones reached and overall progress get logged to our DryBook software.

Mold

Identifying mold growth in your Wilmington home might not be as easy as many might believe. Without a distinct, clear cause for this organism to seat and thrive, some homes in the area likely contend with colonies and have no idea that they exist. This spreading organism can emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) that can cause detrimental health effects to those in your family that could get exposed. The concentration of these VOCs worsens the closer that a property owner gets to active colonization.

Preventing mold growth might not be possible for specific residents, especially those who do not realize that damp and moist areas of their Wilmington home exist. Our SERVPRO Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) have the training and expertise to perform a thorough inspection of the suspected areas for the presence of moisture. We utilize the same discovery devices for water damage assessments to identify likely areas where mold colonization could exist.

Despite how stressful these situations can be, mold damage in Wilmington homes still often gets pushed off for a more convenient time. As a team with decades of experience in this niche of the industry, we aim to help homeowners overcome these colonies and their damaging effects before demolition and reconstruction is the only feasible remediation solution left.

Fire

Fire loss incidents can be some of the most destructive and varied disasters that our SERVPRO professionals ever face. Fire damage in Wilmington homes and businesses can be a layered threat, requiring stages of restoration and recovery efforts to carefully navigate the situation to prevent it from getting worse. Among the chief concerns when the team first arrives is the assessment process. If it is safe to do so, we can perform this walkthrough with both the customer and the insurance provider to ensure that everyone knows what the property needs to return to preloss condition.

Homes and businesses alike are at the mercy of the most efficient methods of fire suppression and extinguishment. While firefighters can often cause structural damage and water damage on their own, so can sprinkler systems installed in your Wilmington property. As prepared as our team can become to address effects like odors, soot, smoke residue, air quality threats, and other risks, our Water Restoration Technicians (WRT) can mobilize to these affected homes as well to oversee the drying and extraction of water-damaged areas of the house.

It is our job to get your home ready for the next step in recovery, and with fire damage in Wilmington homes, this often means preparing for painting and reconstruction. Our priority is making this process as simple as we can on the customer, regardless of the mitigation and restoration work required. We can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storm

We take it as a point of pride that we have the involvement we do in a large loss recovery team because this means that we can do more to help our Wilmington residents whenever disasters strike. In an area where severe weather can never stay ruled out, we contend with many of the destructive results of these events after the storm passes. Our disaster relief team is on call 24/7 with stocked trailers to address pressing threats like water damage and flooding.

We do not cut corners, and we seek to help anyone and everyone that needs us. That is why after some significant flooding situations and natural disasters, our SERVPRO team could take more than 24 hours to respond to the damage in your Wilmington home. Because of our focus on helping everyone who needs it, we can work as efficiently as possible to ensure that your property gets the attention and mitigation strategies it needs.

Because of our success in the realm of storm relief and flood recovery, we have been able to extend our services beyond our borders to help other states after natural disasters. To date, we have been to Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, and Illinois. This same focus to help out other franchises short-staffed after catastrophes are the same relationships we construct to help out our home when another ugly weather event targets our Wilmington streets.

The choice of professional restorers is a big one, and many select our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team for our central location and commitment that We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster. Give us a call today at (302) 992-0104.

Safe Cleaning & Rebuilding After Flood Damage to a Wilmington Home

10/17/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment on the floor in a room. Let SERVPRO show you the safe way to clean your Wilmington flood damage.

We know safety when it comes to your Wilmington home flood damage.

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States today, and homeowners near the Delaware River are familiar with the risks that living near bodies of water can present. However, it is just as important to be vigilant about the effects of flooding after cleanup: after all, this type of disaster creates an environment where microbes and bacteria can thrive.

If stormy weather or river swells cause flood damage in your Wilmington residence, certified SERVPRO technicians are prepared to come to your property at a moment's notice to mitigate damage and return your home to a clean, safe condition. Not only are these professionals available 24 hours a day, but they can also use sophisticated tools and equipment to sanitize your home after flooding occurs.

Floods can pose many risks to homeowners besides the development of mold. Floodwater often contains microbes, sewage, and other contaminants that can be unsafe for any resident. With this in mind, SERVPRO gets straight to work cleaning your home. Structures can be power washed as needed. Spaces in wall cavities and beneath floors and subfloors may need water removed with the aid of back-mounted or truck-mounted extractors, depending on the severity of the flood. Disinfection, a step often handled after drying in clean water disasters, must be done first in a flood situation. Sanitizing the area before drying it also prevents the spread of microbes and contaminants in the air.

Once items have been cleaned in your home, SERVPRO can use centrifugal air movers and industrial-grade dehumidifiers that kill microbes and odors. Porous items, like carpet and pad, must be disposed of at the discretion of supervisors and insurance adjusters to minimize risk to homeowners. After removing water, disinfecting and drying your home, SERVPRO can do more than recommend a professional for home restoration. This team possesses a general contractor license (#1992104829) and can work with you to restore your home even more extensively after flood cleanup.

SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere is dedicated to providing the community with service that leaves your home looking, "Like it never even happened." Call (302) 992-0104 today if you have a disaster that needs lightning-fast professional cleanup that begins within hours.

Some of the first actions the technicians take include tarping over broken windows and damaged roofing from hail or wind. This stops any additional water from entering the house until after the completion of the restoration services.

Mold Protection

Proactive measures against mold are necessary to inhibit growth. Airborne mold spores are almost always present both inside and outside the home, and exposure to temperatures over 70F-degrees causes spores to germinate. Technicians carefully monitor ambient warmth and humidity to ensure they are below sustainable levels for microbial life.

Protection Against Structural Damage

It may seem counterproductive to cut away sheetrock, but when it wicks water and weakens, often buckling or bowing in place on the wall, SERVPRO technicians use flood cuts to cleanly remove necessary sections of sheetrock in preparation for structural drying. Controlled demolition applied to delaminated tiles, and wet baseboards assist in the complete drying of flooring and within wall cavities or under cabinets.

Protect Against Odors

Water odors smell unpleasant and no one wants them in their home. Technicians have access to numerous applications for ways to cover up or neutralize water odors in the home from gel pellets that work on time release to machines such as hydroxyl generators that safely destroy odor molecules with UV rays.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 mitigates the loss to local properties from storms and flooding. The certified technicians handle all phases of the restoration services from cleanup to reconstruction under residential contractor license #1992104829 and make the damage to the home "Like it never even happened."

kitchen suffering smoke and fire damage “Like it never even happened.”

Reasons Why Wilmington Homes With Fire Damage Benefit From Professional Restoration Services

After fire damage, numerous secondary damages have the potential to occur. Homeowners should outsource the fire loss cleanup to ensure there are not costly issues to deal with after the fact.

Wilmington homes with fire damage often also have water damage from fire extinguishing efforts. SERVPRO technicians carefully scope the property to determine any areas water migrated into with their moisture detection equipment.

Complete Water Extraction
After locating any leftover water in the home, SERVPRO technicians use different kinds of professional extraction equipment to extract it. Fast action on this step of mitigation assists in increasing the potential for less loss due to water damage.

Protection Against Mold
Mold spores exist both outdoors and indoors, and when there is excessive moisture in a house and ambient temperatures over 70F-degrees, they can germinate within 24-hours and spread quickly. Along with thorough drying and frequent monitoring of the air quality during mitigation, SERVPRO technicians perform proactive applications to inhibit the growth of mold, so it is not an issue in the future as a result of the fire.

Using a Single Company for Everything
No doubt, dealing with fire loss in a home is one of the most devastating situations a homeowner's faces. SERVPRO has a general contractor license, and upon completion of the fire loss mitigation efforts, they have the expertise and experience also to complete any reconstruction necessary to restore the home to its preloss condition.

Odor Control
Before reconstruction occurs, SERVPRO technicians remove any remaining smoke odors from the residence. For light scents, they may use methods such as time-release gel pellets. Technicians often rely on equipment such as thermal fogging units or hydroxyl generators for the removal of heavily embedded scents.

Fire damage requires fast cleanup to limit loss and SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is ready to assist local property owners when needed. Call (302) 992-0104 and the emergency response team is available to come to your property 24/7 and make it “Like it never even happened.”

How Water Damage Affects Structural Materials in Your Wilmington Home

9/5/2019 (Permalink)

Work crew in front of SERVPRO truck Our team has the experience, expertise, and equipment to handle all of your water loss emergencies.

Precautions When Handling Materials after Water Damage Affects Your Wilmington Home

Spills and other water intrusion incidents can happen at any time. The general rule after such occurrence is to initiate mitigation steps as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration of materials and microbial growth. Safety is also an essential consideration to ensure injuries, or unnecessary damages do not occur in the process of restoring your Wilmington home to its preloss state.

