The Impact of Mold Damage on Wilmington Homes

SERVPRO Remediates Mold Damage in Local Properties

Mold is a product of moisture, spores, and suitable materials. When these conditions exist, colonies can be formed in as little as 48 hours. The impact that these organisms ultimately have on a home can be overwhelming, especially in situations where spores have been allowed to spread without preventative actions. Certain materials can be directly compromised by spreading mold organisms, including:

  • Clothing
  • Upholstery
  • Organic building materials
  • Wood
  • Carpeting/padding

Wilmington mold damage might typically require several types of restorers, remediators, and reconstruction specialists to resolve it entirely. With SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere, you have a full-service contractor to address every needed phase of restoration to bring your property back to pre-mold conditions. Our 24/7 availability means you are not waiting for regular operating hours for this work to begin when it threatens your household.

The Likelihood of Mold

With Wilmington being positioned near the Christina River and the Brandywine River in New Castle County, more homes and businesses are exposed to moist conditions. These natural environments can facilitate mold growth, but the situation is even more likely following disasters like water damage or flooding to the structure.

Did You Know: Mold spores exist naturally in almost every environment, making total mold removal impractical and extremely costly. SERVPRO prioritizes active colony removal to restore safe conditions through our remediation processes.

What is Mold Damage Remediation?

Remediation is an effort to remove active colonies from the property where organisms have begun to impact materials and contents throughout a damaged structure. Depending on the severity of these situations, the type of material affected, and how widespread this damage has become, several types of mold damage removal strategies are effective:

  • Sporicidal Products – Superficial treatment using biocides can eliminate spores on contact when they have not migrated beyond the surface.
  • Abrasive Action – Sanding and scrubbing with implements to remove a thin outer layer of the hosting material to eliminate penetrating organisms.
  • Blasting – Abrasive cleaning with pressurized media to eradicate organisms without substantial damage to the underlying materials.

The Importance of Containment

Mold will continually move and find new hosting materials to infest without direct action to stop this migration. Our SERVPRO professionals need to implement containment strategies early to prevent the movement of these threatening spores. Polypropylene sheeting, wood framing, tension poles, and other implements make up quickly erected containment zones.

Removing the Presence of Mold Damage Effects

Mold is an abrasive and overwhelming situation for many homes and businesses, leaving lingering effects that can be hard to remove without focused cleaning and attention. One of the most pressing concerns for the post-mold recovery of households is malodors. The movement and growth of an organism release volatile organic compounds that become a strong, harsh odor for house occupants. Deodorizing products are vital in reducing the severity of these malodors, primarily in active areas of the house. Counteractant beads and granules absorb odor molecules, making foggers and hydroxyl machines more effective later.

Preventing Mold Recurrences

It is essential to our professionals that you do not become a customer that ends up on an endless loop of mold recurrences because the underlying trigger of the organisms was never resolved or overcome. We understand the importance of having credible and accomplished contractors available to help with a state license. We can perform several types of repairs pertinent to preventing mold resurfacing:

  • Addressing Water Infiltration
  • Repairing Plumbing
  • Replacing Removed Materials

Mold damage in Wilmington homes can be more destructive and hazardous than many property owners think. With the fast response and reliability of our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere remediation professionals, we can quickly address the damage that mold growth can do. Give us a call anytime at (302) 992-0104.

Mold Remediation Everywhere You Need It in Your Wilmington Home

4/1/2023 (Permalink)

mold spots on a wall Call SERVPRO to remediate mold damage to the walls in your Wilmington home.

Remediation Begins with Effective Inspections

Mold can be an intrusive and overwhelming aspect of your life. As stressful as this development might be, the question becomes whether you know about all the mold that could be growing. Organisms spread quickly, and much of this can occur out of sight. Our inspection services can help when you are not sure.

Finding Mold in Your House

The mold remediation in your Wilmington home often stems from identifying or tracking the possibility of mold growth in your property. Some of the ways that you might suspect this development include:

  • Wet Areas – Moisture is one of the major contributing factors to mold development. When you have materials in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom that stay consistently wet, mold might be forming behind the scenes where you cannot see.
  • Malodors – Sometimes other aspects of a developing mold colony reach you before the sight of a growing colony. Migrating mold emits a strong, musty odor in many cases. This distinctive smell can alert homeowners to a budding issue before the surface shows the mold.
  • Spotting – The most unmistakable sign of mold growth in your home is witnessing the early stages of its development on drywall and other organic surfaces. Irregular spotting can appear in various colors, indicating remediation action is needed.

We have effective remediation solutions to track what moisture you suspect and what you cannot see. Our inspection process is thorough, monitoring damp pockets in wall systems and exploring the movement of mold colonies farther into structural cavities and inaccessible areas.

With the destructive capacities of mold growth, you need to be certain when your family faces these threats. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere can help with a thorough mold inspection and subsequent remediation solution when you need it. Call us at (302) 992-0104.

Hockessin Mold Remediation Takes Superior Mold Inspection Methods

11/4/2022 (Permalink)

mold damaged ceiling, drain pipe Sometimes mold damage does not need a SERVPRO inspection. We can remediate and fix this Hockessin home.

We Offer High-Quality Mold Inspection in Hockessin

Hockessin residents are encouraged to have their homes routinely inspected for mold. These regular evaluations inform them of any potential mold-related issues before they morph into more serious and costly problems to resolve. Fortunately, SERVPRO offers high-quality inspection services to local homeowners concerned about possible mold outbreaks and associated damages.

