  • Prevent soot particles from further damaging your furniture and carpets by keeping movement throughout the home to a minimum

  • Change your HVAC filter but leave systems off until a professional can come check the home

  • Cover HVAC air registers with layers of cheesecloth to prevent soot particles from getting in/out of your HVAC system

  • If your home electricity is off, empty your refrigerator and freezer to prevent mold and odors. Keep your refrigerator doors open after removing food

  • In the case of your heating being off during the winter, pour antifreeze down your sinks, toilet bowls, tubs, and holding tanks to avoid freezing and bursting pipes

  • When walking on damaged carpets and floors, place towels down to prevent tracking of soot and further damage