Noting where the intrusion that causes water damage in your Wilmington home starts is crucial. If the water enters from above, such as when a torn roof allows rain into the structure or when an elevated supply pipe bursts, you can expect water in the ceiling and other cavities.  Such water causes the ceiling to sag and if not dealt with properly, can leave a hole in the ceiling panels. A straightforward solution our SERVPRO technicians use is drilling weep holes. We usually start with a first hole as close as possible to the joist then drill others towards the unsupported center of the panel. We drill one hole at a time, letting the water flow out through gravity and only drill another after the first one stops leaking.

As materials absorb water, it affects their structure. Materials such as particleboard might lose their natural strength, making it impossible to support the weight of people or machines. A machine or the person handling water removal might go right through the material if they rest their weight on it. SERVPRO technicians check the level of moisture absorbed into particleboard subflooring using moisture sensors and estimate its level of stability before placing heavy equipment on it.

Given enough dwell time, water can damage almost any material. Rust can eat away sturdy materials like metal while warping, buckling, and other physical distortions affect wood. Therefore, leaving any traces of water within the structure can have dire implications. Our SERVPRO technicians check for wetness in concealed sections using FLIR thermal cameras. We can also use moisture sensors with probes to confirm that materials dry correctly protecting your home from the effects of long-term water exposure.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere can help run the restoration process fast and safely. You can reach us at (302) 992-0104 any time. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Your Flood Damaged Home In Wilmington Can Be Restored By Our Experts

Sometimes The Best Outcome For Flood Damage In Wilmington Is Reconstruction

When intense storms bring flood damage to a home, a mere inch of groundwater brings devastation to both home and possessions. Water wicks quickly into sheetrock, and it buckles and warps quickly. When this happens, our practice is to remove the damaged building materials, and sometimes after extreme damage, the best outcome is prepping the property for reconstruction.

SERVPRO knows before any rebuilding or repairs from flood damage in a Wilmington home occur, the property must have the water extracted and thoroughly dried. Inspections for mold growth and odor control measures are vital as the rebuild of water loss areas cannot occur over mold or foul odors.

Why SERVPRO? We hold a residential and commercial contractor license, and we offer property owners the ability to utilize the services of a single company for both restoration and rebuilding. This takes the stress out of juggling multiple companies for cleanup and repair after a water loss. In preparation for rebuilding, we perform controlled demolition techniques and prepare the property with actions such as:

    •    Flood cuts to remove damaged sheetrock
    •    Removal of baseboards for cleaning and disinfection if unwarped
    •    Drilling weep holes in sheetrock for drainage as needed
    •    Cutting carpet and padding into strips for removal and disposal

Tracing paths of water migration and setting indoor humidity goals is an integral part of the drying process. Our technicians use measurements from unaffected areas of the residence or under fifty percent. We monitor the drying phase carefully and take measurements with our hygrometers to ensure the interior humidity levels are below optimum conditions for mold growth.

During the mitigation phase, we work closely with both the adjuster and the homeowner. We are careful to stay within the scope of coverage for both cleanup and reconstruction to ensure there are no surprise out-of-pocket expenses. Our experience is extensive having these General Contractor License, Residential Contractor License, and Commercial Contractor License. We always attempt to preserve and restore structural elements and contents rather than replace, keeping a keen eye out for our customers. When items have no restoration potential such as wet carpet and padding, we get approval from either the property owner or adjuster; we discard nothing without permission.

When flood damage happens, contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104. We have the resources and equipment to restore and rebuild your property to make the water loss “Like it never even happened.”

We Act Fast When We Arrive In Hockessin After A Flood

Heavy Rain Causes Flash Flood Damage to Hockessin Apartments

Extreme weather patterns expose multi-family residential complexes in Hockessin to flooding risks. Even just a few inches of water collecting on pavement acts like a river, delivering overland floodwaters into the main floor and lower levels of an adjacent townhouse development. If heavy rains saturate the ground around the building, those rushing waters join with seepage. As owner or manager of the residential complex, you have multiple tenants depending on you. We can help.

Flood Water Needs Containment

The water causing flood damage in Hockessin apartments is considered Category 3, the most contaminated. Flowing over pavement, gravel, dirt, and grass, it picks up many landscaping and road maintenance chemicals. Organic debris joins in the mix, which can also contain sewage if the storm drains are overwhelmed. As we plan for flood water removal safety, regulations require we collect and contain the fluids for disposal as hazardous waste.

Powerful Professional Pumps and Extractors

When the SERVPRO team arrives, a quick assessment leads to the immediate implementation of a flood damage remediation plan. Our trucks stock multiple pumps and water extractors, put to work to remove as much liquid water as possible. We use thermal imaging technology to locate any hidden water. If necessary, controlled demolition techniques like flood cuts or weep holes release the water for containment. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training mastered by our managers and technicians stresses accurate moisture measurement as the baseline for structural drying. With all visible water captured and on its way to appropriate disposal sites, we develop drying goals.

Monitored Drying Prevents Secondary Damage

We compare the moisture levels of water-damaged structures with those of similar building materials in unaffected areas of the townhome development. SERVPRO Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians use the two sets of data when laying out a perimeter of heated air movers to accelerate evaporation. Excess moisture must exit the wet structure for capture and disposal by our evaporative or desiccant dehumidifiers. Over-drying is not appropriate, so we keep a close eye on periodic moisture meter samplings.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere has the equipment and highly-skilled work team you can depend on to return your residential complex to pre-flood condition. Call us at (302) 992-0104 when rain showers turn into tributaries that flood your real estate investment.

Water Damage from Sprinklers in Yards

Broken Sprinkler Head Causing Water Damage

Outdoor Sprinkler Systems and Water Damage

Most people think of water damage coming from storms or flood or broken pipes and toilets, but if you have an automatic outdoor garden and yard sprinkler system that you hardly ever think about, it’s time to think about them once more! You should check your outdoor sprinkler system at least once per year.

Underground leaks due to broken equipment allows water to leak out of the system. Excessive watering could lead to runoff, which could come back to you dwelling and cause underground and structural damage.

You should check your sprinkler heads, main & lateral lines and valve box on a regular basis. Misaligned and tilted heads as well as blocked heads can cause underground water issues.

Checking these simple equipment issues can help with any future damages to your structure and personal property.

If you have an issue and water gets into your home, SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere is here to help. 302 992 0104

Dry Cleaning Smoke-Damaged Clothing In Wilmington Homes

Fire recovery is an involved process, even when the fire itself is not widespread or structurally compromising to your Wilmington property. Often homeowners want to do what they can to improve the way their home looks and smells after a small flare-up. Odor removal can be a complicated obstacle to overcome, but there are some practices that you can expect from professional restorers in your house. The more you understand about these approaches, the more you can trust the process and help to get your home to preloss condition as promptly as possible.

While fire damage in Wilmington homes requires multiple machines, products, and practices to overcome, deodorization is a priority to making fire loss “Like it never even happened.” Our SERVPRO professionals have invested substantial time in training and money in our inventory of recovery tools to provide our customers with the ideal approach for eliminating harsh smoke odors every time. As leaders in restoration, we are happy to share some approaches that can protect your clothes when you do not feel you need the full measure of professional recovery service.

Dry-cleaning is always a great option because many of these locations use oxidation or ozone to remove odors at a molecular level. This cleaning process is often gentler on your clothes as well, reducing the possibility of irreparable damages from excessive scrubbing when particulates on the fabric set into the material. With many of these clothing items enduring excessive smoke exposure, dry-cleaning is often the ideal approach. Even our SERVPRO team has dry-cleaning equipment for fabrics for this reason.

Depending on the damage, you can also potentially protect and recover your clothes on your own as well. This process involves spraying these damaged fabrics thoroughly with a vinegar and water solution. While the items are still damp, put them into your washing machine along with a cup of vinegar and a cup of baking soda. Before you put them in the dryer, run them through the washing machine a second time with your regular detergent of choice.

You might still encounter smoke smells throughout your house, and often these do not go away on their own. We have sophisticated tools and practices to address odor removal in materials and open areas of your property. Give our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere fire restoration specialists a call anytime at (302) 992-0104.

SERVPRO--The Tried and True Mold Remediator for Wilmington Properties

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO for Mold Remediation in Wilmington? Professionals Looking Out for You!

Why Wilmington Residents Trust SERVPRO to Perform Assessment and Remediation of Mold Damage

Residents of Wilmington choose us to assist them with mold remediation and assessment because they know we provide highly trained, certified technicians from the local area. Expenses from microbial growth issues can quickly spiral out of the homeowner's control with many services advocating for laboratory tests or other time-consuming procedures. Our well-earned reputation is based on trust in this community while our access to national-scale resources ensures that we can mobilize advanced remediation equipment to perform an efficient treatment from start to finish.