SERVPRO’s mold inspection experts in Hockessin employ only the most advanced equipment and techniques to locate potential leaks and any fungal growths arising from them. Company mold specialists have easily found hidden attic mold, bathroom mildew, basement fungus, and black mold using their cutting-edge methods. Moreover, such procedures have enabled SERVPRO to better plan mold remediation efforts. Once onsite and inspecting a home, our technicians generally:

  • Look for any visible signs of mold damage on structural elements and furnishings first before trying to visually identify possible water sources fueling mold by searching for exposed ceiling, pipe, appliance, or container leaks
  • Next, use high-tech infrared cameras to peer behind ceilings and walls to locate all hidden water sources that are now or might in the future contribute to mold development
  • Then, attempt to find out which structural materials and household contents have excess moisture in them with state-of-the-art moisture sensors
  • After that, assess the severity of the water damage done to impacted materials with moisture meters
  • water vapor in the ambient air, to determine how much airborne moisture must be removed to facilitate efficient drying.

All these steps set the stage for the remediation work that follows. So, the more detailed and extensive they are, the easier the cleanup and restoration phases are to complete.

Considering our mold inspection expertise, it’s no wonder why so many local homeowners have their residences evaluated by SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere. Call us anytime at (302) 992-0104 for assistance.

No More Mistakes With Mold Damage Remediation in Wilmington

Close Up of Mold Mold can occur in the most unreachable places. Contact the mold remediation professionals at SERVPRO today for help.

Why SERVPRO Wilmington Provides Effective Professional Mold Damage Remediation

When you first notice signs of a mold infestation in Wilmington, chances are good. Some self-help might be your first choice. Unfortunately, mold often does not respond as expected to conventional cleaning methods because it is not typical household soiling. Introducing the moisture mold needs to grow during cleaning can make a mold problem even worse. Our mold remediation managers and technicians follow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocols, so we deliver successful outcomes.

Mold damage in your Wilmington home does not need to cause panic, even if you feel as though you tried everything and failed. When we follow the proper procedures, mold growth and the damage it inflicts on structural components abate.

The SERVPRO mold remediation team locates, contains, and removes the active mold colonies. Containment methods include plastic barriers sealing off the work area and often a negative pressure air scrubbing system to force and capture contaminants through HEPA filters before venting to the outdoors. Our technicians wear personal protective gear to prevent tracking moldy residues into unaffected areas.

On solid surfaces, SERVPRO employees use mechanical means to remove the mold, including brushes and scrapers. Soda blasting is a gentle but effective way to rid some porous building materials of mold damage. We vacuum and wipe up debris in the workspace, bagging them for hazardous waste disposal following local regulations. The now-cleared area receives treatment with an EPA-registered antimicrobial agent. Coatings containing fungicides can prepare affected surfaces for further restoration efforts while at the same time inhibiting mold regrowth.

We follow up by recommending you eliminate the source of moisture that fueled the microbial growth initially and help with repairs. Mold spores are always in the environment, both indoors and out. They cause little harm when dry, but if water is available for as few as 24 to 48 hours, the moisture can cause spores to begin multiplying, damaging organic surfaces in your home and creating an airborne irritant to susceptible individuals allergic mold or its toxins.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is ready to help abate active mold infestations and address the moisture sources that caused them. Call (302) 992-0104 to schedule a remediation assessment.

Fire Restoration Focuses on Smoke Migration in Wilmington Homes

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

a house on fire with smoke billowing from the roof Smoke and fire can move through your property quickly while causing damage. Contact SERVPRO to assess the situation and formulate a remediation plan.

Smoke Behavior Impacts Several Surfaces Before Wilmington Fire Restoration

No two fire losses are the same, but the behavior of smoke rarely changes. Under specific conditions, smoke travels rapidly throughout the property, impacting several surfaces and cycling in an active current until extinguishing the fire.

The Spread of the Fire Disaster

Among the greatest contributing factors to the complexity of fire restoration for Wilmington homes is how far-reaching smoke damage becomes. During the disaster, fire loss effects spread quickly through available pathways like the HVAC system and doorways. The greater the recovery area, the more involved the restoration.

Turbulence of Convection

As the heat and temperatures fluctuate and change during active fire damage events, the produced smoke travels in various paths to affect multiple property areas. Convection currents force smoke under pressure horizontally and through a turbulent cycle, impacting several structural surfaces simultaneously.

Type of Smoke Damage

While the movement and the pressures of smoke damage can immensely determine the cleaning difficulties restorers have in the property, the consistency and composition of this damage play a part as well. There are multiple kinds of smoke damage possible in residences, including:

  • Wet Smoke – Wet smoke develops from slow-burning and lower-heat fires smoldering in the house. This generates a higher concentration of smoke solids to impact building materials.
  • Dry Smoke – High heat fires produce a thin and manageable soot deposit but often with greater structural concerns.
  • Protein Deposits – Grease fires produce thick, formidable, moist smoke damage deposits on counters, cabinets, and wall assemblies.
  • Oil Puffback – Oil furnaces are a popular alternative to electric heat, but when micro-explosions occur in the ignition chamber, the result can be ionized soot damage.

The behavior and movement of smoke damage in your home can vastly impact the ease of cleaning and restoration. Our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team works to provide rapid mitigating solutions, including soot management for homes and businesses as soon as we arrive. Call today at (302) 992-0104.

Wilmington Residential Mold Remediation Eliminates Odors Caused by Microbes

Mold damage in Wilmington homes can quickly become unsafe for homeowners to handle in as little as a few days. However, because the moisture that allows mold to thrive exists in hard-to-reach areas of the property, mold can grow for days or weeks before homeowners detect it. Over time, this obfuscation can create more costly air quality and structural integrity concerns.

SERVPRO mold damage remediation professionals salvage Wilmington homes with a combination of sanitation, drying, and containment according to Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) guidelines. This standard ensures that homeowners receive 24-hour service that consistently observes restoration industry best practices.

SERVPRO Availability Can Halt Microbe Damage and Reduce Costs

SERVPRO’s mold cleanup services are available during weekends, late nights, and holidays because disasters can strike anywhere and at any time within a home. The faster the situation can be resolved, the safer a home and its occupants can be without risking potential health effects created by microbes.

  • SERVPRO 24/7 services are performed by technicians that use personal protective equipment (PPE) and establish containment procedures and decontamination spaces to prevent mold spores from spreading and gaining a foothold anywhere else on the property
  • Negative air pressure equipment, HEPA filter vacuums, and structural drying tools render the home inhospitable for mold growth while restoring the property to a safe, habitable condition for homeowners.
  • SERVPRO odor control strategies include HVAC cleanup, fogging with ultra-low volume foggers, powerful ventilation box fans that exchange air before and after deodorization, and 40-60 psi pump and trigger sprays that sanitize contaminated surfaces with EPA-registered biocides

Need Flood Damage, Cleanup, and Reconstruction Services in Wilmington – Call SERVPRO

Flooding in the Wilmington area can cause a great deal of damage to homes and businesses. Debris, chemicals, bacteria, biological material are carried into your home or business, wreaking havoc with the contents and structure. Porous items absorb water and begin to swell. Anything made of particle board easily absorbs water and moisture. Drywall is also quickly damaged from the high moisture levels.

SERVPRO can help with flood damage restoration and reconstruction of your home in Wilmington. We complete a full inspection and prepare recommendations regarding those items we can save vs. those we must replace. Often carpets and under padding must be removed and replaced. Our process of controlled demolition minimizes the amount of material that must be removed and replaced.

Need a Guide to Understanding Mold Remediation in Wilmington

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

Mold on wall Count on the professionals at SERVPRO if you find mold damage in your home.

Adherence to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mold abatement protocol is why SERVPRO is a top choice in Wilmington

You hear many promises concerning residential mold remediation in Wilmington. Although homeowners understandably would like to rely on a company to eradicate black mold and other fungal infestations, the ubiquitous presence of mold spores in all dwellings means an outbreak is just a few drops of lingering moisture away. Complete mold removal is impossible, as spores remain. Successful mold remediation requires controlling moisture as well as using mechanical mold colony removal techniques.

Why Choose SERVPRO and the EPA Mold Remediation Protocol?

Years of research resulted in the EPA developing a step-by-step process that delivers long-term results for Wilmington residents cognisant of the link between water damage restoration and practical mold growth inhibition strategies. Wise property owners look for mold specialists who understand and can provide effective water damage mitigation and remediation, which is why SERVPRO, with our extensive water damage restoration background, is appealing.

What Should Homeowners Expect During EPA-based Mold Remediation?

Safety and sustainability are the two pillars of the EPA mold inspections, remediations, and removal model. Preventing the spread of moldy materials is one reason why SERVPRO crew members wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while avoiding inhaling or skin contact is another. Negative pressure air scrubbing technology adds to the safety, filtering mold contaminants before exhausting the contained space’s atmosphere to the outside. Once we establish the extent of the mold infestation, including finding additional damp areas using moisture detectors and meters, we construct a containment barrier of heavy-duty plastic. Then our technicians:

  • Scrape and brush the mold organisms off non-porous surfaces
  • Blast porous materials with soda or dry ice to remove visible mold and incapacitate the deeply embedded hyphae’s (mold ‘roots”) ability to regenerate
  • Gather and double bag moldy debris, including resides vacuumed or wiped up, for lawful disposal
  • Treat cleaned surfaces with EPA-registered antimicrobials

Proven processes and comprehensive training in water damage and microbial abatement are why SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere earns consideration for your mold remediation needs. Call us at (302) 992-0104 for more information and to schedule an assessment.

Why Flood Damage in Wilmington Smells Terrible.

flood damaged laundry room. Flood damage odors are no DIY project. SERVPRO technicians are IICRC certified for any size job. They are trained and experienced in restoration jobs.

Mitigation, cleanup, and deodorization – what your flooded Wilmington home needs.

Flooding is a dreaded occurrence that can happen any time of the year in Wilmington. The flood itself can sweep cars off roadways, destroy young plants in green areas, and destroy the interiors of homes. The destructive after-effects continue, making a fast recovery imperative.

While the disarray seen varies throughout your Wilmington neighborhood, flood damage smells terrible wherever it goes. SERVPRO can get rid of this odor while removing the physical debris throughout your residence. To do this, we rely on specific chemical agents and application methods, including:

  • Power-washing the interior to remove smaller debris particles and the bulk of pathogens,
  • Spray application of biocides like Sporicidin or Benefect to regain control over microbial populations,
  • Use deodorizing materials (gel-packs, activated charcoal pellets), and
  • Use air movers to push foul-smelling air outside.

Many odors come from materials we remove and dispose of outside after flood damage happens, so a large percentage of odor-creating materials get pulled out. What remains can still cause problems when temperatures increase, so we encourage our customers to call us if odors reappear during the Spring and Summer.

Call the technicians at SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 for all of your house’s flood damage mitigation requirements.

Firefighters Want to Protect Families and Businesses in Wilmington.

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

Inside of a SERVPRO trailer with equipment. Fire restoration is no easy task. Call SERVPRO and their IICRC certified technicians for the job you need. Anytime 24/7 365 days a year.

It is also why SERVPRO's fire damage crew keeps training.

Firefighters like the ones we have here in Wilmington are a dedicated bunch. A fire in the middle of the night can leave a family feeling as bad as their residence looks. Our specialists are also committed to making a bad situation better.

In Wilmington, our firefighters are an important part of our community, even when they are not responding to an alarm. As fire science increases and new developments in other areas let fire departments in our area increase their ability to serve us. This often requires procuring new equipment.

Fire departments used to rely on very basic equipment.