Mold Damage and Restore vs. Replace

The visible signs of mold damage in your Wilmington home are enough to justify bringing in a claim for the assessment and remediation of mold. Our technicians are certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC,) a nationally recognized body for restoration services. We then expand that training for our technicians in the practical application to private residences and commercial properties. Usually, our focus is on reducing the expense of your claim by restoring rather than replacing possessions and conducting a time-efficient service.

Assessment and circumstances dictate the remediation process

The last thing you want as a homeowner is to spend significant time and effort on property damages. We arrive promptly to assess the extent of the damage. We may need to remove obstacles from the property to gain a more precise assessment. Possessions that show signs of mold infestation can be earmarked for external storage or cleaned onsite depending on what your SERVPRO technician believes to be the most effective solution. Valuable fabrics can be cleaned using Esporta washing machines to remove 99% of soilings before being returned to your home.

Moisture and Humidity are Friends of Mold Infestations

Removing mold colonies is an integral part of our job, but more important is to ensure that the mold does not return after our service is complete. Mold spores proliferate in warm, humid conditions. Our technicians can lower the relative humidity (RH) of the affected area as well as using thermal imaging cameras to find moisture pockets that could be the cause of microbial issues. By taking a dedicated approach to finding the source, SERVPRO reduces the likelihood of mold growth recurring and becoming a lasting problem.

When you notice mold in your home, you need to use a provider you can trust to remediate the issue. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104.

We Act Fast To Limit More Damage To Your Wilmington Home

7/26/2019 (Permalink)

We handle pack outs when water damage causes large amounts of furniture and items in the home to be unsalvaged.

How Fast Water Removal Lessens Damage in Wilmington Homes

Whether it is a little or a lot, water damage leaves its mark in a structure. The most common areas requiring water cleanup in a home are the kitchen and bathroom. However, anywhere there are plumbing pipes or appliances connected to supply lines, the potential for a water spill exists.

When SERVPRO works on water removal in a Wilmington property, we spend extra time on the water extraction phase. The reason for this is because the more passes we do with our equipment reduces the amount of time needed to dry the property.

Our professional-grade water extraction equipment gives SERVPRO the edge among restoration services. We standardly use many of the following:
Portable pumps for quick, mobile extraction
Submersible pumps for situations when water is more than two inches deep
Weighted extractors for pushing water out of carpet and padding
Rovers are ride-on units that extract water using the weight of the technician

Different factors denote the restorability element of items affected in water damage. If more than 48-hours has passed since carpeting and other porous household items became exposed to water without mitigation, it requires treatment as a category three biohazard and increases the potential having to replace things and thereby incurring additional costs. That is why the faster homeowners call and get extraction efforts underway, the chances for saving both furnishings and possessions from being counted as a water loss increase.

If our technicians do any controlled demolition during mitigation, such as flood cuts for ruined sheetrock or weep holes drilled in ceilings or walls, our SERVPRO carries a General Contractor License #1992104829 and we have the skills to not only perform the needed restoration service but also offer homeowners reconstruction for their homes as is necessary to return it to its preloss condition.

When you need water removal, contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104. Our certified technicians are available 24/7 to restore your property and make your water loss "Like it never even happened."

No More Mistakes With Mold Damage Remediation in Wilmington

7/16/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can occur in the most unreachable places. Contact the mold remediation professionals at SERVPRO today for help.

Why SERVPRO Wilmington Provides Effective Professional Mold Damage Remediation

When you first notice signs of a mold infestation in Wilmington, chances are good some self-help might be your first choice. Unfortunately, mold often does not respond as expected to conventional cleaning methods because is it not typical household soiling. Introducing the moisture mold needs to grow during cleaning can make a mold problem even worse. Our mold remediation managers and technicians follow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocols, which is why we deliver successful outcomes.

Mold damage in your Wilmington home does not need to cause panic, even if you feel as though you tried everything and failed. When we follow the proper procedures, mold growth, and the damage it inflicts on structural components, abates.

The SERVPRO mold remediation team locates, contains, and removes the active mold colonies. Containment methods include plastic barriers sealing off the work area and often a negative pressure air scrubbing system to force and capture contaminants through HEPA filters before venting to the outdoors. Our technicians wear personal protective gear to prevent tracking moldy residues into unaffected areas.

On solid surfaces, SERVPRO employees use mechanical means to remove the mold, including brushes and scrapers. Soda blasting is a gentle but effective way to rid some porous building materials of mold damage. We vacuum and wipe up debris in the workspace, bagging them for hazardous waste disposal following local regulations. The now-cleared area receives treatment with an EPA-registered antimicrobial agent. Coatings containing fungicides can prepare affected surfaces for further restoration efforts while at the same time inhibiting mold regrowth.

We follow up by recommending you eliminate the source of moisture that fueled the microbial growth initially and helping with repairs. Mold spores are always in the environment, both indoors and out. They cause little harm when dry, but if water is available for as few as 24 to 48 hours, the moisture can cause spores to begin multiplying, damaging organic surfaces in your home and creating an airborne irritant to susceptible individuals allergic to mold or its toxins.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is ready to help abate active mold infestations and address the moisture sources that caused them. Call (302) 992-0104 to schedule a remediation assessment.

How to Dry Your Water Damaged Wilmington Basement

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Did your basement unexpectedly become an indoor pool? Call SERVPRO for fast and effective remediation.

Flood Extraction in Your Wilmington Basement

Flooding, even from breaches caused by storm damages to your Wilmington home, can find its way to the lowest levels and collect in your basement. The most common pathway for pooling water in this subterranean floor is through a deteriorating block wall, where water can find penetration points and reach the interior. Even with a drain system and graded concrete floors, flooding through these vulnerabilities could become devastating for your property. To counteract these effects, you need a fast response by competent professionals like our restoration team.

The faster that you can secure qualified professionals to address flood damage in your Wilmington home, the less detrimental these pooling effects can become. Our SERVPRO professionals have comprehensive training and experience gained through certification coursework designed by the standard-setting Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to become Water Restoration Technicians (WRT), many of which also have additional endorsements in Applied Structural Drying (ASD.) Our team can quickly assess the severity of the situation and develop an effective plan to mitigate and restore these conditions.

Flood recovery hinges significantly on finding the vulnerabilities and penetration points that allowed the emergency to occur in the first place. For your basement, this often means learning where block breaches exist, and earmarking these for full replacement or using more immediate strategies like hydraulic cement to prevent further infiltration.

Extraction is a critical component of this flood recovery as well, and our SERVPRO team has a broad inventory of water removal equipment to address every severity we might encounter. From our wet-vacs and extraction wands to our engine-driven, gas-powered trash pumps, we can offer an effective removal strategy for every scenario involving standing water and oversaturation. We even have truck-mount options in our Green Fleet to provide an even more powerful solution when conditions are dire.

Recovery after a flood loss can feel overwhelming for homeowners, but our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team can help. We have a wide range of sophisticated tools and machines that can quickly remove standing water and work to make these damaging disasters “Like it never even happened.” Give our professionals a call 24/7 at (302) 992-0104.

A peek of some of our products

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere has trained, professionals in different aspects of our services. Water damage remediation is one of our specialties.  We have quite an array of products that we use in our water restoration.  One of our favorite products is bio-based. Here are some reasons why: Bio-based testing is used to confirm whether products sold as "botanical" contain synthetic compounds (derived from petroleum) that are not specified on the label. All living things contain carbon, which can be dated to identify the age of the ingredient and if it is from petroleum or plant sources.  The term "old" carbon is from petroleum while "young" carbon is plant based. This product we use is tested at 100% bio-based.  That is simply wonderful that SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is able to use an authentic Botanical product.

Working Fire Alarms Save Lives

Working Fire Alarm

Smoke alarms save lives. There are many smoke alarms you can have in your home or business. It is easy to take smoke alarms for granted if you have some already in your property. Protecting what matters most, your life and your property, should make you stop and think about the last time you had yours serviced or replaced. There are many types and brands available on the market today. Most smoke alarms run on batteries. Have you changed your batteries lately? It is up to you to make sure they are working batteries. Perhaps making it an annual “to-do” item may help resolve this. Some smoke alarms are hardwired into the electrical system of your home or business. These fire alarms have different features you can utilize. Just because you may have hard wired fire alarms, you may still need to change those batteries as well. Again, setting up reminders to complete this task is a good thing to do. Help keep your family and property protected by keeping working fire alarms.

Efflorescence

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

Results were perfect.

Efflorescence, something that many of us come across but may not be sure of what it is. It’s a crystalline deposit of salts than can be seen on floors, or walls or other surfaces made of concrete or stucco, or brick and stone. This is commonly found in basements, but can be seen in other areas as well. Here is a recent example that SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere, Delaware found on an outdoor water wall where the salt and water found in the grout and cinderblocks behind the glass tiles created the efflorescence found in picture.