One of the latest firehouses to close, Fire House #5 on Gilpin Avenue, used to be called the Water Witch Fire Company. In the late 1800s, water pump trucks only cost a couple of thousand dollars.

Without the equipment used today, a house fire could become much more severe and result in extreme fire damage:

  • More extensive property loss happening during a fire. Equipment provided to firefighters did not allow them to safely and easily enter houses or businesses,
  • Increased injuries sustained by firefighters, compared to those suffered today.

Accidents still happen to these heroic individuals, but their protective sense of duty pushes them to do as much as possible to reduce the damage caused during a fire.

What is it like inside a firehouse?

Firefighters do not work regular eight-hour shifts like seen in most types of work. They are much longer. Because of the extended shifts firefighters keep, they also sleep at the firehouse. They eat their meals there. They also spend time watching television, playing games, and reading. It is like a home away from home, and it looks like it, too. There is a living room, a kitchen, a dining room, bedrooms, and a laundry area. But the garage is much bigger in a firehouse because fire trucks need protection from the rain. This is partly because of the equipment and tools used during firefighting.

SERVPRO's improved equipment increases our fire damage mitigation abilities.

We know that continuous training ensures that we learn the latest techniques and developments, much like Wilmington's firefighters keep up-to-date. We also use mock buildings that give a hands-on perspective in many areas that affect fire-damaged homes.

The severely traumatizing situation caused by a fire also

  • often endangers family members in their very own home, but we can make it safe again,
  • destroys personal possessions and heirlooms alike, but SERVPRO's technicians can restore these priceless items or know a professional restoration expert who can, and
  • is only the beginning of a rocky situation, which our seasoned guidance can help become more manageable.

We want to make a bad situation bearable for our customers, which is why SERVPRO answers all calls immediately, just like the fire department. It could be someone calling about an emergency. Delaying often results in tremendous and unnecessary additional problems.

So why SERVPRO for mold removal in Hockessin? Rapid remediation is the best method to stop the threat and reduce damage. Our teams can quickly remove visible mold with chemical cleaners, and dry sponges or cloths.

What If the Mold Penetrated Wall or Roof Supports?

  • Hand-Sanding – Team members use sandpaper to attack small spots of mold that just penetrated the surface.
  • Power-Sanding – Specialists use power sanders to remove multiple layers of wood so they can vacuum the spores and wood dust into sealed bags for disposal.

Call SERVPRO to Restore Your Wilmington Home After a Fire or Any Disaster

Fire is the probably most feared disaster for any homeowner. Except for being in a hurricane or tornado, it is the most physically damaging to a home. It leaves otherwise untouched property covered in soot residues left by burning material.

Which is Worse to Deal with, Soot Residues, or Physical Damage?

There is no worse type of damage, only different methods to deal with the different types of Wilmington fire damage. That’s why SERVPRO is the best option. Our crews train to deal with every type of damage to your home, regardless of what it may be.

Where Do Your Crews Begin?

After laying down plastic sheeting to avoid tracking residues into untouched areas, our crews pull out everything too damaged to repair or clean. That includes scorched items like carpets, flooring, wall paneling, and more.

After removing it all from your home, specialists then move in to clean each surface. Depending on the thickness and type of residue, team members use the following methods:

  • Dry Wiping – Specialists use sponges and cloths first to remove powdery residues left behind by higher temperatures and faster burning fires.
  • Wet Wiping – Here, team members use sponges and cloths with water or a cleaner to remove thicker layers of residues and stickier residues left by slower burning fires with a lower temperature.
  • Agitation – This method is preferred on stone and brick surfaces to remove any residues that penetrate the surface and resist dry and wet wiping.

What about the Smell?

SERVPRO specialists use cleaning agents designed to suppress and eliminate malodors generated by the soot residues. Where needed, they also have access to ozone generators designed to produce particles that bind with and eliminate odors, no matter how deeply they penetrate surfaces.

Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere today to restore your home here or in Newport. Start the process today by calling (302) 992-0104. We are here for you.

How Can I Tackle My Wilmington Water Damage Before Family Visits?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

Two men sliding down a set of stairs on a big red pillow. SERVPRO knows how important family is. Let us handle your water damage, so you can get back to the fun stuff.

SERVPRO Knows Best Practices for Water Mitigation to Ensure Your Entertaining in Wilmington Goes Off Without a Hitch

If you have plans for a family gathering, barbecue, or another celebration, the last thing you want is water damage to put a damper on the festivities. If you had a pipe burst that sends water into multiple rooms, cleaning up water safely and effectively is the best course of action. Instead of taking on the burden, SERVPRO has the manpower, proven cleaning methods, and innovative technology to make sure your Wilmington home is ready when guests are scheduled to arrive.

Not only is excessive moisture an issue with water mitigation in Wilmington, but there could be several potential hazards present. Our skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) follow best practices for helping you get the results you need. The faster that you take action to address the water, the less cost is involved, and less damage takes hold of your furnishings, belongings, and structural materials.

Can I Do Anything Until SERVPRO Arrives?

Once the pipe bursts and the incident becomes evident, it is essential that you try to shut off the water supply for preventing further loss. You can then contact your insurance company and call our team so that we can deploy a crew to your location.

How Much Water Damage Could There Be?

Depending on the situation, a burst pipe could send hundreds of gallons of water throughout the immediate loss zone. This water then migrates into dry spaces, leading to the potential for extensive damage to hardwood floors, carpeting, drywall, and anything else in the path. We are Faster to Any Size Disaster with any emergency call so that we can limit further damage to your property. Our crew chief knows how to handle each water emergency, and the assessment begins on arrival so that we can articulate the best possible restoration strategy.

What Types of Damage Am I Looking At?