The way SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere handled this was to use a dry brush and a diluted solution of muriatic acid as to not damage the glass tiles. The homeowner was made aware that this will be an on-going solution, but not a cure. Very happy homeowners!

Some Fire Prevention Tips

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

Clear Stove Top

When one thinks of fire it may remind them of destruction and loss. It may be hard to think what we can do to prevent fires however, in some cases we may be able to prevent some. Accidents happen. That is why they are simply called accidents. A bit of common sense can aid help us. Some examples would be: such as not leaving candles lit, forgetting about them or placing them near something too close, leaving food or containers on the stove while walking away, plugging in too many cords into the same receptacle, cooking barbecue too close to the house or trying to light it with gasoline. Simple precautions and thinking ahead before we do something are good rules of thumb. If you see something that you think could cause a problem fix it or get rid of it. Those of us who are old enough to remember, there use to be a little TV cartoon, Smoky The Bear. The cartoon told of how you can help prevent forest fires. We can use the same mantra when it comes to helping prevent housefires. Be careful, think what you are doing and hopefully, prayerfully, you never will have an event that causes destruction of property damage or even perhaps personal injury.

Preventing Dryer Fire With Maintenance

Preventing Dryer Fire With Maintenance

Dryer Fires are common all year round and simple cleaning maintenance can help prevent them. Keeping your dryer vents clear and free from lint plays an important part in fire prevention. Did you know lint is extremely flammable? People keep lint from there lint screens and keep it in bags so they can later use it to start fires in fireplaces, outdoor fire pits and campfires. This is a wonderful technique, especially for outdoor fire building. However; since it is extremely flammable, keeping it in your dryer can cause problems. Lint build up can become hot and ignite a fire. Keeping your lint screens clear and having a cleaning on dryer vents will help. Some people do not want to call upon SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere to have their dryer vents cleaned because there is a cost associated with this. In the long run simple maintenance out weighs the risks.

Soot on a Clock

Soot on a Clock

Soot and smoke clean up can be a tedious task. Soot is very invasive and penetrates a lot of nooks and crannies of a home. When the smoke goes into all these cavities it causes odors. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere specializes in accurately assessing the extent of damage and helps develop a comprehensive plan of action. Each smoke and soot damage situation are different therefore requiring different techniques. Depending on what caused the fire from what actually burned or melted in the fire makes a difference. There are different types of smoke that will play a factor in determining which cleaning method is best to do. Wet Smoke, mostly from plastic and rubber will differ from Dry Smoke, mostly paper and wood and they both will differ from Protein Smoke. Since every situation is different calling upon a specialist and trained company such as SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere can help restore your property properly.

Commercial Properties

Crew Waiting On Approval

Commercial Properties can sustain considerable amounts of water damage through a weekend. If is often times a business will close on a Friday and no one will enter or check the property over a weekend or the extended weekend. When Monday evening came for this business owner he did not know how it happened. In this scenario, a toilet was flushed at the end of the day, on the previous Friday, and the back of the tank never quit running. This meant the water kept coming and flowing into the bathroom, through the bathroom into the hallways and into the offices. This is a picture of our crew waiting approval from the crew chief on the scope of the work. The SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team is ready to go and just waiting on the sign off.

State of Art Washing Machine

This is a picture of behind the machine with the products going into it.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere has a commercial Esporta Washing Machine on our premises. This machine is located in its own area of our shop. The machine we have comes to us from Canada. This industrial washing machine has four chambers and is bolted to the floor. The Esporta wash system is a powerful, industry changing technological leap forward. The state-of-the-art machine has an iPad attached to it that gets the data entered into it that generates reports. This is extremely helpful when organizing full home cleanings. Esporta has documented 3rd party laboratory validation demonstrating the system consistently delivers 90% of soft contents back to “food grade clean”. Traditional washing technology recovers less than 40%. When we run the machine, we have had customers and neighbors’ comment on the pleasant aroma it puts out.

Mold is Everywhere

Mold is Everywhere

Mold is everywhere among us. “The Fungus Among Us” is a saying we use here at SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere. There are certain types of mold outside in the air we breathe. Indoor Air Quality differs from outdoor air quality. There is no way to eliminate all mold spores in the environment but controlling the growth is pertinent. During a flood cleanup it is important to properly dry the area in order to prevent further problems. Failure to properly mitigate the loss can cause secondary issues and present health risks associated with mold. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is properly trained and can help rid your home or business with these microorganisms. SERVPRO uses proper techniques and products to do the job correctly. Call SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere for an individualized mold estimate.

Dishwasher Damage

Dishwasher Damage

Mold can sneaky and hidden until it gets noticed. In this case, there was a dishwasher that had a small leak for a period of time. The small leak went undetected as it was a slow drip. The floor under the dishwasher was getting destroyed by mold. It was only when the kids playing in the basement saw an area on the ceiling that looked “funny”. The homeowner went to check it out and saw what appeared to “leopard spots” on the ceiling. She touched the ceiling and it felt dry to the touch. Thankfully this homeowner did not cut the ceiling or tamper with the area much. When SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere arrived, we were able to determine that the spot was below the dishwasher. When we pulled the dishwasher out this is what we found.

It's a dirty job - but SERVPRO can do it!

It's a dirty job - but SERVPRO can do it!

Storms with tremendous amounts of rain with a long duration can cause an array of issues. One thing that may happen is the water table remains high and there is nowhere for the water to go. The water table simply is when water seeps into the ground and moves downward into the ground until it is no longer permeable. When the ground cannot any longer hold water, it means it is saturated. The upper surface of the zone of saturation is called the water table. When this happens, the water has to go somewhere. Sometimes it can back up sewer systems and cause the water to back flow into homes and buildings. It can be an awful experience as the sewage is just not from your home but from the street’s as well. The raw sewage and odor are very unpleasant. This picture is an example of this situation described above. It is dirty job but SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere can do it.

Keeping a video of your Business

11/6/2018 (Permalink)

Having an insurance loss in a commercial business can be overwhelming. Having helped businesses experience such tragedies through the many years has taught me quite a few things. I believe if you were to take a video of your property, inside and out, at least once a year, before an event were to occur, it would be extremely helpful for you and your insurance company. The video can be kept and stored in a safe place. Perhaps consider a copy offsite and having a copy of it in two different places at the business. Make copies of important documents such as deeds and important papers. Keep a copy off site as well. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere cares about your business and we are here to help.

Tree through Window During Windy Storm

Tree Through Window During a Wind Storm

Storms not only have to come in the form of flooding and heavy rains to seriously affect your home. Storms can come in the form of high winds ripping off roofs that can cause damage. High winds can also knock down power lines causing power to go out. Power lines can also get ripped down that may cause a surge within your home and cause a fire. Here is a photo of a house where a tree branch went through a window. You can see the glass all over the floor and parts of the tree branches within the glass. The home sustained broken windows, minor clean up and content damage and some wall painting and repair. Luckily the homeowner and his pet were out of harms way and were safe. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere was happy to help.

Mold on Wall

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Mold on Wall

Mold can be hidden for some time until it gets noticed. Sometimes a person is unaware that water infiltrated their home at one point. Sometimes people try to dry the water damage themselves. Later, an odor can be detected and that should be a telltale sign that something is happening. If the area is left untreated a more serious problem may come to fruition. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere gets calls frequently from homeowners that they thought they previously had a small water damage that they corrected themselves. Now that time has gone by there is an odor present and they are worried about microbial growth. This is very common for homeowners to experience. In this photo you can see mold growing through the drywall after the homeowner experienced a small amount of water a few months back and never did anything about it.

Fire Prevention

10/29/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Extinguisher

Fire Prevention Week is in the month of October. During this month we want to help you think of ways and inspire you to increase safety of fire in your home. Every year, the majority of fire deaths in North America happen at home. Plan an escape if your home were to catch fire. Home fire escape planning and drills are an essential part of fire planning and safety. A fire escape has to be planed and practiced in order for it to be a developed escape. Consider the following: properly working and installed fire alarms, all possible exits from every room (Doors and windows), a meeting place outside the home to meet after the exit and know how to dial 911. Another way to think of fire safety is during cooking. Remember to stay in the kitchen while you are cooking. Keep flammables away from your stovetop and have an up- to-date fire extinguisher near your kitchen if an emergency were to happen. These are just some ways to think of fire safety in your home.

Disasters Happen, Prepare Now

Consider creating an emergency plan that includes getting emergency alerts through your cell phone or home phone. Make plans for shelter, evacuation and communication methods with the family. Have someone in your family learn some life saving skills. CPR would be an example of that.  Know how to turn of the utilities in your home. Make sure your insurance coverage is sufficient and to date.

It is important to take the time for both your family and/or your business and create a short-term plan to deal with the possible unexpected. You will be able to respond better and quicker if you have a plan in place. Having key information at your fingertips after an emergency is an easier path to recovery quicker and with less stress.

-People can develop different types of symptoms when they are exposed to mold, such as: allergic reactions, asthmas and other respiratory issues.
-There is truly no way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in an indoor environment, best thing to do is to control moisture.
-If you do notice mold or begin to develop symptoms you think may be related to mold it is always good to call a professional and eliminate any sources of moisture.
-Always fix the source of any water problem or leak to prevent any mold from growing.
-Reduce the humidity levels indoors (30-60%) to decrease growth—always make sure bathrooms, dryers and other moisture generating sources have clear access to the outside. Try using air conditioners and de-humidifiers whenever possible. Try increasing ventilation. Using exhaust fans when cooking and cleaning can make a big difference.
-Keep clean and dry any damp or wet materials or furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent growth.
-To clean off mold on hard surfaces use water and detergent and dry completely. Materials that may absorb moisture, like ceiling tiles, that are moldy, should be replaced.

Review your Insurance Policy

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

Review your Insurance Policy

When one thinks of a water damage incident they may not think of it in a context of their own home, if they even think about it at all. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere sees water damages happen every day and at different times of the day. Reviewing or speaking with your homeowner’s insurance company or agent can be helpful. An extension of that would be to read your policy in detail and ask your agent to go over or explain some of its content. Sewer back up if an often over looked item in policies. If you are a renter and not a homeowner you should still have a contents insurance policy. Learn where the water shut off valve is in your home. Knowing where that is can be helpful in the event of an emergency.

Storm Information

SERVPRO rain gauge

In the past few days our area has and still is experiencing quite an amount of rainfall. We took a look at our water meter and WHOA! Our Newport area has received so much water. The water comes down so fast in such a short period of time. Due to areas being dry this time of year, a lot of water absorbed in the ground. There are some areas though that are in the lower elevation parts and are receiving a lot water intrusion.  When following the weather you can prepare somewhat by making sure all your sump pumps are properly functioning. During the weather event you should sporadically monitor your basement and or crawlspace.  Preparing is essential because you can possibly correct an issue to prevent damage before it happens.  Monitoring is important too because you can be on top of what is occurring in your home.

Spring Can Not Come Soon Enough

Storm Devastation

Major snow and high winds event that occurred at the very beginning of March caught everyone off guard. With temperatures in February reaching almost 70 degrees on a couple days, no one would have ever imagined the devastation to come. After over 24 hours of high winds reaching over 50 mph this customers’ home was left almost unlivable. The large tree that fell destroyed a car and left a huge hole in the roof. Our SERVPRO ofHockessin/Elsmere crew was called by the customers’ insurance company and we were out within the hour. We were able to place a tarp on the roof to cover the large holes insuring that no further damage would occur until the roof could get fully repaired. The homeowner was amazed at what SERVPRO was capable of doing. We are always here to help, and committed to our community.

September is National Preparedness Month

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

September is National Preparedness Month. This annual event, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides families and businesses with the information and resources they need to plan for, react to, survive, and recover from an emergency, before the emergency happens. (https://www.ready.gov/september) For National Preparedness Month 2018, themed “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how,” FEMA has prepared a week-by-week calendar of recommended actions property owners can take to be ready if disaster does strike: Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication. Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working. Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track. Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location. “There’s a difference between surviving a disaster and recovering from a disaster.” “Families and businesses who take the time to create both a short- and long-term plan to deal with the unexpected are better able to respond quickly if the unexpected happens, which can improve their chances of survival. Having key information at their fingertips in the aftermath of the emergency can set them on the path to recovery more quickly and with less stress.” Because SERVPRO recognizes a fast response is critical in any emergency, reminds -area commercial and residential property owners they can download the SERVPRO READY app for free at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app allows users to store essential contact and property information electronically, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds, right from the scene, if disaster strikes. For local business owners who designate SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of their facility, help the owner complete a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP), and store that profile in the READY app. “SERVPRO disaster cleanup and restoration specialists are ready to respond to emergencies big and small.” From SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team, a group of elite large-loss specialists, prequalified and strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle any size disaster, to local SERVPRO professionals like SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere, we specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping make it ‘Like it never even happened.’ for both commercial and residential customers.”

Did You Know There are 3 Water Category's When it Comes to Restoration?

8/14/2018 (Permalink)

Manuals and Study Guides

IICRC S500 Standard Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage defines 3 categories of water. Category refers to the type of water affecting the structure.

A Category I loss is where water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion or inhalation exposure. An example would be a water cooler.

A Category II loss is when water contains a significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed/ingested by humans. Category II water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms. Some examples of a Category II Water are: Discharge from dishwashers, overflow from washing machines, overflow from toilet bowls.

Category III water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed. Examples of Category III Water are: Sewage, Flood water, hurricanes etc.

Water Heater Leak

Hot Water Heater Gives Way

This business had what they thought was a small water heater leak. An employee noticed a small leak on a Friday evening in the basement of a restaurant. The employee did not want to bother the owner as it was late and they thought it was just a tiny drip.  The employee put a few towels around the area and left a note for the manager on Monday.  The water heater's drip got more intense over the weekend. The water heater eventually gave way and water poured into the area all weekend long.  SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere was able to help this customer overcome this issue.  We were able to pump out the water and treat the affected area.  Since the area was in the basement running our equipment was not a nuisance to the establishment.

Flooded Commercial Property

Flooding on the Floor

SERVPRO of Hockessin worked on a water damage that suffered a large amount of water. The water ran throughout the night.  A water main burst in the bathroom area and saturated the second floor of the building. The water also ran down through the ceilings and pipe chases to the first floor as well.  The property owner was away and an on-call maintenance person called us in to help the with the clean up.  We were able to come in and help them get back to business in four days! The main areas dried quickly due to the tiled areas.  The pipe chases were easily dried too due to our specialty equipment.  The wall cavities were dried out rather quickly too.  When the owner returned he was amazed at what the place looked like.

Clear Your Gutters. After the fall season and then the wintery weather, your gutters probably could use a little attention. Clear out anything in your gutters to prevent mold or weeds growing up there.

Change Filters. HVAC filters should be checked/changed seasonally in order to ensure proper air quality in your home.

Fire Extinguisher

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

This photo shows the damage that not only a fire can do, but also the damage that a fire extinguisher can do. Even if someone used a fire extinguisher and contained or put out a fire, there can still be a strong odor and chemicals that need to be removed from the building/home.

The chemicals from a fire extinguisher can coat a room quickly and leave a thick dust behind. Normally this extinguisher dusting comes along with a coat of soot. Even if a fire has been small and quickly put out, the smell and chemicals left behind should be properly cleaned out of the space. You can see in the photo how apparent the soot and extinguisher's affects are. This is just one corner of the room, but this entire living room was impacted.

Winterize Your Vehicle

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO truck ready for the winter weather.

Preparing for extreme cold weather is not only important for your home but also your car. Your vehicle functions in rain, snow, ice, hail, salted roads, and freezing temperatures. It is important to make sure your vehicle is properly equipped to handle all of the winter weather elements.

Before the winter weather has begun, you should have your car checked by a mechanic for antifreeze, brakes, tires, windshield wipers, heater, defroster, etc. While using your car throughout the winter, it is best to keep your gas tank at least half full. Salting and sanding your driveway or road is helpful for minimizing ice and increasing traction.

An emergency kit for your car is essential when preparing for the winter's extreme weather. Your vehicles emergency kit should include the following:

  • Jumper Cables
  • Ice Scraper
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Car cellphone charger
  • Sand for better traction
  • Extra Blanket

After a Storm

1/4/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO on the scene after a large storm.

  • Make contact with family and friends in the affected area and let those that you know outside of the affected area that you are safe.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe. Attempting to re-enter the area can be dangerous and it is important to wait until the area has been cleared as safe by officials.
  • Avoid areas with debris and downed power lines.
  • Avoid flood waters, whether on foot or in vehicle. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down, and one foot of fast-moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Take note of any damage to your belongings or to your property
  • Photograph any damage to your belongings/property for insurance purposes
  • Tarp or board up damaged roofs and windows to prevent further damage. Your insurance may not cover additional damage that occurs after the storm has passed.