We know that DIY methods using consumer products and tools might be tempting, especially if you have a planned gathering coming up. However, our skilled IICRC-certified technicians use the right tools for the job so that we can minimize damage from multiplying. When you have a burst pipe within your home, you could be faced with:

  •   Significant water infiltrating your home may put pressure on your building’s structure and cause wood and other natural materials to warp and deteriorate.
  •   Mold growth may start in as little as 24 hours because extensive moisture creates the ultimate environment for microbes to thrive.
  •   Water may start to migrate into wall cavities and subflooring, which calls for involved structural drying procedures.
  •   Stagnant water impacts your possessions as well as materials like carpeting, where permanent damage could result.

Is This Water Contaminated?

In most situations where a pipe bursts, it sends out clean water throughout the loss zone. This lessens the chance of contamination and increases our ability to salvage your possessions and various building materials. However, microbes are ever-present throughout your interior, and they can reproduce when given a chance to fester. Anything that your water comes into contact with during the event may also pose a challenge during cleanup.

Addressing Saturated Carpet

Our team gets to work fast when water migrates from a burst pipe in a kitchen or bathroom into adjoining rooms with carpeted floors. We pre-inspect and pre-test carpets to look for:

  •   Carpet style and fibers
  •   The level of soiling as well as the type of soil
  •   Colorfastness
  •   Carpet stain-resistance
  •   Pre-existing damage
  •   Any care instructions or warranties from the carpet manufacturer

Water extraction is critical to salvaging the carpeting, the carpet padding, and also the subfloor beneath. Drying is elemental in conjunction with extraction methods so that we can pull any remaining moisture from the carpet fibers. Effective drying measures keep the fibers from taking on additional soils while preventing microorganism growth. The dry times for your carpets depend on the moisture present, as well as the humidity and temperatures within the loss zone. Our crew follows a formula for drying that requires:

  •   Air movement
  •   Heat
  •   Low humidity

In many situations, we open doors and windows using ceiling fans, industrial fans, air movers, or your HVAC system to create the perfect atmosphere to foster efficient drying. If the weather is humid during the restoration project, we may require additional drying equipment or techniques to achieve our carpet drying goals.

Will My Interior Have Lingering Foul or Musty Odors?

Our goal is to bring your interior back to life so that you can enjoy your upcoming event or gathering at home. Our team has access to a selection of EPA-registered broad-spectrum disinfectants great for use on non-porous surfaces. We utilize all products per their labeling, and we follow guidelines for dilution and dispersal within your home. Everything is left clean, sanitized, and smelling fresh.

For any water mitigation needs that you have, count on our trained crew at SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere. We are available 24/7 for emergency service by calling (302) 992-0104.

A Kitchen Fire Has Ruined My Home. Where Should I Seek Help?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

Kitchen after fire SERVPRO has the experienced technicians with the equipment and expertise your home needs after a fire mishap. Give us a call right away.

Contact SERVPRO Technicians in Wilmington to Perform Fire  Restoration in Your Property.

Many fires begin in the kitchen, and they can lead to severe destruction in a home. Immediately soot and smoke residues get into contact with water, the solution begins to discolor surfaces. SERVPRO technicians can help you to not only get your property back to its former glory but also minimize as much loss as possible.

What is fire damage restoration?

It is the process where professional restorers repair and restore homes after damage resulting from smoke, soot, fire, and corrosive byproducts. When you contact our technicians to perform fire restoration in your Wilmington property, we can take every restoration step seriously.

The water used to fight the flames may soak into various surfaces, weakening the structure while the charcoal-like odor may start to get stronger each day the fire damage mitigation and restoration process is delayed. Our restoration procedure involves water removal, cleaning soot from affected surfaces, and deodorization.

How do you prevent further damage from occurring?

Our technicians have decades of experience and access to state-of-the-art equipment that helps us mitigate fire damage of any size or scope. Our team of technicians comprises of:

Fabric and upholstery cleaning technician

Water damage restoration expert

An odor control technician

Our priority during restoration is to stop further damage. Heavy rains in your area can put your property at risk of water damage. Our technicians can protect your property from moisture by boarding up any openings, and weakened surfaces. We are proficient in water damage mitigation and restoration. This includes removing water from affected surfaces and drying them thoroughly.

We also check for moisture in a home during the fire restoration process. An eyeball test is not accurate for detecting moisture or areas affected by mold. SERVPRO technicians can use thermal imaging cameras to check for moisture in the affected property.

How do restorers clean surfaces covered with smoke and soot residues?

The soot and smoke residues that accompany a house fire can be impossible to clean without advanced cleaning products. That is because the staining that occurs during the unfortunate incident goes beyond the surface. We can use brown out mixed with shampoo super concentrate to remove colored spots and stains on carpet and fabric.

Cleaning the affected area does not necessarily mean that odors cannot linger throughout your property. The charcoal-like smell can hide in your furniture, carpets, and upholstery. Our technicians can use instant odor counteractant pellets to control the odor in your property. The pellets ensure your home smells fresh and clean.

A fire can cause irreversible damage to your property. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 for help. We can restore your property to its preloss state in a brief period, making the fire loss seem "Like it never even happened."

How Do I Handle a Roof with a Hole from a Fire Until Repairs in Wilmington Can Get Made?

5/10/2020 (Permalink)

charred interior of house Fire damage can displace families in the most severe cases. Contact SERVPRO to mediate the damage to make sure this doesn’t happen to your family.