Make A Flood Plan

1/3/2018 (Permalink)

Household Flooding

It is important to know what you and your family's plan will be in the case of a flood or any other emergency. Familiarizing yourself with your local emergency contacts and community emergency plans may not feel like a pressing matter, but in the case of a flood/emergency it is valuable knowledge. It is important that all family members are aware of their address, family phone numbers, important medical information, and even email addresses. Other important information to remind family members of includes:

  • Emergency hotlines
  • School/work phone numbers & addresses
  • Childcare phone numbers & addresses
  • Personal emergency contacts & addresses
  • Indoor meeting places
  • Neighborhood meeting places
  • Out-of-Neighborhood meeting places

It is also important to have easy access to contact information of:

  • Police
  • Fire
  • Poison Control
  • Doctor
  • Pediatrician
  • Medical Insurance
  • Policy #
  • Hospital

Winter House Fire

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO technicians surveying the property

Recently our SERVPRO technicians were called out to a property after a large fire. Along with the home owners, our team surveyed the house and the damage to what was left. In this photo, our technicians stand inside the home with the front yard totally visible through the burnt walls. The home was considered a total loss and there was not much left within the property for our team to clean or assist with. As SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere, we did our best to lend a helping hand to the family in any way that we could especially since this trauma occurred right before the holidays. We assisted them in their move to a temporary living space and checked in with them often to make sure they were okay.

Christmas Party During a Snow Storm!

12/19/2017 (Permalink)

Christmas Party in the Snow

SERVPRO's 2017 Christmas party was a hit! The colder weather brings on a busy amount of business for our SERVPRO team. With such hectic and long  hours, we were happy to be able to find the time to fit in a great Christmas party this year. Our holiday party just happened to be thrown on our first big snow storm of the winter.

Here is a photo captured early on in this snow storm and in the Christmas party. Such stormy weather ended up being the perfect opportunity for a bonfire, a few snow ball fights, and some holiday fun! Earlier that day we had delivered cookies and pretzels to a few offices around the Hockessin/Elsmere area. We are happy to spread the holiday spirit and what better way than in the snow!

Before Board Up

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damaged Room

This picture was taken right before our SERVPRO team cleaned out and boarded up this house. As you can see, there was a major house fire here that affected almost every single room with either fire or soot damage. The fire originated in the kitchen and spread into the dining room, living room, and then to the bedrooms. Luckily, even with the large size of the fire, the structure remained intact and our technicians were able to save and clean some of the contents. Once our team was sure the structure was secure, they started on the demo of the home, removing all soot and fire damaged sections. After the home was rebuilt and brought back to livable conditions, SERVPRO moved the family's cleaned contents back in for them.

SERVPRO Gearing Up for Wrestling Season

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Growth Under Wrestling Mats

This year, one of our local school was gearing up for the wrestling season when they came across a problem. When pulling up their wrestling mats for cleaning before they would be put in place for the season, they found some mold growth in various spots and a lot of moisture. When our SERVPRO technicians assessed the mats and the conditions of the floors below them, they found many patches of moisture and mold growth. The mats had to be taken up and cleaned separately while they removed the mold. We mitigated the mold and dried the floor and the mats before they were put back in their place. Now that SERVPRO has taken care of it, the school is ready to start their wrestling season training.

Getting Ready for the School Year

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO team in the schools

SERVPRO was able to help three schools get ready for the school year after a major storm all at once.  Schools were closed for the summer time and they wanted them back up in tip top shape so that everyone would be starting the school year in clean healthy conditions.  Some of the schools had little time and strict constraints in order to obtain the desired results!  It was quite a time crunch but our SERVPRO technicians came to the rescue and the challenge was met! These three schools opened on time and with a staff that was extremely pleased with our team. We felt a strong sense of responsibility to not only the school, but the students and administration who would be spending the school year in those buildings.

Conference Room Damage

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

Conference room.

This photo shows a large conference room located in a high rise building that has been flooded due to a large pipe line that burst. Unfortunately there were many rooms that looked like this one. This large building was affected on multiple floors and there were many offices that were scared their businesses would be greatly affected by the water damage. Luckily, our technicians were on the scene early that morning, once the call came in. They met with all the office managers and all those who had important belongings in the office building to assure them they would be taken care of. Once all those in the building were put at ease, SERVPRO started the restoration and cleanup process. We were proud to have helped so many different businesses get through such a stressful time.

Time to Clean Your Refrigerator

11/22/2017 (Permalink)

When was the last time that you found something in your fridge that was expired or needed to be thrown out? It is fairly common to find some perishable and/or questionable items in the back of your fridge that have been hidden behind some condiments or left overs for too long.

Once a week, your refrigerator should be tidied up by wiping spills and surfaces. Any sticky spots on containers should be wiped up as well. To prevent bacteria growth, the fridge should be cleared out, thoroughly cleaned, and organized. Products should be checked for expiration dates and mold before going back in the refrigerator.

It is important to keep your fridge clean and organized so that your items can remain bacteria and mold free!

Ready to Move Back In!

11/22/2017 (Permalink)

A recent storm in the Elsmere area took out some of a household's roof and siding. The brutal storm opened up the home to the rain and winds, which then damaged much of this families belongings inside the house. SERVPRO came in and removed all the damaged contents from the home and dried the water damaged areas of the structure. We detail cleaned all the items that were salvageable from the home and stored them for the homeowners. We even use our own storage units to ensure the security of the household's belongings and keep them under our care throughout the whole rebuilding process. Now that the home is completely restored and in livable condition, we have packaged up all of their contents and are delivering them back to the house.

Windy Storm

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

A storm does not need to come in only the form of rain and flooding to seriously affect your home. Here is a photo of the flooring that had to be ripped up from a home after an extremely windy storm. Strong winds caused a tree branch to come down and puncture the siding to the house. Later that night, it started to rain heavily and eventually flooded the first floor, ruining a large section of the hardwood floors. Along with some belongings wrapped up in black plastic bags, you can see the amount of floor panels that had to be removed before we started our drying process throughout the home. Luckily this storm only affected a portion of the home rather than the entire property.

The Colder Months are Coming

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

The colder months of the year are coming and for those who have a working fire place in their home, it's important to know the how to operate it safely. Before anything else, you should make sure that your fire extinguisher is accessible and that it works correctly. You should also check you smoke detector and your carbon monoxide detector. The fireplace should be clear of anything around it that could catch fire. You should give the fireplace a range of three feet around it with nothing flammable nearby. Cracks and pops of fire from the fireplace should be sure to not land on anything. Before lighting the fire, check the chimney to make sure there are no blockages or animal nests that are lodged in the chimney. You should have you chimney swept every few years as well.

Once you have taken all of these precautionary steps, you should be ready to put your fire place to use!

Inspection for Mold

11/2/2017 (Permalink)

Because mold can be hidden in walls, floors, ductwork, it can be hard to detect until it has already affected your home. Janet bought her first home and was so excited to move in. It took months of enduring a musky odor before she discovered her mold problem. Janet was so surprised that an inspector came across mold growth in her home because she kept the entire house spotless. Sometimes prevention is the strongest fight against mold growth. Dehumidifiers and air conditioners help keep homes dry and strengthen the ventilation throughout the area and should be used when humidity is high or living conditions are damp. Air ducts should be checked every once in a while as well. Ducts go unchecked in many homes for very long periods of time, which sometimes allows undetected buildup and mold growth.

Preventing a Future Water Damage

10/20/2017 (Permalink)

Whether battling the cold and wet weather, or you are making sure your plumbing is secure, preventative actions should be taken against water damages to your home.

To protect your home from the outside elements you can:

  • Make sure your home does not have peeling paint around windows or doors, in which water can easily damage the homes structure.
  • Look for leaks around chimneys and plumbing and attic vents
  • Make sure your air conditioner drains correctly, at a slope, away from outlets.

To prevent water damage that would originate from your plumbing and pipes:

  • Wrap outside faucets
  • Caulk pipes where they meet your home
  • Disconnect garden hoses
  • Drain in-ground sprinkler systems
  • If your leaving your home for an extended period of time, turn off and drain your water system.

Classroom Water Damage

10/20/2017 (Permalink)

This picture shows a school that sustained water damage from a sprinkler system in a classroom.  Notice the fans that are warped. The ceiling tiles were holding water and before we removed them from the ceiling you could see them sagging from the weight of the water.  We removed the ceiling tiles before they fell created  an unsafe environment within the school.  Once the tiles were removed we treated the cavity with an anti-microbial treatment and dried the structure itself with a handful of our fans as well as cleaned the ceiling properly.  We completed this classroom to dry standards in three days and the school was very pleased with SERVPRO. They were able to adjust for the three days that we were in the building so that no class room time was interrupted.

Fire at ASPCA

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

One of the affected areas after the fire.

A vicious fire broke out at the Brandywine Valley ASPCA after a car had crashed into the building and caught fire. This was a devastating fire that a not only a precious human life was lost but the lives of some animals as well. This ASPCA location is one of the largest in the Delaware area had been recently renovated. Many cats and dogs were relocated during the restoration and rebuilding of the facility. Luckily, SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere was able to respond quickly and help bring the building back to life. We are proud to be a part of the Brandywine Valley ASPCA's rebuilding process and have made a point to get involved in their adoption events and make any donations we can.

Mold & Deodorization

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO is inspecting a home or building for mold, there is a variety of key indicators we look for. Visible mold growth or the smell of mold or musty smells are the most apparent signs of mold SERVPRO looks for. In different situations, SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere technicians will check for dampness and mold growth on carpet pads, carpets, we conduct inspections throughout the flooring, walls, and sub-floors. Moisture in the air and temperature within the home/building are monitored and measured by our technicians in certain scenarios as well. If we have found that mold growth is present within the facility, our mitigation process of the mold growth is the next step in our process. If there is no mold growth detected but there is a musty odor in the room which caused for the question and inspection of mold, SERVPRO is able to proceed with their deodorization services instead.

Healthy Home

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Along with checking for mold and making sure you are aware of the signs that could indicate mold in your home, you should make sure you are keeping your home a healthy environment in as many other ways you can. You should ask yourself a few questions in regard to your environment:

  • Do you smoke inside your home?
  • Is the ventilation and exhaust fans between your laundry room, kitchen, and bathroom adequate?
  • When was the last time you changed your air filters?
  • When was the last time you changed the filter or bag to your vacuum?
  • Is your laundry done with bleach or ammonia?
  • Is your gas stove and fire place checked every year for emissions?
  • Was your home build before 1977? If so, has it been checked for led based paint?
  • Do your bathrooms have carpet?

Health Fair

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

Health Fair Booth

Recently SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere attended and hosted a booth at a local health fair. Jackie, one of our wonderful sales representatives was asked to host a booth by the retirement community that the Health Fair was held at. She was flattered to hear that one of our commercial clients wanted SERVPRO to be represented at the event.

She happily attended and talked to many of the residents at the retirement community about our services and the health benefits of having clean air, carpets, and furniture for the elderly. Not only did she speak with residents of the retirement home, but many members of the Hockessin/Elsmere community. We were happy to share the importance of a healthy/clean environment as well as support one of our valued commercial clients.

SERVPRO in the Kitchen

10/16/2017 (Permalink)

Cleaned Fryers

SERVPRO's services are utilized in plenty of commercial buildings like apartment complexes, hotels, schools, churches, and retail buildings. But that is not where our services end. We often clean restaurant kitchens and ventilation systems as well!

A high volume kitchen that has grease build up and accumulated years of dirt is hazardous for both employees and customers. Especially commercial kitchens with many fryers, or smaller kitchens where employees are working in close quarters. We professionally clean many commercial kitchens in order to lower and prevent:

  • Higher Risk of Fire
  • Unpleasant Odors
  • Increased Vermin
  • Environmental Concerns
  • Plumbing Issues
  • Employee Injury
  • Customer Injury
  • Lower Food Quality

Even with proper ventilation systems, grease builds up over time and should be addressed. Call SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere today to have your commercial kitchen assessed!

Before SERVPRO Arrives

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has Arrived on the Scene

  • Leave soot on surfaces until a SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere professional arrives and can assess the Fire damage. Cleaning surfaces may further damage furniture and walls.
  • Restrain from walking, cleaning, or sitting on damaged furniture, carpets, upholstery, and walls until a SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere professional has arrived.
  • Electrical appliances like televisions sets, radios, microwaves, etc. that may have come in contact with water, soot, or fire should be avoided. Touching or cleaning electrical appliances should be handled by a SERVPRO professional or after consulting with an authorized repair service.
  • All food, drinks, and water that are close to a fire damage or a water damage may be contaminated. All consumable goods should not be eaten, they should be thrown out.
  • Leave all ceiling fixtures off. Moving air throughout the damaged rooms may cause more damage. Fire damage or water damage to the electrical wiring of ceiling fixtures are likely to heighten the risk of shock.
  • Do not send damaged clothing and textiles to the dry cleaner before consulting with your insurance agent and your SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere professionals. Damaged clothing and textiles are likely to be mishandled at a dry cleaners rather than with the use of SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere's Esporta services.

Water Damage Tips

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Water Line in a Customer's Home

  • Shut off the source of water, or call those who have the authority to stop the water source

  • Make sure you are safe from electrical shock before turning off circuit breakers for the parts of the building that have been affected by the water damage

  • Hang drapes with coat hangers to keep them from in contact with wet floors and carpets
  • Remove wet furniture to prevent further damage and uneven drying as long as the furniture has not been contaminated
  • If sewage is involved in your water damage, the water is contaminated and you must avoid contact with the water as well as items contaminated by the water

  • Wash your hands after handling any water damage or items that have been in contact with the water damage

Storm Surge

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Hurricane Damage

Storm Surge- the rising of the sea level due to a storm causing pressure in the atmosphere to change and winds to accelerate.

During a hurricane, the Storm Surge is what causes the most damage. Storm surges or the water that floods the land during a hurricane, is the most dangerous weather factor during a hurricane storm.

Hurricane winds can easily reach two hundred miles per hour. Winds that reach such dangerously high speeds are another huge cause of the damage that a hurricane inflicts on an area. Buildings can be ripped open and even down, trees are likely to damage properties, and items left out and unsecured become dangerous.

Heavy rain fall can cause flooding and water damage to homes. Cars are often flooded on the streets and in driveways due to extreme rain fall and flooding. Roads are commonly closed off and unable to be driven on during a Hurricane.

Finding the Source of Water/Mold

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damaged Area

Mold can grow on many materials especially after a water damage.

Some Examples of Possible Materials of Mold Growth:

  • Wallpaper
  • Drywall
  • Paint
  • Carpet
  • Adhesives
  • Wood
  • Fabrics
  • Paper Products
  • Food

The byproduct of mold is the musty smell that grows more and more apparent as the mold spreads. Environments with a lot of  moisture are the most common cause of mold growth, which includes environments that have encountered a water damage. After mold remediation/water remediation has been conducted, the job is not finished. The source of water and moisture that creates the perfect feeding ground for mold must be addressed to prevent future mold growth.

Here is a water damage in a local school that our SERVPRO restored. This school is a perfect example of the importance of finding the source of water damage and moisture. There was a large leak in the plumbing system that caused the water damage but later it was discovered that the old plumbing system had started to fail and water was unable to easily flow through the pipes and had been slowly affecting the lower level bathrooms for some time. If the school had not investigated the source of the water damage and moisture build up over time, they would have encountered this situation again, and a great possibility of mold later on.

Mold and Your Health

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Beginning During Remediation Process.

Whether its a storm, plumbing malfunctions, or equipment mishaps, when water affects your home, the risk of encountering mold growth in the near future runs much higher. If the level of humidity is not controlled in the damaged area, moisture is absorbed into the environment and mold spores will begin to multiply. SERVPRO works in a timely manner because we are well trained in the importance of mold prevention and water extraction. Whether it be after a water damage or simply for your awareness, be alert for:

  • Visible Mold
  • Strong Musty Odors
  • Evidence of Current Moisture Problems
  • Evidence of Previous Moisture Problems
  • Excessive Humidity
  • Dampness

SERVPRO technicians are highly trained and knowledgeable about water damage, moisture in an environment, and mold and are able to bring your home back to the condition it was in before any damage occurred.

Extreme Flooding

10/12/2017 (Permalink)

Basement Flood

Extra precaution should be taken when walking into a flooded area. Everyone on the flood scene should dress protectively when entering an area to lower the risk of injuring yourself on something that is not visible in the water.  Any food that has come in contact with flood waters or areas that may have been contaminated must be thrown out. Even if the food items are properly sealed or canned, it is still a possibility that they could be contaminated or contaminating other items if kept. If furniture is lightly damaged and can be restored, prop cushions and any other items that can me dried up for air circulation and keep drapes above water level to hang dry. Wipe dirt from surfaces before doing your primary cleaning unless SERVPRO has arrived on the scene.

Irma Rescues

10/12/2017 (Permalink)

Playing & Bathing Hurricane Irma Rescues

Hurricane Irma hit Florida hard and many communities were impacted in the area. Not only are hundreds of families suffering from the harsh effects of Hurricane Irma, but so are many of the animals and pets of those families in Florida. Recently, SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere went to the local SPCA and volunteered in the best way we could. Many dogs and cats were rescued from Hurricane Irma and flown from Florida to Delaware and brought to various SPCA locations. We helped bathe many of the dogs rescued from Hurricane Irma and got them ready for adoption. Being in the Cleanup industry, we did what we do best and cleaned up plenty of our furry friends as a way of giving back and contributing to the restoration of Florida.