SERVPRO technicians arrive quickly and perform temporary repairs to stop any further loss from occurring in your Wilmington home

After a fire in Wilmington, it is not uncommon for doors to either get stuck shut or suddenly be unable to close completely due to warping and swelling of the doorframe. Flames can quickly eat holes in the roof or walls, and windows may break from heat, pressure, or fire fighting efforts. When SERVPRO technicians handle restoration services in local properties affected by fire loss, one of the first actions they take is to secure the property with such tactics as:

  • Boarding up doors
  • Securing windows
  • All entrances get secured
  • Security fencing may get erected if deemed necessary
  • Tarping over damaged roofing or windows to protect the home from the elements during mitigation

Interior Clearing Out Serves Two Purposes

As SERVPRO techs remove charred items from the interior of the home with fire damage in Wilmington, they also inspect each thing removed for the potential for restoration through various cleaning methods. Soot-covered items from a china cabinet destroyed in a fire may also look like a loss. Still, after testing residues and construction materials that make up the items, so the best cleaning application gets chosen, they may have complete restoration possibilities for reuse in the home.

During firefighting efforts, the first responders remove smoldering elements from the structure and contents and place them in the center of the room and douse it with water. More items and materials get added to this pile with copious amounts of water. When the fire gets extinguished, there is often a pile of very wet items and pieces of the home in the center of the room. This is the debris pile that SERVPRO techs go through to find restorable objects.

Frequently Seen Actions to Mitigate Fire Loss

Unfortunately, in the case of fire damage in a Wilmington property, it often needs to look worse to get restored fully. Charred building materials get removed as they contribute nothing but odor. It is not unusual to see a room with significant fire damage taken down to the framework when this occurs; the techs prep the structure for the needed repairs.

Regarding carpet, SERVPRO techs know carpeting is an investment and work hard to restore installed floor coverings. If the fibers do show evidence of damage from the heat, such as melting or deterioration from water, there is often restoration potential. The techs can clean and dry the carpet (also area rugs), and with their deep-reaching steam cleaners, leave the carpet refreshed without a sign of fire loss.

Hardwood flooring gets inspected on a case by case as many factors that are unique to the fire loss situation can affect the outcome of the restoration efforts.

Ceramic tile often fares the best of any of the flooring types customarily found in a home as long as the grout line seal does not receive damage from the heat. If the seal is intact, the subfloor gets protected from water and heat.

If the water used in firefighting efforts seeped into the subfloor as verified by the moisture detection equipment. The techs utilize several different types depending on the surface they are scoping. The devices allow them to peer under floors and other areas with ease to track the precise migration path of the water.

Mold Remediation Needs are Possible

As part of their extensive training in the restoration sciences, the techs are always on the lookout for signs of mold infestation. Naturally-occurring airborne spores can germinate whenever conditions are right and spread quickly throughout the structure. The techs know the early warning signs and take preventative measures to stop mold damage before it starts.

Restoration Goes Easier When You Use One Service for All

A home fire is one of the most stressful events that can affect a property owner. Years of investments in improvements, appliances, and valued collections may get ruined in a flash. Lumping the task of finding, vetting, and hiring a contractor to rebuild the damaged areas can be a headache. SERVPRO technicians have extensive on-going education for the latest in restoration techniques, and they also hold a general contractor license #1992104829, so they can shift from the cleanup to the reconstruction seamlessly. The techs can complete:

  • Needed structural repairs
  • Roofing
  • Painting
  • Carpet installation
  • And any other needed actions make the home ready for habitation

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 brings compassion and professionalism to every fire damage cleanup and restoration. Using a combination of their experience, advanced equipment, and expertise, they can return a home to its pre-fire condition.

fire causing damage “Like it never even happened.”

Heartwarming Holiday Story: Why SERVPRO Is Proud to Support the Hockessin Area Communities

So many different things go into defining the elusive concept of community. Inspiration can be found even in the face of catastrophic damage, as beautifully expressed by a family who battled through personal disaster to make sure a treasured Christmas tradition continued. The strength of our neighbors in the face of extreme adversity is why we feel privileged to be part of fire damage victims’ recovery stories.

A Treasured Tradition Sustained
Despite a severe fire near Hockessin, a West Caln Township couple prioritized their 23-year-strong celebration of the season. During the span of nearly a quarter-century, the stunning light display of holiday cheer became part of many others’ yearly Christmas observance. Over 32,000 lights create a joyful and magical atmosphere, a shining example of why our area boasts a welcoming and close-knit sense of community. Just days before Christmas, a fire tore through the family’s home, threatening to snuff out this year’s exhibition.

Determination and Commitment Denies Disaster
Although the blaze displaced the Chester County couple for up to six months, they refused to give up their yearly labor of love and fellowship. Children worried about Santa and families fearing loss of a tradition were delighted to find the jolly fellow, and Mrs. Claus still waited for their visit, sparkling lights and illuminated characters, making everything festive and bright. The opportunity arose for our team to support this inspirational couple’s commitment, why SERVPRO was honored to help supply the power to turn on the lights.

Generator-Powered Preservation of Tradition: Making New Memories
The coming together of community members under the glow of 26,000 of the 32,000 lights was made possible through modern electrical technology. Our inventory of powerful generators helped the seasonal show go on, but the dedication of the homeowners provided the fundamental sense of hope and perseverance. This example of the strength of individuals thriving despite adversity is why SERVPRO is humbled and honored to help restore this highly-anticipated tradition.

Generator power is just one of the ways we help uplift customers and the community, why SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is privileged to be in the restoration business. Call (302) 992-0104 when disaster strikes. We would love to join in your recovery.

How to Handle Every Damage Remediation Challenge in Wilmington With Ease Using These Tips

If Disaster Strikes Your Wilmington Home You Need To Call SERVPRO

As a restoration team that has been proudly serving Wilmington and the surrounding areas for nearly 30 years, we have learned from every project to become a prominent and respected name in the industry decades from when we first opened our doors. Our business has always had a family-feel, and that stems from multiple generations of the same family running operations. While we are an extension of a significant restoration brand in the country, we have never given up on our relationships and roots that have been the catalyst to our successes.