Fire Extinguishers in the Work Place

10/10/2017 (Permalink)

Office Building Fire Extinguisher Location

Whether working from home or in a large commercial office building, the knowledge of how to correctly and safely use a fire extinguisher and when to use them is something everyone should have. How to operate a fire extinguisher should be displayed somewhere in the office for all employees to see. Here are a list of tips and information on when it is time to use a fire extinguisher:

  • The extinguisher should be clean and without any damage
  • An escape plan has been established and the fire is not blocking the way out of the building
  • All others in the building have been alerted
  • The local fire department has been called
  • Everyone is safe from the smoke and toxins the fire is creating
  • The fire is contained to a single object

Green Peace Day

9/15/2017 (Permalink)

Recycle when possible

Greenpeace day was founded in 1971.  The day is to remind everyone to take on environmental issues and raise awareness to help preserve our planet Earth.  This all came to fruition when seventeen activists protested nuclear testing near the shores of our great State of Alaska. Since then the Greenpeace group has worldwide memberships.  This group takes on campaigns continually supporting environmental issues and raising awareness.

We at SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere try and do our part daily as well.  We try and clean up our own mess and dispose of our debris in a proper manner.  We use green products when made available to us. We turn off our engines when we can to help pollution.  We drain our water in the proper manner.  We try our best when we can.

Fire Damage Tips

9/13/2017 (Permalink)

  • Prevent soot particles from further damaging your furniture and carpets by keeping movement throughout the home to a minimum

  • Change your HVAC filter but leave systems off until a professional can come check the home

  • Cover HVAC air registers with layers of cheesecloth to prevent soot particles from getting in/out of your HVAC system

  • If your home electricity is off, empty your refrigerator and freezer to prevent mold and odors. Keep your refrigerator doors open after removing food

  • In the case of your heating being off during the winter, pour antifreeze down your sinks, toilet bowls, tubs, and holding tanks to avoid freezing and bursting pipes

  • When walking on damaged carpets and floors, place towels down to prevent tracking of soot and further damage

Hurricane Harvey

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

Helping Texas

As a Disaster Recovery Team and National partners with American Red Cross, SERVPROs from all over have traveled to Texas and helped those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. SERVPRO is working twenty-four-seven in restoring the communities that have had significant damage since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas. We are proud to be helping those affected by Hurricane Harvey return to their homes and rebuild their communities.

On the tail end of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma came in strong with vengeance in the state of Florida.  She whirled through and came in strong.  As a result, it activated more SERVPRO Storm teams to come in the devastated areas.

SERVPRO'S from all over the country came to aid to most of these areas.  We have been working tirelessly around the clock to help those in need.

We love what we do.

SERVPRO Donates

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

Bringing our donations into the Delaware Humane Society.

With our Esporta machine, we are able to clean blankets and sheets back to brand new condition. We have cleaned boxes of sheets and blankets and donated them to the Delaware Humane Society for their kennels, cages, and multiple rooms. We are animal lovers here at SERVPRO and are always excited about giving back to the community.

The robust machine is capable of cleaning an array of textiles.  We can clean shoes, purses, clothing, bedding and more.  There are occasions when some of the items are replaced or unwanted after an event has taken place in some homes and/or businesses.  We here at SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere take that opportunity and carefully box and bag those items and simply donate to those in need.

Clean Facilities

6/1/2017 (Permalink)

Our Staff in Our Clean Work Place

Having a clean, healthy and safe environment does not take a lot of hard work.  Consistency, proper training and communication is essential in achieving great results.  Having your team come together and identify the vital areas of concern should be first addressed.  Perhaps making a list of things to do daily, monthly, quarterly and annually. Perhaps some of these tasks are divided and rotate. If everyone makes a conscious effort to perform the daily tasks assigned to his/her work area, the outcome will be cleaner and healthier.

Things like taking out the trash, properly closing down the computers, making sure all cords that are not in used unplugged. (this could mean coffee makers, space heaters, radios, fans etc.), securing the office would be examples of daily tasks. Weekly tasks could be wiping down desks and phones, running a quick vacuum of the area, organizing files better and anything else that was identified in the original list.  The same would be true for the quarterly and annual workplace tasks. Some great annual tasks would be fire extinguisher tags being checked, deep cleaning of all carpets, wall and window cleaning and the list can go on.  By communicating what the expectations are and maintaining those things will help reduce frustrations.

The Power of Four

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

Erin, Jackie, Paul and Caitlin

These four individuals are a powerful group.  They think outside the box and came up with some great ideas. They love and take pride in what they do. Within the building industry they are coming up with new and unique ways to improve our relations.  Most recently they tolled out a new plan that has really been working for us.  The amount of Emergency Ready Plans this team has prepared are amazing.  The go into buildings and point out all the potential issues, tag specific areas with cautions and help put together a written plan on what to do if an emergency arises. They pass the message on that SERVPRO is here to help.  They give the customer a binder or thumb drive whichever the customer prefers.  We also now have a mobile app for this as well.

SERVPRO to the rescue in LA

SERVPRO'S from all surrounding areas head in from all over to help the victims.  SERVPRO is a team oriented company that has compassion for everything we do, and everyone we help.  When another area of the country is impacted with a storm or tragedy we can call upon our fellow teammates to come in and help.  Sometimes due to the area being affected it may require out of state SERVPRO's to respond in a time of need.  In this specific case, SERVPRO's from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware among other states reported in to help the victims of this disaster that struck among them.  After all was said and done, all the help of these surrounding SERVPRO's were able to team up together and restore this broken community.

SERVPRO Stools

SERVPRO Stools

How fun and playful are these SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere stools?  They are stools on a swivel that help show our SERVPRO Pride.  We have them placed throughout the shop. We even put one in the waiting room.  They were made especially for SERVPRO'S and we could not resist buying them.  We are always in need of seats around the shop. Guys and gals are always finishing up loose end paperwork on their iPad's and this is a great place for them to have a seat.  They are colorful, fun, cheery and quite comfortable.  It seems like a lot of items around the shop have SERVPRO written or painted on them.  What a fun and happy way to show everyone our SERVPRO Pride.

Roof Hole

Roof Tarp

Here is a team of SERVPRO men attending to a hole in the roof as well as the side wall.  In this picture you can see the men working to put down a tarp and securing it with furring strips. They also placed a board over the side window. After a mishap has taken place in a home or building sometimes the structure needs to be secured from additional outdoor elements. Additional elements may be something like additional rain and winds.  The furring strips are placed to help raise, level or help secure the tarp and/or wood. They are placed perpendicular to the joists and then they are nailed in place.  This is a temporary fix until the roof can be properly repaired by a roofer.

SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere win the lottery! The National "Liquid Laundry Detergent Promo Winner" lottery that is. After a lot of hard work, a ton of loads, countless cycles and great smelling clothes, SERVPRO of Hockessin finally took home the prize. Throughout the entire company nationwide, this lottery is something everyone enjoys and something everyone can be proud of. It helps to remind us how every aspect and service of our great company is important and useful. While people's homes and properties are important, their belongings are just as important too. And with every load, we do our best to provide comfort to those who may have lost something valuable to them. And like we say here, "If you need clean clothes, SERVPRO of Hockessin knows!"

Never know what to expect on a job!

Here are two guys sent to do a simple oven clean at a restaurant in SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere's area.  What should have been a task for two to four hours ended up being over eight hours! When SERVPRO of Hockessin pulled out the oven's such a sight was to be found.  The team worked tirelessly through the night to get the job done.  We had to make sure the restaurant was able to re-open the next morning.  They encountered many hurdles along the way. The crew went through a case of disposable tyvek's and numerous cartridges on their respirators.  When the crew saw the amount of previously unknown debris they called in for back up immediately. With the help of others at the SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere location the job was a success! SERVPRO always tries to be prepared but we still run into the unexpected.  Even with the challenges, we still were able to complete the task.

SERVPRO helps Schools re-open

SERVPRO here to help.

SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere was able to help three schools at the same time to get opened for school in the nick of time.  Schools were closed for the summer time and they wanted them back up in tip top shape for the students to return to a clean environment.  Some of the schools gave little time and strict constraints in order to obtain the desired results!  It was quite a challenge but SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere came to the rescue and the challenge was met! These schools were able to re-open in time and it left both the administration and the staff very pleased with us! SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere felt a strong sense of responsibility to not only the school, but the workers and students who were going to be returning to the school, and we could not have been more happier to help!

Servpro of Hockessin/Elsmere doing what we do best!

While driving by a burning house, a bystander had noticed a man still within the residence. With great heroism, the young man was able to get inside and save the mans life. As the scene had calmed, and fire stopped, SERVPRO of Hockessin was on site and had came upon the residents pet, still alive! While delicately removing the wreckage and debris, they were able to safely get the pet out and get him to care. While in shock and distraught with what had just occurred, the owner was pleased to find out that his beloved pet was in fact saved. With the great bravery of a young man, and the great help of SERVPRO, a man and his beloved pet were able to be rejoined and saved.