Water

Much of what makes our water recovery department such a talented group is both the commitment to achieving the highest levels of education and training available for this nice of the restoration industry and the commitment of our team to invest in the cutting-edge equipment, instruments, and technology that can help our Wilmington customers. Even aspects like our initial inspection of a water-damaged property can happen more efficiently and thoroughly with the use of advanced tools like our infrared imagery and hygrometers.

Areas where standing water can get found must get addressed before other mitigation practices can begin in these areas. Our SERVPRO team has multiple choices with extraction tools, this decision depending on the severity of water damage in Wilmington homes and the location of standing water that must get removed. Sump pumps offer continuous discharge and can run on portable power solutions that our team provides should utility services become compromised.

Something unique to our brand is our documentation and methods of monitoring the drying process in a Wilmington home. The same instruments that get used during the initial inspection can also help to determine the success of our drying efforts, but the milestones reached and overall progress get logged to our DryBook software.

Mold

Identifying mold growth in your Wilmington home might not be as easy as many might believe. Without a distinct, clear cause for this organism to seat and thrive, some homes in the area likely contend with colonies and have no idea that they exist. This spreading organism can emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) that can cause detrimental health effects to those in your family that could get exposed. The concentration of these VOCs worsens the closer that a property owner gets to active colonization.

Preventing mold growth might not be possible for specific residents, especially those who do not realize that damp and moist areas of their Wilmington home exist. Our SERVPRO Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) have the training and expertise to perform a thorough inspection of the suspected areas for the presence of moisture. We utilize the same discovery devices for water damage assessments to identify likely areas where mold colonization could exist.

Despite how stressful these situations can be, mold damage in Wilmington homes still often gets pushed off for a more convenient time. As a team with decades of experience in this niche of the industry, we aim to help homeowners overcome these colonies and their damaging effects before demolition and reconstruction is the only feasible remediation solution left.

Fire

Fire loss incidents can be some of the most destructive and varied disasters that our SERVPRO professionals ever face. Fire damage in Wilmington homes and businesses can be a layered threat, requiring stages of restoration and recovery efforts to carefully navigate the situation to prevent it from getting worse. Among the chief concerns when the team first arrives is the assessment process. If it is safe to do so, we can perform this walkthrough with both the customer and the insurance provider to ensure that everyone knows what the property needs to return to preloss condition.

Homes and businesses alike are at the mercy of the most efficient methods of fire suppression and extinguishment. While firefighters can often cause structural damage and water damage on their own, so can sprinkler systems installed in your Wilmington property. As prepared as our team can become to address effects like odors, soot, smoke residue, air quality threats, and other risks, our Water Restoration Technicians (WRT) can mobilize to these affected homes as well to oversee the drying and extraction of water-damaged areas of the house.

It is our job to get your home ready for the next step in recovery, and with fire damage in Wilmington homes, this often means preparing for painting and reconstruction. Our priority is making this process as simple as we can on the customer, regardless of the mitigation and restoration work required. We can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storm

We take it as a point of pride that we have the involvement we do in a large loss recovery team because this means that we can do more to help our Wilmington residents whenever disasters strike. In an area where severe weather can never stay ruled out, we contend with many of the destructive results of these events after the storm passes. Our disaster relief team is on call 24/7 with stocked trailers to address pressing threats like water damage and flooding.

We do not cut corners, and we seek to help anyone and everyone that needs us. That is why after some significant flooding situations and natural disasters, our SERVPRO team could take more than 24 hours to respond to the damage in your Wilmington home. Because of our focus on helping everyone who needs it, we can work as efficiently as possible to ensure that your property gets the attention and mitigation strategies it needs.

Because of our success in the realm of storm relief and flood recovery, we have been able to extend our services beyond our borders to help other states after natural disasters. To date, we have been to Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, and Illinois. This same focus to help out other franchises short-staffed after catastrophes are the same relationships we construct to help out our home when another ugly weather event targets our Wilmington streets.

The choice of professional restorers is a big one, and many select our SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere team for our central location and commitment that We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster. Give us a call today at (302) 992-0104.

Wilmington Home Battered By Hail, Storms, and Flooding

9/20/2019 (Permalink)

Hail in the palm of a person's hand. SERVPRO will not only remove your flood damage, they will remove your fears in you Wilmington home. Don't let that hail get you down.

We know the steps to take for every bit of your Wilmington flood damage clean up.

Protecting a property from additional damage after storms and flooding is vital. While a hurricane has never officially hit Delaware since the keeping of records began in 1851, extreme weather events with hurricane-force winds do occur.

After damage from storms and flooding affect a Wilmington home, the fast action by SERVPRO technicians makes the difference in lessening the loss. During the initial inspection, the technicians note primary areas with damage and prep the property to begin mitigation efforts.

Why SERVPRO?

It is vital for the best outcome from water damage, especially from storms that the home has the water removed in short order using state-of-the-art water extraction equipment. The technicians have access to a huge array of machines, with specialized attachments to pull water out of most types of furnishings and from surfaces.

Property Protection Tactics

Some of the first actions the technicians take include tarping over broken windows and damaged roofing from hail or wind. This stops any additional water from entering the house until after the completion of the restoration services.

Mold Protection

Proactive measures against mold are necessary to inhibit growth. Airborne mold spores are almost always present both inside and outside the home, and exposure to temperatures over 70F-degrees causes spores to germinate. Technicians carefully monitor ambient warmth and humidity to ensure they are below sustainable levels for microbial life.

Protection Against Structural Damage

It may seem counterproductive to cut away sheetrock, but when it wicks water and weakens, often buckling or bowing in place on the wall, SERVPRO technicians use flood cuts to cleanly remove necessary sections of sheetrock in preparation for structural drying. Controlled demolition applied to delaminated tiles, and wet baseboards assist in the complete drying of flooring and within wall cavities or under cabinets.

Protect Against Odors

Water odors smell unpleasant and no one wants them in their home. Technicians have access to numerous applications for ways to cover up or neutralize water odors in the home from gel pellets that work on time release to machines such as hydroxyl generators that safely destroy odor molecules with UV rays.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104 mitigates the loss to local properties from storms and flooding. The certified technicians handle all phases of the restoration services from cleanup to reconstruction under residential contractor license #1992104829 and make the damage to the home "Like it never even happened."

Your Flood Damaged Home In Wilmington Can Be Restored By Our Experts

Sometimes The Best Outcome For Flood Damage In Wilmington Is Reconstruction

When intense storms bring flood damage to a home, a mere inch of groundwater brings devastation to both home and possessions. Water wicks quickly into sheetrock, and it buckles and warps quickly. When this happens, our practice is to remove the damaged building materials, and sometimes after extreme damage, the best outcome is prepping the property for reconstruction.

SERVPRO knows before any rebuilding or repairs from flood damage in a Wilmington home occur, the property must have the water extracted and thoroughly dried. Inspections for mold growth and odor control measures are vital as the rebuild of water loss areas cannot occur over mold or foul odors.

Why SERVPRO? We hold a residential and commercial contractor license, and we offer property owners the ability to utilize the services of a single company for both restoration and rebuilding. This takes the stress out of juggling multiple companies for cleanup and repair after a water loss. In preparation for rebuilding, we perform controlled demolition techniques and prepare the property with actions such as:

    •    Flood cuts to remove damaged sheetrock
    •    Removal of baseboards for cleaning and disinfection if unwarped
    •    Drilling weep holes in sheetrock for drainage as needed
    •    Cutting carpet and padding into strips for removal and disposal

Tracing paths of water migration and setting indoor humidity goals is an integral part of the drying process. Our technicians use measurements from unaffected areas of the residence or under fifty percent. We monitor the drying phase carefully and take measurements with our hygrometers to ensure the interior humidity levels are below optimum conditions for mold growth.

During the mitigation phase, we work closely with both the adjuster and the homeowner. We are careful to stay within the scope of coverage for both cleanup and reconstruction to ensure there are no surprise out-of-pocket expenses. Our experience is extensive having these General Contractor License, Residential Contractor License, and Commercial Contractor License. We always attempt to preserve and restore structural elements and contents rather than replace, keeping a keen eye out for our customers. When items have no restoration potential such as wet carpet and padding, we get approval from either the property owner or adjuster; we discard nothing without permission.

When flood damage happens, contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104. We have the resources and equipment to restore and rebuild your property to make the water loss “Like it never even happened.”

Why SERVPRO for Mold Remediation in Wilmington? Professionals Looking Out for You!

Why Wilmington Residents Trust SERVPRO to Perform Assessment and Remediation of Mold Damage

Residents of Wilmington choose us to assist them with mold remediation and assessment because they know we provide highly trained, certified technicians from the local area. Expenses from microbial growth issues can quickly spiral out of the homeowner's control with many services advocating for laboratory tests or other time-consuming procedures. Our well-earned reputation is based on trust in this community while our access to national-scale resources ensures that we can mobilize advanced remediation equipment to perform an efficient treatment from start to finish.

Mold Damage and Restore vs. Replace

The visible signs of mold damage in your Wilmington home are enough to justify bringing in a claim for the assessment and remediation of mold. Our technicians are certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC,) a nationally recognized body for restoration services. We then expand that training for our technicians in the practical application to private residences and commercial properties. Usually, our focus is on reducing the expense of your claim by restoring rather than replacing possessions and conducting a time-efficient service.

Assessment and circumstances dictate the remediation process

The last thing you want as a homeowner is to spend significant time and effort on property damages. We arrive promptly to assess the extent of the damage. We may need to remove obstacles from the property to gain a more precise assessment. Possessions that show signs of mold infestation can be earmarked for external storage or cleaned onsite depending on what your SERVPRO technician believes to be the most effective solution. Valuable fabrics can be cleaned using Esporta washing machines to remove 99% of soilings before being returned to your home.

Moisture and Humidity are Friends of Mold Infestations

Removing mold colonies is an integral part of our job, but more important is to ensure that the mold does not return after our service is complete. Mold spores proliferate in warm, humid conditions. Our technicians can lower the relative humidity (RH) of the affected area as well as using thermal imaging cameras to find moisture pockets that could be the cause of microbial issues. By taking a dedicated approach to finding the source, SERVPRO reduces the likelihood of mold growth recurring and becoming a lasting problem.

When you notice mold in your home, you need to use a provider you can trust to remediate the issue. Contact SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere at (302) 992-0104.

SERVPRO is here to help you.

SERVPRO of Hockessin represents service at a professional level. SERVPRO knows what is to be expected when you have a disaster. Remember that a disaster is relative of what your definition of a disaster is. We may categorize a disaster on a scale of between one and ten. Number one would be based on a lower type of disaster. The owner may look at the same issue and believe it to be a different number of how we would identify it. Everything is relative but the point is we will handle the situation regardless of how they are perceived. This is what our company and SERVPRO is all about, to service to the customer in a professional and truthful way. SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere is here to help.

SERVPRO of Hockessin / Elsmere has a commercial Esporta Washing Machine on our premises. This machine is located in its own area of our shop. The machine we have comes to us from Canada. This industrial washing machine has four chambers and is bolted to the floor. The Esporta wash system is a powerful, industry changing technological leap forward. The state-of-the-art machine has an iPad attached to it that gets the data entered into it that generates reports. This is extremely helpful when organizing full home cleanings. Esporta has documented 3rd party laboratory validation demonstrating the system consistently delivers 90% of soft contents back to “food grade clean”. Traditional washing technology recovers less than 40%. When we run the machine, we have had customers and neighbors’ comment on the pleasant aroma it puts out.
